SE Note: Cannot read the original census record. Martha's last name does not look like Combs, but she does appear to be a widow. The census records show that the mother of Martha's grandson Homer was born in Ohio and the mother of Martha's grandson Frank was born in Missouri. If these are correct, then Martha is from a family that moved around and then returned to Ky.

Note: Lloyd Combs states he was born in WVA. He is previously found in 1900 in Wayne Co., WVA. living in the household of Sherman PERKINS and his apparent mother Rachel PERKINS where he is shown as a stepson. Per the 1900 census, Lloyd would be the brother of John Combs aka John C. Combs (see below). Perhaps a clue is whether Lloyd is the cousin to Melcena or to Beausford McKINZIE

Family Notes: Family previously found in Wayne Co., WVA in the 1900 census. The 1964 Ky. DC for John Combs states he was the son of Jack Combs and Rachael HELMS. John was married to Minnie per descendant Rev. Steve Mitchell, the 1912 BC for their son James, and the 1917 DC for their son John (see below). No marriage record has been located for John and Minnie, nor for Rachel HELMS Combs? and Sherman PERKINS. According to his DC, John C. Combs was born 8 May 1884 and he died 25 April 1964 at the age of 79 in Ashland, Boyd Co., Ky. (DC #1685057). Steve Mitchell further adds that John C. Combs had brothers named Lloyd and Harry and that Steve's grandfather Lloyd G. Combs (son of John and Minnie) had an uncle named Lloyd who lived in Orton Ohio, and that he also had a sister named Mary Combs SANDERS (d/o of John C Combs) who was married to Craten SANDERS. Mary's funeral was 30 July 1992 and members of the PERKINS family came to the funeral. Per BCs (see below) Mary Combs SANDERS had two sons named John C. SANDERS and James SAUNDERS. John Combs Jr. (s/o of John C. Combs and Minnie) died in 1917 (see DC below) as a result of a train accident.

According to Steve Mitchell, John C. Combs was married four times. He and first wife Minnie Combs had 7 children:

Lloyd G Combs, b. 29 Aug 1905 Huntington, WVA, d. Jan 18 1959 in VA hosp, Lake City, FL, buried Suncet Hill Cemetary, Valdosta, GA. Lloyd Combs married Emma Gearhart and Mary Jernigan of Lowndes Co., Valdosta, GA.

Rachael Combs who died as an infant or perhaps stillborn.

Per family tradition, Minnie left John C. Combs, perhaps with another man whose name is unknown. This man brought Minnie and John's young son (possibly Carl Patrick) back to his father John. No record of Minnie has been found after the 1920 Boyd Co. census where she is found still living with John. It is believed she may have gone to Catlettsburg. The Rev. Stephen Mitchell descends Martha Ann Combs MITCHELL HART, d/o of Lloyd G. Combs and Mary JERNIGAN

Jackson, Ky., Nov. 11--(AP) An election battle of three falls back--when four men were killed and seventeen were wounded in a fight between democrats and republicans--is revived today in the Clayhole precinct election cases, set for trial with the opening of the fall term of the Breathitt circuit court today. On July 15, a continuation to November of the remainder of the cases, brought back to the Breathitt court after having been sent to the Boyd circuit court on a change of venue, was granted.

The pistol battle marked an alleged successful attempt to prevent an election in the precinct on November 8, 1921. Asbury Combs, Cleveland Combs, Ethan Allen, democrats and George McIntosh, republican were slain. The ballot boxes were destroyed and the balloting terminated.

Several months later, the grand jury returned indictments against Leslie Combs, French Combs, Shade Combs and George Allen, Jr., charging them with murder in connection with the death of McIntosh. ...
