Sullivan Co TN (then still NC) was organized from Washington Co NC (TN) in 1779. Important! For a number of years, land which "should have been" in Sullivan Co TN - including the "North of Holston" and Carter Valley Settlements, was considered part of Virginia, and Tennesseans taxed by Old Fincastle, Montgomery and Washington Cos VA rather than by NC. In fact, even today, you need to check the Virginia Counties if your ancestors were "County-Line Combs." In 1784, the ill-fated State of Franklin was created (records now mostly lost and/or duplicated in TN county records), and in 1787, Hawkins Co was created from the majority of Sullivan's territory (and then some). In 1790, NC ceded it's "western lands" and TN became part of the "Territory South of the Ohio River," which it remained until 1796 and statehood. Sullivan Co TN remained generally the same (land) from 1787 on. Note: See Also Earliest Combs to TN (then NC). References to other Combs Counties may indicate additional information
Background: It is difficult to know whom were the Earliest Combs to Sullivan County due to it being a "burnt" (courthouse) county. Whether they included any of the same Combs who were earlier in Washington Co TN is not yet known. Although few Combs are found in the early records of Sullivan Co TN, Dickey Diary Interviews of a number of Combs descendants later in East KY indicate that their ancestors were from "Long Island of the Holston" in Sullivan Co, TN, and imply that other relatives remained behind when their own families left for Clay & Floyd (later Perry) Cos, KY.
It appears that at least two separate Combs Lines were in early Sullivan County - one line being descendants of Mason COMBS, Sr. of Richmond, Stafford & Frederick Cos VA who d c1785 in Surry Co, NC; and the other the line of Jonathan COMBS of PA (see also the "stray" Jonathan in early Frederick Co, VA), but possibly more likely kin to the Monmouth NJ - Shenandoah Co, VA COMBS.
Even though the Combs themselves have not all been identified and/or recorded, Combs-Associated Families who are believed to have accompanied them have been found of record, and are also included herein.
ca 1780 The pension application of RW Thomas BROWN of Warren Co TN (son of William BROWN of Augusta VA, Rowan NC & Waxhaws [Lancaster Co?], SC), whose Pension Application stated he moved to the Holston River in Sullivan Co, TN c1780. (See Also his brother, RW Robert BROWN, who sold land in 1797 on Dodson Creek, Hawkins Co TN, to Martin JOHNSON, h/o Sarah COMBS & associate of Mason COMBS (Jr.?) of Hawkins TN. These BROWNS, COMBS & JOHNSONS all later to Warren Co, TN. See also Combs-Browns of Clay Co, KY)
22 Nov 1783. (Sullivan Co., TN Deed Book 2, p. 523) Deed of Warranty. Patrick HENERY Junr. & Sarah, his wife. of Hanover Co. (Attny at Law) to William CHRISTIAN, Gentleman of Fincastle Co. £400 current money of VA for 3,335 acres of 3 different tracts in Fincastle Co: 1st tract contains 1,400 acres lying on Mockeson Creek; 2nd tract contains 940 acres lying on the middle fork of the Indian River; 3rd tract contains 995 acres lying on the middle fork of the Indian River between DAVIS & the Royal Oak. Which 3 tracts were granted to John SHELTON by patents 16 Aug 1756 & conveyed to Patrick HENERY, Junr. Witnesses: Hugh CROCKETT, David THOMPSON, John THOMPSON. Signed : P. HENERY Junr (seal), Sarah HENERY (seal); Virginia: at a General Court held at the Capitol 6 May 1774 this indenture & the receipt endorced were acknowledged by Patrick HENERY, Junr. Proven by Hugh CROCKETT, a witness, 1st day of June Session 1792, Sullivan Co. (Abstracted by Combs Researcher C. Hammett)
Combs Question: Might the above David THOMPSON been the same who m 17 Aug 1785, Montgomery Co VA (descendant county of Fincastle), Nancy CODY, d/o William & Sinai STACY Cody, brother-in-law to Benjamin & Ann COMBS Stacy and William & Ann STACY Combs, all earlier of Surry Co NC? (See Cody-Combs-Stacy Connections and see below). Also Note: The above land was probably very close to the Washington Co VA line, and according to The Combes Genealogy… by Dr. Josiah H. Combs, Chapter VI, page 40, William COMBS (h/o Sithe STACY - see below) owned land on Moccassin Creek that lay in both Washington and Russell Cos VA (Washington VA records not yet located).
16 Dec 1784 (Halifax Co VA DB13:116) "Know all men by thers presents that I, George RIDLEY of Sullivan County, State of North Carolina [TN], do appoint Mr. James JOHNSON of Halifax County, State of Virginia, my lawful attorney to dispose of all my lands in Halifax County, and to grant deeds for same. /s/ George RIDLEY, Senr.; Dated & Rec. 16 Dec. 1784 (Emigration to Other States From Southside Virginia, Vol. 1, compiled by Katherine B. Elliott, Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, Pg.37)
Combs Question: Was James JOHNSON of Halifax VA father of the JOHNSONS who intermarried with the daughters of Thomas DODSON of Richmond, Fauquier & Halifax Cos, VA; & Hawkins Co, TN, whose son, Jesse, m in Halifax Co VA in 1793, Judah COMBS, d/o George & Phebe COMBS of Amelia & Halifax Cos VA? (Jesse & Judah COMBS Dodson were later in Grainger, then White & Warren Cos TN) Or possibly grandfather to Martin & William JOHNSON of Hawkins & Warren Cos TN and Madison Co AR?
The earliest recorded COMBS located in Sullivan County thus far are John & William in 1788:
1788 (Capt. Thomas VINCENT'S Militia Co)
Private John COMBS
(Sullivan TN Militia Company)
Notes: The identity of Private John COMBS has not yet been documented (he is not found again in the early records of Sullivan County); however, he may have been, in order of likelihood: (a) John COMBS, s/o William & Sith STACY COMBS, Sr. and gs/o Mason & Sarah COMBS, Sr. (See next); (b) RW John "8" COMBS whose son, John, b ca 1792, stated in 1853 in Owsley Co KY that his parents had lived on "Long Island of the Holston" when he was a child; (c) John COMBS of Jefferson Co TN (h/o Sarah MABRY); or (d) a "traveller" passing through. Nor is his relationship to later COMBS of Sullivan County, if any, known. He may also have been the John COMBS found in the records of early Washington Co NC/TN (See Also COMBS &c. of the Revolutionary War), but was most likely the son of William & Seth STACY COMBS, and grandson of Mason COMBS, Sr. based on the following:
26 July, 1788 (Sullivan Co TN Deed Book 1, p. 362) William COMBS and Sethe, his wife, of Sullivan County, NC to Phillip FOUSE of Sullivan County, NC, 200 Acres, witnessed by John LOWRY and Seth PORTERFIELD. (Families and History of Sullivan County, TN, Vol. 1, 1779-1992)
Notes: The above couple are William & Sitha STACY COMBS - William having been the son of Mason & Sarah COMBS, Sr., and Sitha having been the d/o Simon & Judith TOLSON Stacy, both their births recorded in The Overwharton Parish Register of Stafford Co VA. From Stafford Co VA, the two families (COMBS & STACY) are next found in Frederick Co VA, and thence in Rowan & Surry Cos NC. In 1781 William and (his brother?) Mason COMBS were in Montgomery Co, VA, and William is probably the same who signed a Watauga Petition in 1787, along with William COMBS, Jr., Henry COMBS, William STACEY, Adam COUMB, Daniel AGEE & John COMAY (consecutively). It is believed that the above Philip FOUSE was more likely FOUST based on FOUSTS of the 1796 Sullivan Co TN Tax List and the 1830 Sullivan Co TN Census. (See Early COMBS of Frontier Tennessee) William & Sith STACY COMBS are believed to have been next recorded in Russell Co VA, thence later possibly in Hawkins Co TN, and lastly back in Russell.
1790 RW Soldier John ROCK declared in his 1832 Washington Co TN pension application that he enlisted in the war in Augusta Co VA, had removed to Sullivan Co TN ca 1790, w/wife Nancy, d/o John & Rachel BRYAN (a.k.a. O'BRIEN), named COMBS grandchildren Mrs. Nancy COMBS and John Washington COMBS, the latter d/o his daughter, Caty CONKLIN.. See Also 1830 Washington Co TN Census, and RW Pension File of John ROCK, and Family Bible of William K. COMBS
7 Oct 1790 (Sullivan Co TN Deed Book 2, p. 424) Solomon COMBS was a witness to deed between Joseph RODGERS and John ROLER. ("Families and History of Sullivan County, TN," Vol. 1, 1779-1992)
Notes: The above Solomon COMBS m 11 Jan 1781 in Shenandoah Co VA, Elizabeth MARR, and is also probably the same found on the 1787 Washington Co TN Tax List. He was the s/o Job COMBS of Monmouth Co NJ and Shenandoah Co VA, and d bef 1793, possibly in Greene Co, TN.
14 Jan 1791 (Sullivan Co TN Deed Book 2, p. 441) Describes land owned by BRITTON, adjacent to COMBS, ANDERSON, John LOWRY, PORTERFIELD, 252 Acres on waters of Fall Creek (Families and History of Sullivan County, TN, Vol. 1, 1779-1992)
Notes: See above William COMBS of 1788 Sullivan Co TN deed with witnesses John LOWERY and Seth PORTERFIELD. Was that land on Fall Creek also? Where was Fall Creek? Important: Who was ANDERSON?
1795-1796 The RW Pension File of William CORNETT includes statements that he m Mary EVERAGE in Apr 1796 in Sullivan Co TN. Thomas CODY, s/o William and Sinai STACY Cody (thus nephew of Benjamin & Ann COMBS Stacy, & William & Seth STACY COMBS, Sr.), states he was present at the wedding, held at the house of George MORRISON (m Mary "Polly WOODS, d/o Jonathan of Russell Co, VA)…CODY, CORNETTS, STACYS and COMBS were later in Clay & Floyd Co KY (later Perry Co). Supporting affidavits also from Elijah COMBS, Sr. (s/o John & Nancy COMBS) and Samuel COMBS, b 1799, TN, s/o Nicholas & Nancy GRIGSBY COMBS, Sr. (see below), had married Nancy CORNETT, d/o William & Mary EVERAGE Cornett (See Also William CORNETT & applicable COMBS Counties) According to the Dickey Diary interview of Johns S. COMBS of Perry Co, KY (s/o Jeremiah and Synthia SUMNER COMBS and gs/o (1) Nicholas & Nancy GRIGSBY COMBS, Sr. and (2) Samuel & Winnifred COMBS Sumner (Hicks); "Old Wm. CORNETT came with my uncles to KY; also Richard SMITH, great grandfather of "Bad" Tom SMITH. He settled on Troublesome" (Richard SMITH was son-in-law of Nicholas "8" COMBS, Sr. See next).

John HAWK
Jacob HICKS
Jonathan MORRELL (m 17 Apr 1774, Shenandoah Co VA, Caty ODELL, d/o Caleb ODELL?)
(1796 Sullivan Co TN Tithables)
Notes: The above appears to have been a duplicate entry for Nicholas '8" COMBS, formerly of Shenandoah Co, VA, h/o Nancy GRIGSBY, and brother to RW John COMBS (1761-1848) of Shenandoah Co VA and Perry & Washington Cos KY
Nicholas COMOS [probably actually COMES]
Jonathan COMBS
Jacob HICKS
(Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists, Byron Sistler & Assoc., Nashville, TN)
Nicholas (& Nancy GRIGSBY) COMBS, Sr. who came to Sullivan Co TN from Shenandoah Co VA (although no apparent relation to the Monmouth NJ COMBS of that county), later removed to Clay Co, KY.
Jonathan COMBS of the 1797 tax list remained in Sullivan Co TN, where he apparently d aft 1850. The 1850 Sullivan Co TN census lists a Jonathan COMBS, age 75, b PA (See Below); thus, if the same Jonathan COMBS, he would have been ca 21 years of age. Does this indicate he was in Sullivan Co earlier, but not yet titheable? It is possible that he was somehow related to the Job, Robert and Jonathan COMBS of Frederick Co VA
06 Oct 1807 (Sullivan Co TN Deed Book 5, p. 62) Dorothy and John MILLER to Jonathan COMBS, 50 Acres, south side of the Holston River, witnessed by Thomas ROCKHOLD and Stephen WALLING. (Families and History of Sullivan County, TN, Vol. 1, 1779-1992)
02 Oct 1810 (Sullivan Co TN Deed Book 6, p. 115, Jonathan COMBS was a witness of 100 Acres from Stephen WALLING to Jonathan CARRIER along with Thomas GLOVER and John DELOCK. (Families and History of Sullivan County, TN, Vol. 1, 1779-1992)
(Sullivan TN Deed Book 6, p. 166) Stephen WALLING to Thomas GLOVER, a tract of land on south side of the Holston River, beginning on Thomas VANDEVENTER'S on the river. Witnessed by Jonathan COMBS, John DEDER. (Families and History of Sullivan County, TN, Vol. 1, 1779-1992)
Nicholas COMBS (1)
Jonathan COMBS
John HAWK
Jacob HICKS
Joseph STAR
Michael STAR
(Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists, Byron Sistler & Assoc., Nashville, TN)
Notes: Nicholas COMBS was listed on tax return of Capt. Everitt's 1812 Sullivan Co, TN Company, which indicates that (a) Nicholas was not in same district as Jonathan COMBS; (b) that he paid no Poll Tax (was not a resident of the county; taxed on 170 acres - see Clay and Floyd Cos KY); and (c) that he was in the same district as Michael STAR who later m widow of RW William COMBS of Wilkes Co, NC, d 1816, Sullivan Co, TN. Also note that Michael STAR is earlier found in Washington Co VA in 1795 where he and (1st?) wife, Catherine, sold land to Jacob MILLER. Michael STARR [sic] also appears on the 1815 Washington Co TN tax list.
22 May, 1815 (Sullivan Co TN Deed Book 7, p. 38) Jacob HAINES to Jonathan COMBS, 18 ½ Acres (Families and History of Sullivan County, TN, Vol. 1, 1779-1992) Witnesses?
Question: Was Jacob HAINES possibly kin to the HAINES/HAYNES Families of Surry Co NC?
9 Jun 1816 RW William COMBS died in Sullivan Co TN, formerly a resident of Wilkes Co NC, then Charlotte Co VA where he m (2nd?) in June 1800, Michale TRAYLOR, who married in 1823, Michael STAIRE [STARR?] who d 30 Dec 1835 in Jefferson Co [TN?]. She applied for RW Pension 23 Jun 1853 in Washington Co TN.

COMBS Researcher S. Kathryn Bowling McKown re BOWLINGS: Page 316, L08 Isaac BOLIN is the son of John BOLIN, Sr. and remains in Sullivan Co TN until his death before 1870. L09 Larkin BOLIN leaves before 1850 and I think he goes to KY. A Joel, & James that I have found in different records disappear also at the same time. I also believe he is related to John BOLIN, Sr. in some manner, don't know how yet. Page 319, L07 John BOLIN is John BOLIN, Jr., s/o John BOLIN, Sr. and he leaves before 1850 and I think he might have gone to KY. L08 John BOLIN is John BOLIN, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth and their son Tolliver. Everyone thinks John and Elizabeth died in 1835 or thereafter, but before 1840. They do not, he is found living with Tolliver (listed as head of household) in the 1840 Census. Tolliver and his wife Telitha have only one child that I can find: Larkin. Larkin married Jane STEWART and some of their desc. remain in Sullivan Co, TN to this date. Not yet known if these BOWLINGS are kin to either the COMBS-Bolling Families of Perry Co KY or those of Hardin Co KY.
Editor's Note to self: Check in particular, the stats for Edwards COMES (See Edmunds Combs 1840 Census), as Scott COMBS shows Edwards COMBS has having in HH 1 m:30-40; 1 f: 40-50; 3 f: 5-10; and 1 m: 0-5 (This is correct as recorded in the 1840 Census Tennessee Index by Byron and Barbara Sistler, 1986)

According to COMBS Researcher R Shell, A son, Robert, also named, was b to them on 10 Apr 1866 in Bluff City, Sullivan Co TN, died 9 Mar 1922 (death cert), but they have not been found on the 1870 census. (RS: death cert lists Robert's mother as indecipherable LITTLE). Also note: Two daughters named Sarah? COMBS Researcher Scott COMBS adds: Re Daniel, see 1880 census below.

KBM notes that the BOOHERS are listed adjacent to to John & Mary COMBS. Researcher John Kays showed as Valentine COMBS and Martha E. TAYLOR, and with Martha and Elizabeth in HH of John and Mary BOOKER COMBS, not Peter BOOHER.
Notes: Horace of the 1850 census, who would have been ca14 in 1860 is missing, but Peter who would have been ca12 in 1850 has been added to 1860, except that in 1870, Horace is back at age 22, with no Peter-Were Horace and Peter the same individual? Catherin TAYLOR is gone, but Martha E. TAYLOR in HH. Perhaps Catherin was not a widow (or grass-widowed?) and now remarried? With Martha either her child from TAYLOR marriage - or later? Amanda, age 10 in 1850, appears to have been same who m General TAYLOR in Carter Co TN in 1855. is missing from the 1860 census, but may be same who is in HH with Susan BOLING in 1870. (See Below) SC Note: Proximity of Martha and Elizabeth suggests they may have been daughters of John and Mary BOOKER COMBS. Martha not found in 1870; however, see Elizabeth below in ARRANT'S HH.

COMBES, Agnis 71 TN
Notes: Per Scott COMBS, in 1860, Agnes COMBS was in the Carter Co TN HH of her husband, Joseph who was apparently deceased by 1870. She was not in her son-in-law John RILEY'S house in 1880 (Sullivan, 387b), and was likely deceased. Scott also shows that (a) Agnis was listed as a widow; and (b) Mary Combs, and children James and Martha are in household of Eli Watson, Joseph Combs neighbor in 1860. William Combs m. Mary Watson in 1860. Agnes' presence on the same page of this census with near (within 12 HHs) to Jonathan and Thomas COMBS' families makes it more probable that her husband, Joseph, was possibly a son to Jonathan COMBS, b ca 1775, PA.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Cemetery Relocation at the South Holston Reservoir, Sullivan Co, TN, by S. Kathryn Bowling McKown (See Copyright Restrictions) "The Tennessee Valley Authority started the relocation of graves from different cemeteries in the Holston Valley in the 1930's . The graves had to be removed as the filling of the reservoir would flood or isolate many of these cemeteries. Many graves were left where they were, and that area flooded. The project was put on hold in 1942 and resumed in 1947. Twenty Cemeteries were used for the reinterrment of the bodies removed from cemeteries affected by the filling of the Holston Reservoir."
