Shipley, a parish in the hundred of West Grinstead, rape of Bramber, County of Sussex, less than 6 miles northeast of Washington, 6-1/2 northwest of Steyning, 7-1/4 northwest of Bramber and 7-1/2 northwest of Upper Beeding and almost 9 miles northwest of Coombes... "containing 1159 inhabitants. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Chichester, endowed with 200 private benefaction, 200 royal bounty, and 600 parliamentary grant, and in the patronage of the Rector of Coombs. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is principally in the Norman style." (Lewis...)
