Bible of Levi Dawson Family of Washington County, Pennsylvania, transcribed and submitted by Kristy Rowley who adds: I received these copies 25 years ago from a very elderly great aunt who did not know what the connection with the Combs family was.
Mary Combs died February 26th, 1856
William Combs died February 11, 1858
Cuthbert Combs died April 3rd, 1858
Margaret Dawson died December 6th, 1871
Levi Dawson died July 18, 1894
Kristy notes:
- Cuthbert, William, and Mary Combs are all listed in the 1850 U.S. Census, East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. I believe Cuthbert is the Cuthbert Combs of Allegany County, MD. His age is listed as 85, which would put his birth at 1765. Right next to them in the census is my ancestor, Levi Dawson and wife Sarah (Patterson) Dawson.
- I believe the Margaret Dawson in the bible listing is Cuthbert's daughter (or niece?) Margaret Combs who married Thomas Dawson in Allegany County in 1820. Thomas and Margaret Dawson moved to Monongalia County, WV after 1830 and lived with their 12 children, Levi, John Franklin, Mary Jane, Fielding Shepard, William H., Eliza Ann, Ruth Ann, Elias H., Martha Ann, Buckner F., Joseph H., and Alfred Y. Levi was born in 1821, and by 1844 was in Washington County, PA. At the end of her life, presumably after Thomas' death, Margaret Combs Dawson came to East Bethlehem and lived in a little house on Levi's farm that he had built for her.
- By the 1860 census, the Combs family is no longer listed, but Levi, Sarah, and their young children are. However, Levi's property is now worth $8700, and his personal estate is $2389. I am assuming he inherited the Combs farm.
