Chapter XI, Jeremiah ("Long Jerry") Combs (pp. 77-78)

Page 77. 1. See the Combs &c. Research Report for Jeremiah "Long Jerry" COMBS who is (erroneously?) listed here by the author as a s/o RW John COMBS "one of the eight;" and the John COMBS (III) whom the author states d ca 1840, Perry Co, KY; however, see also Chapter X, The Eight Brothers Settle Down and its accompanying footnotes re confusion over two John COMBS of Perry Co, KY (If Long Jerry was the s/o John COMBS, d 1840, Perry, then he was not the s/o RW John COMBS, d 1848, Washington Co, KY). On page 77, Long Jerry is listed as b 1782-1783, on page 50, 1781-1782. No record of Jerry's having m a Nancy has been located as yet, the only source at present for her having been neè COMBS and a sister of Millie COMBS (which Millie COMBS?) is the statement of Adeline BRASHEARS Cornett, b 1832 (age 11 when Jeremiah died). The source for her possibly having been neè SMITH is not yet known. It also appears that some researchers have believed she was neè SUMNER, based on the sentence, "Whatever her maiden name, her first name was Nancy. But it was not Nancy SUMMER; she married "Chunky Jerry." Since "Chunky Jerry" did not marry a Nancy SUMNER, but a Syntha SUMNER (Dickey Diary Interviews), this puts SUMNER "back in the running" as a potential surname for the first wife of Jeremiah "Long Jerry."
Page 78. 2.

Jeremiah L. had both a son, Nicholas, and a son-in-law, Nicholas. The latter was Nicholas S. COMBS, Jr., s/o Jeremiah C. "Chunky" and Synthia SUMNER Combs, and married Jeremiah L.'s daughter, Margaret "Peggy" COMBS. No evidence has been found of a second son-in-law named Nicholas, nor of a second marriage by Jeremiah L.'s daughter, Polly COMBS, who m Elijah COMBS, Jr., s/o Elijah "8" and Sarah ROARK Combs, Sr. (See also "Two Hiram & Mary Combs of Perry Co, KY and Madison Co, AR," which documents that Polly COMBS Combs removed to Madison Co, AR, where she appears in the 1860 Census, apparently still a widow).

The author notes that Margaret "Peggy" is not usually included (in oral family histories?) as a child of Jeremiah "Long Jerry" by his first wife, but also seems not to be certain as to which Margaret "Peggy" COMBS married which Nicholas COMBS, d/o Jeremiah "Long Jerry." In the General Table, p. 124, Margaret's husband is identified as Nicholas, s/o "Chunky," by which is apparently meant, Jeremiah C. "Chunky Jerry" COMBS, and his wife, Syntha SUMNER. The family of this Nicholas and Margaret "Peggy" COMBS Combs are listed correctly in the General Table, p. 153, immediately between Jeremiah's daughter, Willie COMBS Smith, and son, Wesley and Nancy COMBS Combs, with the assigned children being those from the 1850 Perry Co, KY Census District 2 HH144-156, of Nicholas COMBS, b ca 1822, with wife, Margaret "Peggy" COMBS, b ca 1824, KY. On page 140 of the General Table, under the family of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" and Elizabeth COMBS Combs, is listed, again correctly, "Nicholas, m. Margaret, dau. of "Long Jerry;" however, on p. 124, under RW John COMBS & wife, Margaret, is also listed, incorrectly, "Margaret, m. Nicholas, son of "Chunky" Jerry Combs." Moreover, on p. 141, Nicholas, s/o Jeremiah C. "Chunky," is listed with a Margaret, and children Hyskiah (Hezekiah?) and Polly, apparently based on the pension file of RW John COMBS of Perry Co, KY whose daughter, Margaret, had a child, Hezekiah/Hyskiah, b ca 1824. On p. xiii of this manuscript, the author refers to Margaret, d/o "Long Jerry," as having had a son by John LACEY ca 1857.

Jeremiah L. COMBS, Jr., h/o Sarah KELLY, is not included as a child of "Long Jerry" in the General Table on pages 124-15, but is noted several times as his son elsewhere in the manuscript; i.e., on page 79, the author names Jeremiah L. as having been, like William Lorenzo, named after Methodist Preacher Lorenzo DOW; on page 89, refers to "Jeremiah Lorenzo, son of "Long Jerry;" and on p. 148, to the marriage of Susan COMBS (d/o Clinton "Grizzler" and Elizabeth COMBS Combs) to Madison, "son of Jeremiah L., son of "Long Jerry." Moreover, despite the omission in the General Table in his father's family listing, Jeremiah L. Jr.'s family appears on page 152 of the General Table, immediately between the families of (his brothers) John L. and William L.
