Chapter IV, Archdale Combe, of Old Rappahannock (pp. 20-26)

Footnote 1. Page 20. Although the Combs owned land in that part of Old Rappanhannock which became Essex , then Caroline (the land on Peumans End Run inherited in 1717 by Mason COMBS, Sr. from his father, John, s/o Archdale and Elizabeth), it appears that both Archdale and his sons, John and William, resided on the north side of the Rappa River in what became first Richmond, then King George. Only John's son, Archdale II, has been found in the records of Essex as a resident of that county.

As noted in the Footnotes of Chapter III, Archdale COMBE of Old Rappa is now believed to have been significantly younger, and quite probably the Archdale COMBE b in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England in 1641. If so, then he was not the son of the John COMBE who d in in Middlesex Co, VA in 1675, but the s/o John COMBE who d in Berkshire, England in 1652 (s/o John & Margaret ARCHDALE Combe).

As also noted in the Footnotes of Chapter III, no Abraham COMBS has been located in Elizabeth City as yet. The Abraham COMBS found in the records of Lancaster was undoubtedly the same who appears to have resided in Old Rappa County abt the same time as Archdale COMBE, and who associated with the same families as Archdale and presumably was "somehow kin" to him. He later removed to St. Mary's Co, MD where he is found associated with the Archdale-Alvey family and where he died in 1684.

Footnote 2. Page 21. See The Underwood Families re past confusion among researchers in regard to (1) Col. William UNDERWOOD (d 1662/3, and also referred to as Capt. and Major) and (2) his son, William UNDERWOOD, Sr. (1648-1717), by his earlier wife, Mary (BURTON or MOSELEY), and (3) William UNDERWOOD, Jr., s/o Elizabeth by her earlier husband Unknown UNDERWOOD (possibly also a William). See Butler-Combs Connections in regard to confusion between Elizabeth UNKNOWN Underwood Underwood Combs and both her step-daughter-in-law, Mary BUTLER (w/o William UNDERWOOD, Sr. and sister of Amory BUTLER) and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth BUTLER, w/o Amory BUTLER (among others).

As noted, Col. William UNDERWOOD d in 1662/3, and Archdale COMBE m his widow, Elizabeth, shortly thereafter, a fact important to calculations regarding the birth of their eldest son, John.

Archdale COMBE of Old Rappa was definitely not the Archdale COMBE who was b in 1606 in St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, London, as that Archdale COMBE (s/o John and Margaret ARCHDALE Combe) d in Oxfordshire in 1652.

As noted in the footnotes for earlier chapters, no evidence of a relationship between "Jamestown John" and Archdale Combe of Old Rappa has been found. Nor have any Combs been located among the 1650s immigrants (Underwoods, Meadors, etc.) from Isle of Wight Co, VA to Old Rappa County

Footnote 3. Page 22-3. The 1674 Old Rappa Co, VA conveyance by Archdale COMBE and his wife, Elizabeth, was to William UNDERWOOD, Sr., not to William UNDERWOOD, Jr., and part of the settlement of Elizabeth's dower rights as the widow of Col. William UNDERWOOD (William Sr. was her step-son, William, Jr. her son). Ditto for the 1675 Old Rappa Co, VA conveyance by Archdale and Elizabeth to William BALL, Jr. who had m Margaret WILLIAMSON, d/o James and Ann UNDERWOOD Williamson, the latter the sister of Col. William UNDERWOOD.

The 1693 Essex (not Richmond) conveyances in regard to the Peumans End land did not include Elizabeth, w/o Archdale, although she was mentioned in those records. The Peumans End land conveyances were also part of her dower right settlement and the lands were conveyed by William UNDERWOOD, Sr. (her step-son) to her three sons, William UNDERWOOD, Jr. (by her first UNDERWOOD husband) and John and William COMBS, her eldest two sons by Archdale (she may have had more children by Archdale than just the two).

The William UNDERWOOD who sold land in 1696 to Nathaniel POPE was William UNDERWOOD, Sr., not Jr.

Archdale COMBE was probably deceased by 1684 when his son, William, was apprenticed to his step-uncle, William UNDERWOOD, Sr. (Old Rappa Records)

Footnote 4. Page 24. Richard TUTT was not the brother-in-law of John COMBS, but the h/o John's step-niece, Mary UNDERWOOD, d/o John's step-brother, William UNDERWOOD, Sr., and his wife, Mary BUTLER (sister of Amory).
