Chapter II, In the New World, Some Early Combs Colonists (pp. 6-13)

Footnote 1. Page 6. No record of a Combs has been found among the Roanoke Colonists as yet. Although we've read accounts (no documentation) referencing Sir Francis DRAKE of Devonshire as having married a COMBS, this is our first indication that it might have been his brother instead. Seeking documentation of same.

Footnote 2. Pages 8-9. No record of a 1621 Abraham COMBS in Colonial Virginia has been located as yet. No Abraham COMBS is found on the 1623/4 Elizabeth City musters, nor elsewhere in Virginia until 1662 in Old Rappahannock Co, VA where is found one Abraham COMBS who was later of St. Mary's Co, MD, and a probable relative of Archdale COMBS I of Old Rappa.

Footnote 3. Page 9. References to "Jamestown John" are to the John COOMBES of the Ship Marigold in 1619/1620, whom Dr. Combs believed (mistakenly) to have been the son of John & Margaret ARCHDALE Combs who m 11 Dec 1587, St. Antholin Budge Row, London, and the father of Archdale COMBS I of Old Rappa Co, VA. It is now known that their son, John, baptised 16 Aug 1602, St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, London, attended Oxford University from 1619-1622, thus could not have been "Jamestown John" of the Ship Marigolde. It is also now known, however, that John COMBS, h/o Margaret ARCHDALE, owned shares in the Virginia Company as early as 1608 (See Earliest Combs to Virginia for most references to same in this Chapter). Moreover, not only was John, s/o John and Margaret ARCHDALE Combs, not "Jamestown John," neither did he marry a Margaret (or Peggy). Instead, he married 8 Jul 1630, Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England, Elizabeth LOVETT, d/o Robert & Anne SAUNDERS Lovett. John and Elizabeth's son, Archdale, b ca 1641, Soulbury, Bucks, may have been the same as Archdale COMBS I of Old Rappa Co, VA (research in progress). No evidence has been found as yet that John COMBS of Isle of Wight Co, VA in the1670s and 1680s was kin to either Archdale COMBS I of Old Rappa or John COMBS of Jamestown (research in progress).

Footnote 4. Page 10. No evidence has been found of more than a single John & Margaret ARCHDALE Combs marriage - that of 1587 in St. Antholin Budge Row, London. Nor has evidence been located that John COMBS of Jamestown (1619-1620) married a Margaret or Peggy, whether ARCHDALE or otherwise. No Margaret ARCHDALE as a niece of Archdale COMBS (1606-) has been found as yet, although he did have a niece Margaret COMBS, s/o his brother, John COMBS and his wife, Elizabeth LOVETT. See Also Footnote 3 above.

Footnote 5. Page 11. As noted in Footnote 3 above, John COMBS, s/o John & Margaret ARCHDALE Combs, was not John of Jamestown in 1619/20. We continue to seek records for Richard COMBE of Combe Manor, Devonshire (d 1619), and his sons. John COMBS, h/o Margaret ARCHDALE, definitely had Devonshire connections, but insufficient records have been collected at this time to connect him with the above Richard.

Footnote 6. Page 12. No will has been found as yet for Archdale COMBS (b 1606, s/o John & Margaret ARCHDALE Combs) who was deceased by 1652, not 1654; however, an Oxfordshire estate record in 1652 mentions his niece, Margaret COMBE, d/o John & Elizabeth LOVETT Combs.
