Memoirs of the Archdales With the Descents of Some Allied Families
BARNARD ARCHDALE, the third son of John Archdale of Stafford, became a merchant of Oxford. He took the citizens’ oath to the University on April 22nd 1569, April 7th 1570, Octoher 26th 1570, and April 7th 1573 ; refused to take the oath, December 11th 1576, and was excommunicated by the Vice-Chancellor ; again refused tbe oath, May 17th 1577. He died intestate, and Administration was granted to his widow on February 19th 1577-8.
Barnard Archdale married Anne Ferne, of Cuddesdon (sister of Mary Ferne, already meltioned), and by her, who was living in 1597, he left issue :—
1. Richard Archdale, of whom presently.
1. Katherine Archdale. married, before 1597, Edward Browne, merchant, of London, and had issue.
2. Alice Archdale, married Arthur Alvey. and had issue.
3. Audrey Archdale, married James Povey, of Lichfield.
RICHARD ARCHDALE, the only son, was a merchant vintner in Dowgate Street, London, having connection with Bordeaux and Lisbon. He is mentioned in the will (April 17th 1603) of his kinsman Francis Barker, wbo was also a London vintner. On June 22nd 1604, be purchased the Manor of Loakes, or Lokes, at High Wycombe, Bucks, from John Raunce ; and on August 28th 1628 the same John Raunce conveyed to Richard Archdale the Manors of Temple Wycombe, and Windsor or Chapel Fee.¹ In 1631, Richard inherited certain “ household stuff ” at Whately, Oxfordshire, from Abraham Archdale, his cousin-german. In 1636, a petition was addressed to Archbishop Laud by tbe Mayor and townsmen of Chipping Wycombe, concerning the endowment of their parish church. The petition bears twenty signatures, the 17th and 18th being “ Ric. Archedale ” and “ Edm. Waller,” the poet. ²
Richard Archdale was buried at High Wycombe in 1638. His will is dated May 31st, and proved October 8th 1638 (see Appendix C). He married Judith, daughter of Richard Thorpe, of London, by Elizabeth Brooke. By her, who survived him and was buried at High Wycombe, he left issue :—
1. Thomas Archdale, of whom presently.
2. Richard Archdale, born about 1612 ; matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford, January 28th 1630 ; graduated B.A., April 29th 1634 ; and B.C.L., May 3rd 1636 ; living in 1638.
3, Matthew Archdale, merchant, was one of the ‘ ablest men ’ in Dowgate Ward, London, in 1640, He was buried at High Wycombe, January 12th 1685.
4. Robert Archdale, matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford, March 2nd 1637-8, and graduated B.A., July 3rd 1685.
