Kingston Bagpuize (aka Bagpuze), a parish in the hundred of Ock, county of Berks, 6-1/4 miles west of Abingdon... The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Berks, and diocese of Salisbury... and in the patronage of the President and Fellows of St. John's College, Oxford. The church is dedicated to St. James. At New-Bridge, in this parish, are held two annual fairs... A sharp skirmish took place here between the army of the parliament and the royalists, when the former were defeated and driven back, on May 27th, 1644. A charity school has been founded here, but it has no permanent endowment, being supported by annual donations..." Notes: The 1619 Oxfordshire will of William COMBS, brother of John COMBS I of Sparsholt, Berkshire, names "Aunt Chrian LANGWORTH of Devonshire." Whether she was the sister of John Combs II, h/o Margaret ARCHDALE, remains unknown (research in progress), but it is possible that "Chrian" was an abbreviation for the given name of Christian or Christine; thus the records of the above parish may be significant.
