He represented the town in the Legislature, and was the first master of Island Lodge of Free Masons. He was postmaster, town clerk, and died on board his vessel, the brig Caroline Eddy, in the Mediterranean Sea, 19 Dec 1877, and was buried in Islesborough with Masonic rites.

He died 3 Apr 1892, from apoplexy at the age of 61 years (?). He had been a local sea captain for nearly forty years. He commanded a vessel at the time he was twenty, and through his long seafaring career had charge of many vessels, in nearly all of which he went on foreign voyages.
