mentioned again several times in the Middle Temple records between 1563 and 1567, and was a contemporary of Mr. (afterwards Sir) William Periam. On February 6th 1566-7, it is stated that " Mr. Pyriam [Periam] and Mr. Archdale were chosen Stewards for providing for the Reader’s feast in next vacation."¹ Richard Archdale married, about 1560, Mary Ferne, of Cuddesdon. near Oxford. Administration for Mrs. Dorothy Berne of Cuddesdon, deceased, was granted to her daughter, Mary Archdale, on May 14th 1561 ; and Administration for Ralph Ferne, junior, was granted to his sister, Mary Archdale, on November 13th 1570. Richard Archdale died before 1597. By his wife, who was living in 1609, he had issue :—

(1) John Archdale, of Whately (or Wheatley), Oxfordshire. His name appears in a list of Recusants in that county, remaining at liberty in 1592.² He had the honour to bear the pennon at his uncle Martin Archdale’s funeral, January 3rd 1597-8. He died without issue after 1599.

(2) Abraham Archdale, of Whately. He matriculated at Gloucester Hall, Oxford, February 12th 1589-90, aged 25, and died without issue in 1631. His will is dated August 2nd, proved October 14th 1631 (Appendix C).

(3) Cyprian Archdale, died without issue.

(4) Virgil Archdale, died without issue.

(1) Mary Archdale, married Robert Moulton, of Hunyborne, Worcester- shire, and had a daughter Anne. who married Richard Powell, of Forest Hill, Oxfordshire. Their daughter. Mary Powell, married in 1643 the poet John Milton, who in 1650-1 compounded for a portion of the old Archdale property at Whately, which had descended to the Powells.³

(2) Margaret Archdale, married . . . . Bennett, of Oxford.

(3) Dorothy Archdale, married John Stampe, of Houlton, Oxford- shire, and had issue.

(4) Frances Archdale, married Richard Lowe, of London. merchant, and had issue.

(5) Bridget Archdale, married . . . . Blackburne, and had issue.

(6) Barbara Archdale, married Joseph Barnes, and had issue.

2. Martin Archdale, ancestor of the Irish family of that name, and of whom presently.

3. Barnard Archdale, of Oxford, ancestor of the High Wycombe branch (see Chap. VI.).

4. Thomas Archdale, the fourth son of John Archdale of Stafford, was a merchant in Aldermanbury, London. Certain property at Tottenham was conveyed to him on September 23rd 1589, by William Androwes Esq. of Tottenham. Thomas Archdale married firstly, at St. Antholin’s, London, on October 31st 1568. Mary, daughter of Richard Clifton of London, Skinner to King Henry VIII (by Margaret Morton, of Shropshire). She was buried at St. Antholin’s, November 26th 1598. He married there secondly, on December 29th 1583, Blith Wilfred. Thomas Archdale’s will is dated March 5th 1609, and proved December 3rd 1611 (see Appendix C). He was buried on November 27th 1611, in St. Antholin’s ; at which church the four children of his first marriage were baptised, namely :—

(1) John Archdale, baptised December 2nd 1571, and buried October 30th 1578.

(1) Margaret Archdale, baptised November 6th 1569 ; married. December 11th 1587, John Combe (or Combes), of London, merchant, and had issue,

(2) Sarah Archdale, baptised August 3rd 1574, She married firstly . . . . Smith, of London ; and secondly Ady Sare (or Sayers), of Provendery in Kent, and of the Inner Temple. She had issue by both marriages.

(3) Barbara Archdale, baptised April 1st 1578 ; married William Palmer, of London, merchant. Her will is dated September 13th 1650, and
