Old Town District

[The 1870 Census for Old Town District was taken in the month of August 1870 by John Walsh, Post Office for the entire District was listed as Nuckollsville. Population for Old Town District was 2220]

145. Combs, Jas. T. 34 Farm Laborer 120 MD
Amanda 38
James 11
Jackson 10
Lydia 10
John 8
Anderson 6
Rosy 2

DAVIS, John 69 Shingle Maker NC
Lydia 84 No Occupation NC

[James Cooms, Md. Malinda Hall, d/o C. J. & J. Hall, 12/7/1879; A. (Anderson) J. Cooms Md. Malinda Hall, d/o C. J. & Jane Hall, 3/18/1882. John Davis may be the same as was living in household 1457 in the 1860 Grayson Co., VA Census.]

Notes: James T. COOMES m 22 Oct 1857, Ashe Co, NC, Amanda DAVIS; however, his age is off by 20 years, they were in Surry Co, NC in 1860. It would appear the elderly couple John and Lydia DAVIS were relatives of Amanda. His 1880 census record indicates he was age 64 with parents both born in England.
* Patience Northern states the Census is as COMES

195. Combs, R. F. 22 Farm Laborer 120 130
Martha 22
Luzena 2
Texana 1

Notes: Rush Floyd Combs, s/o Nancy Combs who follows (See next).

197. Combs, Nancy 35 Keeping House
Richd. 16
Isaac W. 14
Malinda 10
Sarah 7

[She was probably a Civil War Widow.]

218. Combs, Nancy 39 Keeping House 100
Stephen 18
Isaac 14
Sarah C. 14
Sarah M. 9

[Nancy was probably a Civil War widow.]

LC Notes: These appear to be the same family. Actually, Nancy's age in the 2nd household was closer, but Isaac's Initial in the first and Malinda, rather than Sarah C. makes me believe it's the same family as the 1850 Carroll Co, VA Household of Nancy Combs, d/o Joseph and Caroline WILLS Combs. See Zadock Combs Descendants for more; however, also note that one Richard Stephen Combs stated he was b in 1853 in Carroll Co, VA and that his parents were both born in Virginia, but came to Crittenden Co, AR in 1876. If so, he was apparently not the s/o Nancy since she was in the 1880 household of daughter, Sarah Malinda, who had by then married John W. POOL.
