Washington County was formed as an original county in 1788, part of the Northwest Territory's Illinois County, Virginia (1778-1784). In 1797, Adams was est. from Hamilton and Washington; and Jefferson from Washington. In 1798, Ross was est. from Adams, Hamilton and Washington. In 1800, Fairfield was est. from Ross and Washington; and in 1801, Belmont from Jefferson and Washington. In 1805, Athens was est. from Washington; and in 1813, Monroe was est. from Belmont, Guernsey and Washington. In 1817-1819, Morgan Co was est. from Washington, Guernsey and Muskingum; and in 1818, Perry was est. from Fairfield, Washington and Muskingum. In 1851, Noble was est. from Guernsey, Monroe, Morgan and Washington.

COMBS (youngest s/o James and Mary FINLEY Combs, natives of Philadelphia, PA; m Wood Co, WV, 1865, Caroline SMITH, removed ca 1867 to Clarke Co, IA. (James Combs Family Archives) See also 1850 Washington Census which shows James was b ca 1794 in NJ (probably Monmouth Co), not PA. James has not yet been located on the 1830 census.
