Greene Co, North Carolina was established in 1783 from Washington Co, North Carolina; in 1784 became part of provisional state of Franklin (attempted breakaway from NC); and in 1790 became part of the "Territory South of the Ohio River" (administered by Congress following cession of lands by North Carolina). In 1792, Jefferson and Knox Cos were each est. from Greene and Hawkins; and in 1796 Tennessee achieved statehood. See Also Early Combs of Frontier Tennessee
05 Jan 1785 (Greene Co, Tennessee Marriage Bond 19) January 5, 1785 Francis HARBISON -- Jamina (sic) Combs - Alex McLAUGHLIN (GREENE COUNTY, TENNESSEE MARRIAGES, 1783-1868, Compiled by Goldene Fillers Burgner, published 1981 by Southern Historical Press, reprinted 1991, p. 1, hereinafter Greene Marriages, extracted by Combs Researcher Connie Sheets who adds: Although the compiler offers no explanations or column headings, it appears that the number which precedes the earlier marriages is the number on the bond certificate and that the third name mentioned is the name of the person posting the bond. The first name is definitely the groom and the second name is definitely the bride (or at least that has been the case for my families).
