He began life as a mariner at the age of seventeen, as “boy before the mast” in the ship “Sam Skolfield,” built at Brunswick, ME. – rising through successive positions of second and first officer so that he was in command of the ships “General Fairchild,” “George R. Scholfield,” “D. A. Brayton,” and brigs “Taria Topan,” and “Mary Gibbs.” While in command of this vessel, which sailed from Norfolk for South America, laden with coal, he was lost with all on board. The vessel was never heard from.501

Mr. Galloway is a born naturalist, a quick and accurate observer of the habits of plants and animals, and he very naturally fell into the greenhouse and nursery business.
