Notes: Elizabeth "Eliza" Combs m 5 May 1828, Charlotte Co, VA, William RUTLEDGE and they are found in the 1850 Charlotte Co, VA Census with her mother, listed as Nancy CUMBE [sic], b ca 1778, Campbell Co, VA; d 28 Nov 1854, Lunenburg Co, VA (listed as Nancy Combs, age 78, b Campbell Co, VA, widow, mother-in-law of William RUTLEDGE). Nancy seems likely (not documented) to have been the above Nancy FARTHING. See also the Nancy Combs on the 1830 Halifax Co, VA Census.

Notes: An Emanuel Combs (CAMBEE, CUMBER) is found in King George Co, VA as early as 1724. He appears to have been the same who was with a Joseph Combs on both the 1738 Rent Rolls of Prince William and Northumberland Cos, VA. In 1751, a Peter COMBON is listed on the 1751 Lunenburg Co, VA tax lists, and on 01 Dec 1810 an Emmanuel Combs patented 225 Acres on the head of the Clover Hollow waters of Sinking Creek a br. of New River adj. David PRICE in Montgomery Co, VA. In 1820, the US Census Index lists a Peter and Emanuel CUMBEE in Campbell Twp. of Berkeley Co, VA (both on p. 142), which could (given the errors in Census Indices) have been Campbell County instead (no Combs found on census here after 1810, but some var. sp. may have been missed). See also Cumbo, Cumbs, etc. as var. sp. for Combs, &c. in both Halifax and Russell Cos, VA, particularly the Nancy Combs of the 1830 census where also is found a Nancy COMBEE, and where the given names Peter and Charles are found amongst the Combee/Cumbee/Combs of that county.
Also Note: Although Peter's appears likely to have been a first marriage, if this is the same Emanuel who m Millie FARTHING in 1800, it was probably a second marriage??? Charles not yet located in 1810.
