Extract from the Post-Chaise Companion, 1803 :— “ Three miles from Portarlington on the left is Emo-park, the Earl of Portarlington’s magnificent seat ; and behind it is the hunting-lodge of Col. Archdall.”

NOTE:  Emo Park, Formerly Dawson’s Court, is situated in the parish of Coobanagher. The hunting-lodge, mentioned above, was called The Grove, and was rented by the Archdalls for many years. On Taylor and Skinner’s road-map (1778), it is called Ireland’s Grove, being then in the occupation of . . . . Montgomery, Esq. Near Portarlington is Spire Hill, so called from the erection of an obelisk on it by Viscount Carlow, for the purpose of giving employment to the poor in a season of scarcity (see Lewis’s Topog. Dict).
