SE Notes: The original images for all four land records show his middle name was DODSON. He obviously used his middle name in official records and may have also used the middle initial “D”. The name “DODSON” may be an important clue for researchers as to his identity. We find the DODSON name associated with several Combs & associated families. George and Phoebe Combs of Halifax Co, VA, had a daughter Judith who signed her own consent when she married Jesse DODSON in Halifax Co. on 19 Mar 1793 (Halifax Co VA Marriage Records). The Bent Creek Church in present-day Hamblin Co, TN, was established by the Rev. Thomas MURRELL of Big Creek, Hawkins Co, TN, step-father of Martin JOHNSON (h/o Sarah Combs) and Thomas DODSON father of Jesse DODSON who married Judah Combs in Halifax). This Jesse DODSON Combs may be the same as Jesse D Combs in the 1840 Madison Co, AR census, Hilburn Twp. It is the only Jesse Combs in the 1840 Arkansas census. In 1850 he is listed as J D Combs (b. c1809 VA) with wife Jane in White Co, AR where 1854 probate records style him as Jesse D Combs and identify his wife Jane and children. Census records show his children were born in Arkansas.
