Hi, Combs Cousins (and a Heads Up to Fox/Fouch). So far as I know, no one
seems to know what happened to Francis COMBS, s/o Thomas & Susannah PETTIT
Combs of Kingwood, Hunterdon Co, NJ and Hampshire Co, VA (where Thomas d in
1791). I've seen one reference to possibility that Francis d in 1827 in
Hardy Co VA (as versus the 1817 Francis Ignatius Combs, s/o Thomas &
Elizabeth WHARTON Combs of Charles MD), but no one has ever posted any
records in re a Francis d in 1827 so not sure what that means.
I did spot something recently while web editing that I think would be well
worth pursuing:
(1) Thomas COMBS of Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co, NJ, m Susannah PETTIT, d/o
Jonathan, who named Susannah in his will:
15-Aug-1767. Will of Jonathan PETTIT of Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ,
yeoman, named wife Mary, children: John, Susanna COMBS, Jonas, Mary
GREENSWORTH, Hannah FOUKS, and Aaron, Nathaniel, Sarah and Rachel PETTIT.
Executors: wife and son-in-law, Thomas COMBS of same place. Witnessed by
James WARFORD, George WARNE, James RUCKMAN and Jacob IRBUL. Proved
1-Oct-1768. (Combs Researcher Daryl Combs)
(2) According to FOX researchers (their sources still unknown):
I. George FOX, Yeoman, b ca 1702, d testate 1754, Kingwood, Hunterdon Co,
NJ; m 24 Jun 1754, Kingwood Hunterdon Co, NJ by Rev. Malakiah BONHAM, Mary
UNKNOWN. His children are apparently based on his will, dated 27 Apr 1754,
proved 24 Jun 1754 (although I haven't seen transcript or abstract), were:
a. Ambrose FOX - no more information
b. Absalom FOX, b ca 1728, m ca 1750, Christiana BONHAM, daughter of
Amariah BONHAM
c. Anchor FOX (female), b ca 1729, m ca 1749, Hunterdon Co, NJ, Uriah BONHAM
d. William FOX, b ca 1730, d 1754
e. George FOX Jr., b ca 1734, Hunterdon Co, NJ; d Jun 1760, Hunterdon Co,
NJ (will dated Jun __ 1760, probated 25 Jun 1760); m ca 1752, Rachel UNKNOWN
f. Gabriel FOX, b ca 1736; m 1757, Ann WARFORD, d/o John WARFORD and
Elizabeth STOUT of Hunterdon NJ. Gabriel's son, William FOX, b 8 Jun 1759,
Kingwood, Hunterdon Co, NJ; d 1798-9, Hampshire Co, VA (will dated 26 Feb
1798, proved 15 Dec 1799)
g. Amos FOX, b 17 Sep 1739; d 22 Mar 1806, Fairfax Co, VA; m 2 Dec 1761,
Fairfax Co, VA, Anna COMBS, b 1739, d 1812 (d/o Francis and Anna COMBS)
CH: I have asked in the past (unsuccessfully) "how it is known" that Amos
FOX m Anna COMBS (and how it's known that she was d/o Francis and Anna and
how it is known that he was s/o George of Kingwood), but I had been
concentrating on Fairfax Co, VA (where we are "Combs-short") and hadn't
spotted the parallel Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co, NJ > Hampshire Co, VA
migration between the families of Thomas & Susannah PETTIT Combs and those
of the FOX Family. Nor had I considered that Hannah PETTIT Fouks might have
been a.k.a. FOX (or even FOUCH? Just to _really_ confuse us <g>). Nor had I
spotted that Jonathan PETTIT'S will was witnessed by a James WARFORD and
that Gabriel FOX had m a WARFORD.
Back to Francis COMBS, s/o Thomas & Susannah PETTIT Combs: (1) is it
possible that he is the Francis whose daughter, Anna, m Amos FOX of
Kingwood Twp., Hunterdon Co, NJ and Fairfax Co, VA? And (2) (in a flying
leap, purely playing guessing games) is it possible that Francis is the
same who d in Spotsylvania Co, VA in 1809-10? I've been "assuming" that
when Francis of Spots referred to his military lands that he was referring
to VA RW Service, but what if his service was in NJ? Where would the lands
be then? If he left NJ for VA before/during the RW, how would he get lands
for NJ? Could this explain why he was still trying as late as 1809?
In another flying leap: In Fairfax Co, VA in 1786, there was a "John Joseph
COMBS of Gloucester VA" (where he was taxed on personal property in 1787),
and the FOX Researchers have apparently also found evidence that the FOX
Family was also in/out of Gloucester (no details). Then, in Hampshire Co,
VA, we have a later John Joseph COMBS, a printer (b 1813), who seems to
appear out of nowhere, although (unsourced) oral family tradition is that
he came from Fauquier Co VA (See also my posting this date re John Joseph
of Hampshire Co VA)
Someone on this list needs to pin down the Fox Researchers on the origin of
Francis and Anna COMBS as parents of Anna COMBS who m Amos FOX (and Amos
being of Kingwood, Hunterdon), don't you think? And since we know it can't
be me (no time, no time), do you think someone could volunteer to work on
this?
Also needing investigation is whether any John Joseph COMBS is found in
Hunterdon Co, NJ and/or whether any printers are found there (just for the
heck of it, Matt <g>)

PPS I included David EVANS because this _may_ be the David EVANS whose

Combs HAMMOCK (d/o Benedict & Mary (COMBS?) Hammock (see Combs of Wilkes Co
GA); her daughter, Sarah, m William COMBS; and her niece, Rachel CLEMENTS
(d/o Benjamin & Mary BAKER Clements, Jr.) m Mason COMBS who d 1822, Perry
Co, KY. (Supposedly two separate Combs Families)
As to the other Combs, Comers, Cumbos above, they may all be transcribed
correctly and they may not have any relationship to each other, but I was
struck by several things, only two of which will I mention here:
(1) George COMBS -- two of them? Who was the second? Was he s/o George I of
Halifax who was earlier from Amelia VA > Lunenburg VA, as were the Wilkes
Co GA Combs? What happened to him? Is he one of the early George COMBS to
Wilkes Co NC?
(2) BILDY COMER -- Was this name "really" Bildy? Was it "really" COMER? Is
there ANY possibility that Bildy was "really" Biddy? (As in Biddy NANCE &
John COMBS m 1779, Wilkes Co, NC) Or even Bilby, as in Hampshire Co VA
Combs? Or the Betsy of Pittsylvania Co VA? Or "somehow kin" to the John
COMBS, later of Wilkes GA, who may have married in Danville?
And on that note, I'm stopping for the nonce; however, would like to ask
that (1) if any of you COMBER/COOMER researchers can tell us definitely
(one way or the other) which are Combs and which are Coombers, please jump
on in, and (2) any of you Combs researchers with even the most remote
interest in _any_ Southern Combs please take the time to look at the
complete list at Jeff's site (Some other interesting additions to it, too)
