Martin Archdale married at St. Olave's, Hart Street, on June 13th 1575, Barbara, daughter and heiress of Thomas Sexton. of Lavenham. Suffolk, and London. By her, he had seven children ;—

1. John Archdale, born in 1578, of whom presently.

2. Martin Archdale, born in 1587; went to Ireland with his brother John, and was party to a Deed at June 10th 1617. He afterwards returned to England, where he was living in 1631.

3. Robert Archdale (Rev.). born in 1589; graduated B.A. at Christ's College. Cambridge, in 1607, and M.A. in 1611. He was Rector of Trimley St. Martin. Suffolk, in 1627, and died unmarried in 1644-5. Administration was granted to Thomas Aylolffe, his half- brother. on February 20th 1644-5 (Probate Registry, London).

4. Samuel Archdale, of Hornchurch, Essex, born in 1591; was admitted to Lincoln's Inn, May, 30th 1609. He was buried at St. Helen's, Bishopsgate, June 10th 1617. His will is dated June 6th, and proved November 27th 1617 (See Appendix C).

5. Daniel Archdale, of Winnington, Essex, born in 1593. He was a Pensioner at Christ's College. Cambridge, in 1610 ; Was admitted to Lincoln's Inn, August 6th 1612 ; and died in 1647. Administration was granted, May 25th 1647, to his surviving daughter. Mary Archdale (Probate Registry, London).

1. Alice Archdale, born in 1581 ; married Sir Benjamin Ayloffe, 2nd Bart., of Braxted, Essex. She was buried at Hornchurch, November 28th. 1612, leaving an only child, Barbara Ayloffe.

2. Sarah Archdale, born in 1595 ; married at St. Helen's, Bishopsgate, December 17th 1618, Richard Baker, of the parish of St. Saviour's, Southwark.

Martin Archdale's will is dated October 29th 1597, with a codicil of December 12th, and proved on December 31st of the same year. He gave directions for his burial in the church of St. Margaret Pattens, London, and appointed guardians for his children as follows : “ My good friend Mr. Roger Mountagu shall have the order, rule and disposing of my son John ; my brother Thomas Archdale shall have the order, rule and government of my sons. Martin and Robert ; my brother Matthew Archdale shall have the order, rule and government of my sons, Samuel and Daniel ; my wife Barbara shall have the ordering, rule and government of my two daughters.”

To his eldest son John, the testator devised his Manor and house of Abbotts, at Darsham, together with the farm called Molletts ; an estate “ which, according to the ancient and laudable customs of this Realm of England ought to descend unto the said John Archdale,” the said Manor being held of the Queen in chief by knight's service. He left the rest of his lands and tenements in Suffolk, including the Manors of Austins and Gerrards, to his son Martin ; his property in Kent to his son Robert ; an interest in his Middlesex estate to his son Samuel ; his property in Suffolk Lane, and in Lincoln shire, to his son Daniel.

He bequeathed two separate legacies of 1000 marks and £100 to each of his sons, to be paid at the age of twenty-one ; to his wife Barbara the sum of £1000, and “ one chaine of gold, two paires Of bracelets of gold, six ringes of gold, and all her apparell whatsoever;” to his daughter Alice £900, and to his daughter Sarah £600, both to be paid at the age of twenty-one or at date of marriage. If either of his daughters should marry before the age of twenty-one without the consent of her mother or of the executors, her portion was to be divided amongst her brothers.

Amongst the smaller bequests. the testator left £40 to his sister Elizabeth ; £40 to his brother Thomas ; £20 to his brother Matthew; £lO to John Dorrington ; whose brothers George, Francis and Richard are also named in the will ; a gold ring of the value of £3, to each of the three legatees, Thomas and Matthew Archdale, and John Dorrington ; to his son John Archdale. “ my Seale ringe of golde, having my marke thereon ;” the sum of 100 marks to Roger Mountagu ; £10 each to his (the testators) nephews, John and Abraham Archdale, sons of Mary Archdale, widow ; £20 to his sister-in-law, Anna Archdale of Oxford, widow ; £5 to every one of the children of his niece Browne, daughter of the said Anna ; £lO to the unmarried daughter Of Anna Archdale ; £10 to his nephew Richard Ripton ; £20 to his servant Michael Pynder ; mourning apparel to each servant who should be in his employment at the time of his decease ; legacies to hospitals, prisoners in the Fleet, “ poor, godlie and learned preachers.”
