Two undocumented submissions to the IGI shows that Hugh FITCHE married an Anne SMITH, one on 13 Sep 1585 and the other on 13 Sep 1586 (no parish listed). The marriage record does not appear in either the extracts of St. Albans or St. Peters. The above Thomas COOMMES (COMBS) has not yet been identified; however, note the 1620 will of Phillip COMBS of Berkshire who mentions both his brother, Thomas, and his wife's kinswoman, Joane SMITH.

Married: William COOMES and Alice HOWLETT (undocumented; incorrect?)Several IGI entries that are individual submissions state that a William COOMES married 21 Jan 1558 or 1559 (old style, new style?) at Abbey, St. Albans, Herts, an Alice HOWLETT, but the marriage isn't included in the IGI's actual parish extracts, nor any other record located of this marriage as yet. Neither has a christening record for an Alice HOWLETT been located.

It is possible that the surname is actually SWINSTEDE (SWINSTEAD, SWINSTEED, SWINSTED, etc.). Although no Cecilie SWINSTEAD is found in the IGI, this same source includes an Ellyn SWINSTED christened in Ware, Herts on 6 Jul 1566 (no parents' names given). A Robert SWINSTEED, son of Thomas, was christened on 3 May 1562 at Cheshunt, Herts, and a John SWINSTEED, son of Richard, was christened at Cheshunt on 6 Oct 1583.

From Virginia Lineages, Letters & Memories by Alice Jean Nelson, 1984, pg 126, 127, & 128
Richard CARTER of Garston, Hertsford, England, of which estate he received a grant from the Crown, 24 July 1544, "to Richard CARTER and Thomas PALMER and the heirs of the said Richard." He sold one moiety of the said estate to John RANDALL and Agnes, his wife. Known issue included: Known issue of Richard CARTER included William CARTER of Garston, Hertsford, d 1566 m Bridgett PODMORE. Known issue included William CARTER (b 1563 m (1) Mary WILSON, (2) Katherine JEFFES); and Robert CARTER of Garston b 1560, d 27 Apr 1636 m Petronella CURETE, dau of William CURETE.
Robert CARTER bought back the moiety of the estate from Michael SAGER of Marsworth, Bucks and his wife, Margaret which they in turn had acquired from John RANDALL. Known issue of Robert CARTER, wife Petronella CURETE included their youngest son, Col. John CARTER b 1613 Garston, Hertsford, England, who immigrated to Virginia ca 1635, and d 10 June 1669 at Corotoman, Lancaster Co., VA, where he was buried at Christ Church. A patent for thirteen hundred acres was taken out in Jamestown by John CARTER in 1642, but in 1654 he moved to Lancaster Co VA where he was elected to the House of Burgess that year, which was also the same year, he was made commander-in chief of a small force which was raised to cope with the Rappahannock Indians In Oct 1655, he was granted 4,000 acres for transporting eighty persons as indentured servants from England to the colony, and with his son, John, he sued out patents for over 18,500 acres of land. He married five times: (1) Jane GLYN, dau of Morgan GLYN of Fulham, Middlesex, England (See Glinn-Combs marriage above). She d bef 1655; (2) Eleanor ELTONHEAD Brocas, widow Capt. Wm. BROCAS; (3) Anne CARTER, dau of Cleve CARTER of Ratcliffe Highway, St. Dunstans, Stepney, [Middlessex] England, who was born ca 1635, d 1662; (4) Sarah LUDLOW, d 1668, dau of Gabriel LUDLOW and (5) Elizabeth SHERLEY [SHIRLEY] of Gloucester Co, VA He had a total of six children. In his will, Col. John CARTER manumitted two of his negro slaves who were married to each other, leaving them a cow, a calf, three barrels of Indian corn, some land for cultivation, a house and other items necessary for their comfort and well being. (Bruce, Economic History of VA, II, p 124.)
