Researcher Leslie Maher notes that the earliest extant parish register for Wickwar begins in 1689, and that although some Bishop's transcripts are extant, they are fragmentary.
In the records of Wickwar are found both the surname CAM or CAME and the surname COME, with Francis CAM terming John COMES his brother-in-law in 1619. Whether an intermarriage of two families or a variant spelling of one is not yet known, but note that the surname Stinchomb is also found in the records of this parish as Stinchcam.

Was the surname CAM-CAME-CAMBE a.k.a. COM-COME-COMBE, etc., or were these two separate surnames? Or was the John COMES of 1619 possibly John TOMES? According to the PRO Index, there is a 1721 suit (location not given) between CAME and COMES (C 11/2168/16), about which no further details are known at this time.
Also found in the records of this parish are the surnames: PULLEIN-PULLEN, CREW and UNDERWOOD as well as John SMITH of Nibley.
