Combs &c. Families of Charlotte Co, VA |
---|
Charlotte County was established from Lunenburg Co VA in 1764, with Prince Edward to the northeast, Lunenburg to the east, Mecklenburg to the southeast, Halifax to the southwest, and Bedford (part later Campbell) to the west. Combs records for Charlotte Co VA are so few as to be almost non-existant; however, as is noted below, it may be that their land was actually in Lunenburg, not Charlotte Co, VA. We know of at least one Combs, RW Soldier William Combs, who came to Charlotte Co VA from Wilkes Co, NC (See Below); and it appears there may have been possible connections in Charlotte to CALLICOATS (& VAUGHANS?), CARLTON/CHARLTONS, COOKS and NANCES. Research of this county, however, is still in early stages, and much further information is still needed.
See also the new Combs Research Report for John Combs of Amelia Co, VA.
No Combs Land has been located in Charlotte Co VA as yet; however, it appears that there either was land, or that it was on a county line, based on the following deed:
6 July 1767 (CharCo. COB2:14). On motion of George Combs a Witness for our Sovereign Lord, the King in his suit against Thomas SMITH it is ordered that William THOMASON the Prosecutor pay him for one day attendance according to law. On motion of John Combs a Witness for our Sovereign Lord, the King in his suit against Thomas SMITH it is ordered that William THOMASON the Prosecutor pay him for one day attendance according to law. On motion of Judith Combs a Witness for our Sovereign Lord, the King in his suit against Thomas Smith it is ordered that William THOMASON the Prosecutor pay him for one day attendance according to law.(Charlotte Co., Va. Court Order Books 1 & 2, 1767-1771, FHC Microfilm of originals. Submitted by Sue Elfving.)
Notes: It is not known who Judith Combs was, but George and Phoebe Combs had a daughter Judith who signed her own consent when she married Jesse DODSON in Halifax Co. on 19 Mar 1793 (Halifax Co VA Marriage Records). This Judith is likely an older Judith, perhaps a sister or sister-in-law. Old John Combs of Amelia was deceased by 1762. This John Combs could be a son of Old John or a son of George and Phoebe.
Aug. 6, 1770 (Charlotte Co VA DB 2:326) Aug. 6, 1770. Richard BLANKS of Buckingham Co. to Abraham CHARLTON (also spelled CARLTON) of Cumberland Co. for 50 pds., 215 acs. in Charlotte on both sides of a branch of the Meherrin River (known as Pledgars Creek). Beginning at COMB'S corner, along old patent line, and bounded by the line of BROWN. Wits: None. /s/Richard (X) BLANKS. Recorded Aug. 6, 1770. Relinquished by Uriah, wife of Richard BLANKS.
Notes: The above-referenced Combs land has not been located as yet; however, it may have been that of George Combs and on the Lunenburg Co, VA line.
4 March 1771 (CharCo. COB2:458). John PETTUS is appointed Surveyor of the Road whereof Robert BREEDLOVE was late Surveyor and it is ordered that he Together with the usual hands that work on the said Road Except Guillame's hands who are to work under Joseph FRIEND and Ambros HAMMOND'S Hands, under the said PETTUS do Forthwith Clear and keep the said Road in Repair according to law.
Notes: This entry is included because it shows that Ambrose HAMMON(D) lived in Charlotte Co., Va. He later removed to Wilkes Co., NC., where his daughter Elizabeth married the RW Soldier John AMBURGEY, moved to what is now Knott Co., Ky., and left a huge number of descendants, many of whom intermarried with the Combs families. Ambrose's son John HAMMON Sr. removed to Russell Co., Va., where his daughter Jane married Thomas FRANCIS. They later relocated to Perry Co. (now Knott Co.) and many of their descendants intermarried with descendants of the Combs. Thomas and Jane also had two daughters that intermarried with descendants of William and Anna THOMPSON Combs of Russell Co., Va.
6 May 1771 (CharCo. COB2:474). Sherwood WALTON is appointed surveyor of the Road from the Nine mile tree to the four mile Tree and it is ordered that he together with the male Labouring Tythes belonging to Lewis DUPREE, Nathaniel WILLIAMS, John WILLIAMS, George Combs, John HAYES, Josiah VAUGHN, Edward HARRIS, Stephen HARRIS, Edward HARRIS Jun., Maynard HARRIS, David HARRIS, William HAMMONS, David GIBSON and George GIBSON, do forthwith clear and keep the same in repair according to Law. (Charlotte Co., Va. Court Order Books 1 & 2, 1767-1771, FHC Microfilm of originals. Abstracted and submitted by Combs &c Researcher Sue Elfving)
Notes: This road order appears to be for a five mile stretch and it may help to identify exactly where these folks lived. It has been believed that George COMBS who appears in both Charlotte Co. and Lunenberg Co. records might have lived near the line between the two counties. See 1770 deed. Since Ambrose HAMMON is now found in Charlotte Co. records, the William Hammons in this road entry may be the same as Rev. William HAMMONS, brother to Ambrose (see 4 March 1771 road order showing Ambrose HAMMON).

SE Note: This John Hammonds appears to be John (son of Ambrose) Hammons [Sr.] who moved with Ambrose to Surry/Wilkes Cos., NC. John later moved up into Russell Co., Va. He had many descendants who later intermarried with the Combs in Perry, Letcher, and Knott Cos.

Note: The above is the only COOK marriage located in these records. Our interest in the COOKS of Charlotte Co VA is due to the following record:
