11 July 1907 Biography- L. D. LEWIS, Leslie County's choice for Circuit Judge of the 33rd Judicial District is a native of Leslie County. He is the son of Abijah LEWIS who went west in 1884. His mother was a Perry County Combs, a Combs both paternally and maternally. Mr. LEWIS attended publicschool at Hyden and afterward attended Cumberland College, Laurel Seminary, taught school and studied law. He has a fair education and is a lawyer of considerable ability....
In 1898 he married Rebecca the daughter of F. M. MORGAN and they have two pleasing children. He voted Democratic until about ten years ago at which time he left that party and has ever since been an active worker in the Republican party.... when the Democratic party robbed the people of their sufferage and unseated Gov. SE NOTE: Martha Sizemore married William Combs and is living in his HH in 1920 Hazard Perry Co., KY Census. Since Bessie is listed as a step-daughter, Martha was probably previously married. "FIRST VERDICT Of Death in Leslie County Is Imposed On Jack DAVIS, Convicted Of Murder."
Hyden, Ky., August 27--(AP)--A jury in Leslie County Circuit Court today convicted Jack DAVIS of the murder of Abram COMBS of Hazard and gave him the county's first death verdict.
DAVIS, one of seven prisoners who escaped the Clark County Jail recently and was captured at Nashville, Tenn., went on trial Wednesday. The jurors received thecase at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
On the stand DAVIS had maintained he was present when COMBS, thirty-year old-son of a prominent Hazard family, was slain and the COMBS automobile taken, but named as the slayer Ben KING, who was indicted with DAVIS and Walter RILEY.
KING and RILEY were on trial today.
COMBS, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Curt COMBS, was killed on Highway 80 near McIntosh Creek the night of July 8. The body was found in the woods about 10 feet from the highway the next day.
A large bolt was used to kill COMBS, DAVIS related. State highway patrolmen took DAVIS to London after the jury's verdict was returned. The officers had been on duty during the trial.
