A Special Report prepared by
Combs Researcher Louise S. Converse
(also includes numerous other locations) |
Ed. Note: For those who are new to genealogical research, Louise's work here is a lesson in "how to do it right." In particular, note her use of the 1900 census, which includes the number of children born, and her subsequent efforts to locate and identify those children. In other words, as it should be, Louise has researched backwards. <g> See also the applicable Combs Counties of Record, particularly Carroll, Grayson, Logan and Raleigh Cos, VA; and Surry Co, NC. See Also Josiah H. Combs' The Combes Genealogy…, including Chapter XXI Ned Combs Line, of Carroll County, Virginia, a manuscript by Frederick Harmon Combs. Also note when reading this report and that of Grayson and Carroll Cos, VA, the close associations between the Combs, Hawk, Payne and Johnson Families, and then see the also closely-associated Combs, Hawk, Payne and Johnson Families of Warren Co, TN where one Jacob Johnson of Grayson County also resided.

2 JOSEPH COMBS b. 14-Jun-1802 Grayson Co., VA d. 9-Jan-1874 Lambsburg, Carroll Co., VA m. 23-Mar-1825 Grayson Co., VA CAROLINE WILLS b. 24-Jan-1807 Grayson Co., VA d. 16-Dec-1859 Lambsburg, Carroll Co., VA
- Most of the Piper's Gap Combs families descend from Joseph and Caroline or from William and Jane CARTER COMBS. William may have been Joseph's uncle. Joseph's brothers and sisters settled at Coal River Marshes in Raleigh Co., W. Va. Only Joseph remained in Carroll County. Joseph and Caroline's Marriage Bond, 1825-10, was posted in Grayson County, Edward JONES, surety, March 23, 1825. Caroline was his niece.
- According to the Carroll County 1860 Census, Joseph owned Real Estate valued at $300. and Personal Property worth $60. Caroline died of liver complaint. (Death Records, 1853-1896, Microfilm, Virginia State Library, Archives).
- Old records relating to Hiram WILLS are plentiful, but of most interest is one between Hiram and Abraham HAWKS. Hiram purchased 100 acres on Paul's Creek, 17 Mar 1801, which was described as "plantation whereon William HILL now lives." (Patrick, D.B. 2-52). The division line was made in the presence of William HILL and Drury HAWKS. Three years later, Hiram sold this tract to "William HILL, of Patrick Co."
- In the 1815 Grayson County Personal Property Tax List, March 31, "Hierom WILLS" was taxed $0.90 for two white males over 16, and three horses and nine head of cattle. The 1815 Real Estate Assessments show him assessed for one farm on Crooked Creek of 50 acres, having thereon two "cabbens," valued at $50., another of 60 acres, $40., 200 acres, with one "cabben'" $80. He signed, "Hierom WILLS."
- Deeds and land entries relating to Hiram in Patrick and Grayson, date from 1797 thru 1815. May 12, 1815, James JONES to Hiram WILLS, (Grayson, Entry A-166), Sep. 22, 1807, Aaron RITTER to Hiram WILLS, 20 acres, part of Logan Tract (D.B., Grayson, 2-373), Sep 19, 1808 and Stephen JONES, to "Hyrom" Wills, 80 acres (Grayson, D.B. 2-432).
- An additional 60 acres from Aaron REUTOR (RITTER), John and Nancy JONES, 106 acres to "Hierum WELLS," (Patrick, D.B. 1-442), another 200 acres, Stephen JONES, 19 Apr 1798, (Patrick D.B. 1-512), deed filed, not recorded, 10 Oct 1815, 200 acres: Hiram and Mary WILLS to Eliphlet JOHNSON (Ref. Patrick D.B. 1-512).
- The interaction and dealings between these early families, many to whom we trace some relationship, is of great interest.
- Hiram and Mary were living in Carroll when the 1850 Census was taken. Hiram was probably dead before the 1860 Census.
- There is a preponderence of old records using Surname, "WILLS." Some of Hiram's children migrated to Raleigh County, where Zedekiah COMBS' children (with the exception of Joseph) settled. The Censuses (1860 - 1920), Raleigh County, West Virginia, have always recorded these families as "WILLS." Sarah COMBS, Zedekiah's daughter, married William WILLS and they settled at Marsh Creek in Raleigh County, and many descendants remained in that area. A handwritten Indenture, recording land sale between Abraham HAWKS and Hiram, spells the name "WILLS" and "WILLIS." Using a magnifying glass, the "i" in Surname is clearly dotted.
- Some of the early records spell the name, WELLS, but taking the evidence of other early records, and the acceptance of Censuses using WILLS, all names appear in my genealogy as "WILLS".
- In the 1850 Census, there was a 12 year old female, Susan TURNEY, TIERNEY or TUNNEY living in the household with Hiram and Mary. It may be that she was Susan KEARNEY, whose sister, Sarah, married St Clair COMBS, the son of Joseph COMBS and Caroline WILLS (Hiram's daughter). Children were often "farmed" out at rather early ages in those days.
- The KEARNEYS and COMBS and WILLS families were neighbors "on the top of the mountain." This family was connected to Vincent TIERNEY or KEARNEY, who lived on top of the mountain in the 1820's.
- Mary, age 82, was in Wythe County 1860 Census in the household of her son-in-law, Newton WHEELER. Her youngest son, Daniel, age 48, was also in the household. In the Wythe Co. 1870 Census, Mary was absent, she had evidently died before this date, but Daniel still resided with Newton and Nancy. In 1880, Daniel was no longer in their household.

3 MARY ANN COMBS b. Abt 1823 Grayson Co., VA d. 21-Jun-1908 Carroll Co., VA m. 20-Dec-1845 Surry Co., NC HENRY HAWKS b. 25-Aug-1822 Grayson Co., VA d. 30-Dec-1888 Carroll Co., VA
- Mary was not listed in the 1900 Carroll County census. Documents dated August 20, 1902 show she applied for a Civil War Widow's pension.
- On May 30, 1900, the Carroll County Pension Board met and among those whose pensions were approved, Mary HAWKS, widow of Henry HAWKS, CSA service, Co. E, 45th Virginia Infantry, amount to be $25.00 annually. Her name was still on the Roll in May 1902. (VAN, August, 1991 issue, p. 101, #114, Confederate Pension Board Proceedings).
- The statement of Mary made in her application for pension said that her husband had died of general ill health and the effect of wound received in battle and pneumonia. The Physician's certificate was made by B. F. FULKS, who stated that the attending physician, Dr. WOLTZ, was deceased, "said that his death (Henry's) resulted from the war injury and pneumonia." The physician's certificate was dated July 1, 1902, the Circuit Court certified her entitlement for twenty-five dollars, Aug 20, 1902.
- The Justice of Peace signing the statement was J. L. HAWKS and the witnesses to Mary's signature to the petition were A.D. HAWKS and B. F. SHAW.
Charles W. HAWKS was the Commissioner of Revenue who certified she was not assessed for land or personal property. This certification was dated June 25, 1902. From this document, it is evident that she was still living as late as the latter part of August, 1902.
- Date and place of marriage given in the application was "in year 1844, in North Carolina." Mary stated that she was "nearly 77 years of age." (On May 30, 1900). Brent Holcomb's book listing early marriages of Surry County, gave date as 20 Dec 1845. One place on the statement with application gave Henry's death as "in the year 1889." The Death Record agrees with first date given on the application, 30 Dec 1888.
- Great-Grandmother's name, Mary Ann HAWKS, on the Marriage Records of both Great-Uncle Friel (page 28, line 84), and Alfred (34 - 68), is the only place I have seen her full name recorded, although Aunt Mary Addison said she was named Mary Ann Sarah for both her grandmothers.
- Henry bought the land his mother lived on in 1850 (Carroll, D. B. 3-300). He served in the 45th Virginia Infantry, Co. E, CSA, enlisted 24 Mar 1864 at Saltville. He was wounded in the shoulder and lung at Winchester, 19 Sep 1864. He was furloughed on sick leave for 60 days to return home to Carroll, 15 Feb 1865. He was to return 12 Apr 1865, three days after Lee surrendered to Grant on Apr 9th. His description, "5 feet 10 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair," given in these papers. They stated that he was permitted to go to his home, Carroll County. It stated he had pay due from 26 Mar 1864, and "had subsistance furnished him to the __ day of Feby 1865." The Regimental Surgeon stated that Henry was unable to perform his duties because of "Genl Anasaica." This was Anasaarca: Generalized massive edma (swelling and excess body fluid.) Another term for condition was dropsy. He received clothing, 4th quarter, 1864, present or absent, not stated on final roll. He may have been in the Regimental Hospital at that time. He settled in the upper end of Lambsburg between the Blue Ridge and the Sugar Loaf Ridge. He and Mary were both buried in the Hawks Family Cemetery near Bobbitt's Hollow in unmarked graves.
- Henry was one of the organizers of the Elk Spur Baptist Church, Dec 1873, when it was constituted with eleven members.
- Mary was known as "Polly," in Dr. Josiah H. Combs' book, "Combses Genealogy," p. 120. She lived with my Great-Uncle Fayette HAWKS, her youngest son, after the death of her husband. Her older children made a deed giving the land owned by Henry at the time of his death to their brother, Fayette, on condition that he provide for her during the rest of her natural life and provide her with decent burial after her death. The deed was recorded 19 Oct 1891 in Deed Book No. 20, page 248.
- Henry died of general ill health resulting from his injury during the War, and pneumonia (Reference: Application for Pension by Mary Hawks made 30 May 1900, and the Physician's statement which was attached, and was dated on July 1, 1902).
3 NANCY COMBS b. 16-Jul-1828
- In The Combes Genealogy… by Dr. Josiah H. Combs, on page 120, the information was given that she had two sons, Floyd, who married Mattie DAVIS and Isaac, who married Malinda LUNDY.
- In the 1850 Carroll County Census, she lived in the household next to her parents, Joseph and Caroline (WILLS) COMBS, with two small children, Floyd, age 5 and Mandaney, female, age 1. I have not been able to locate her in 1860. In 1870 Grayson County, there were two households with Nancy COMBS, it looks as if she was recorded twice, the differences between the two households are insignificant.
- In one household, Nancy, age 35, Richard, age 16, Isaac W., age 14, Malinda, age 10, Sarah, age 7. In the other, Nancy, age 39, Stephen, age 18, Isaac, age 14, Sarah C., age 10 and Sarah M. age 7. Actually, Nancy's age in the 2nd household was closer, but Isaac's Initial in the first and Malinda, rather than Sarah C. makes me believe it's the same family.
- In 1880, Malinda was the 2nd wife of John W. POOL, Nancy, m-i-l, in this household. Her son, Rush Floyd and his family lived in near vicinity.
- In 1900 Grayson Co., Malinda, widowed, and 4 of her 7 children still living at home, and her mother, Nancy, age 71, (4 living children of 6). Mandaney may have died as a child, Richard (Stephen) must be the other child that died. I'm assuming that Richard of the 1st household and Stephen of the 2nd were the same person.
- I believe all of Nancy's children have now been identified.

3 SINCLAIR (ST CLAIR) MARION COMBS b. 2-Jul-1829 Grayson Co., VA d. 11-Nov-1900 Carroll Co., VA m. 17-Sep-1849 Surry Co., NC SARAH KEARNEY b. 8-Jan-1832 NC d. 26-Jan-1908
- The marriage bond for St Clair and Sarah listed Henry Hawks, as bondsman. Henry was the husband of St Clair's sister, Mary COMBS. The description given in B.F. Scott's, "45th Virginia Infantry," said that St Clair was 5' 8" tall, had dark complexion, dark hair and dark eyes.
- Both St Clair and Sarah grew up in Piper's Gap, near the top of the mountain.
- Gilbert Sumner once told his niece, Grace Smith Birkhead, that St Clair was a pleasant man but Sarah was very stern. He related that if St Clair was away from home too long, he would toss his hat into the house when he returned. If it came flying back out, then he would go someplace until he thought his wife had time to cool down.
- St Clair enlisted 29 May 1861, Co. E, 45th Virginia Regiment, at Wytheville. He was an original member of the Regiment. The 45th was organized about May 29, 1861, with 10 Companies, and reorganized on May 14, 1862. He was detailed as a nurse for 19 days at the hospital at Sweet Sulphur Springs.
- After the Battle at Cross Lanes, on Aug 28, 1861, he was part of a detail (Regimental Order #77), sent to the rear to escort Federal prisoners. He spent 16 days on this detail and was given leave in Nov 1861. In Mar 1862, he remained behind his Unit with a sick man, near the Mouth of Indian Creek in Monroe County. For this duty, he was given $1.20 for rations for 2 days, 25 Mar to 27 Mar 1862, when he rejoined his Regiment at Camp Narrows, Giles Co., Apr 30, 1862.
- Much of 1863 and 1864 he was detailed as a teamster, but in late 1864 he returned to field duty. He was captured at Waynesboro, 2 Mar 1865 and taken to Ft. Delaware on Mar 12, 1865. He was released on 19 Jun 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
- It is believed there were thirteen children, but only eleven are proven (through names given to Grace S. Birkhead by her grandmother, Paulina (COMBS) Sumner, St Clair and Sarah's daughter).
- I recently found two more children in the updated (March 1992) microfiche of the International Genealogical Index. I have added these two children, however, I have not yet verified the information. One of these two, Rena, may be Ariena, though the birthdates differ. The second child added, S. E., only the birthdate, son of St Clair COMBS and Sarah Kearney, was entered on the Index. Information may be questionable, but worth investigation.
3 HIRAM WESLEY COMBS b. Sep 1833 Grayson Co., VA d. Feb 1905 Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co., NC m. 1862 KY FANNIE E. COMBS? b. Mar 1843 Floyd Co., KY
- Hiram was an original member of the 45th Virginia Infantry, the Piper's Gap Company, Co. E. He served all of the 1861 campaign in West Virginia until near the end of the year, when he was sent home on furlough. While still at home, his health deteriorated and there is no record of his returning to field duty with the Unit.
- The 1900 Census listed his daughter, Lucinda, and 3 grandchildren, Violet, b. 15 Oct 1887, Cellia A., b. Jan 1889 and David E., b. Dec 1892. Lucinda was evidently their only child, the Census stated they had one child, one living.
- Violet's birth record gives parents, Hiram W. and Lucinda, 1900 Census, says granddaughter.
3 STEPHEN CLARK COMBS b. Oct 1834 Carroll Co., VA d. 1919 Washington Co., VA m. 18-Sep-1867 Carroll Co., VA AMANDA PAYNE b. 21-Oct-1841 Carroll Co., VA d. 1912
- Located Stephen in Washington County, Abingdon District, 1900, Household #215/218. "Combses Genealogy," by Dr. Josiah H. Combs, reported that he lived in Washington County about the last 25 years of his life.
- He was in Carroll County in the 1880 Census. He and Amanda were still in Washington County in 1910. In the 1900 Census, they had 6 children, 5 living.
- Amanda was the daughter of Jackson PAYNE and Eliza (HANKS) Payne. Eliza was Jackson's first wife, and after her death, Jackson married Margaret HAWKS, daughter of Abraham HAWKS, Jr. His family, consisting of Margaret, three children of Eliza's, Rosamond, Amanda and Nancy, and Calvin, Margaret's 6 mo. old baby, were found in Household #559, 11th District, Carroll County, 1850 Census.
- Stephen was in Carroll County in 1880, the children were listed out of age order in this census; Floyd W., Sarah E., Serepta A., David C. and Eliza C. Should have been Sarah E., Serepta A., Floyd W., David C. and Eliza C.
3 MARTHA J. COMBS b. 1838 m. (1) 3-Feb-1856 Surry Co., NC MARTIN HAWKS b. 5-Apr-1831 d. 1-Aug-1863 Camp in Greenbrier Co., VA; m. (2) 16-May-1869 Alleghany Co., NC MARTIN WOODS; m. (3) ______ LONG
Martin served in the Confederate Army, transferring from the 30th Battalion to the 45th Virginia, Co. E, 7 Nov 1862. He died of fever and Joseph JOHNSON, in a letter written from camp, 3 Aug 1863, stated "he (Martin) was put away in nice order he had a nice coffin."
3 JOHN CANNADY COMBS b. 6-May-1839 Grayson Co., VA d. 3-Apr-1913 Carroll Co., VA m. CHRISTINE DAVIS b. 9-May-1844 d. 22-Feb-1910
- John joined Co. E, 45th Virginia Infantry, 29 May 1861. He was absent sick during much of the first year of the war, and the early part of 1862. He saw most of the action in 1864, and according to Regimental Records, was transferred to Co. E, 29th Virginia Infantry, 20 Dec 1864.
3 SARAH ANN C. COMBS b. 5-Sep-1843 d. 14-Jan-1902 m. (1) DAVID LOYCE; m. (2) DAVID LANE d. Bef 1900
- Sarah lived in the home of her brother, David, in Mt. Airy at the time of the 1900 Census, age 56, widow. She had no children, according to the Census. Her name given, S.A. Lane, and relationship to Head of household, sister. Her first husband, David Loyce, moved to Carroll Co., from Dublin, Virginia.
3 ELIZABETH MALINDA COMBS b. Jun 1845 Carroll Co., VA d. 1922 m. 22-Dec-1866 ORVILLE HAWKS b. 1848 Cana, Carroll Co., VA d. 10-Apr-1893 Lambsburg, Carroll Co., VA
- In the 1850 Carroll County Census, Elizabeth M., age 4, was in the home of her parents. Her Census ages varied, 12 in 1860, and 22 in 1870 in the household of her husband, Orville. In 1900, she was the head of household with 5 of her children still living at home. The 1900 Census gave her birthdate as June 1845. Her headstone has 1843 - 1922.
- According to an entry in The Yadkin Valley News, April 13, 1893, Orville died from consumption. The newspaper wrote, "he was esteemed and respected by all who knew him."
3 JOSEPH FOY COMBS b. Nov 1849 m. 23-Feb-1867 Surry Co., NC LUCINDA STANTLIFF b. Mar 1849
- Dr. Josiah Combs in his book, "Combses Genealogy," gave Lucy's name as Lucy Stanley. Zula Faulkner Hawks Stone lists her as being one of the sisters of Zula's Grandmother, Rebecca Faulkner, nee Stantliff. Brent Holcomb's "Marriages of Surry County," lists the marriage for J. F. COMBS and Lucy Stantliff, bondsman, Fred Hawks and married by W. Golding, J.P. Dr. Josiah's information must be an error. The 1900 Census, Grayson County, Elk Creek, #257/261: Joseph, Lucy, and their son, William D. and wife, Cora and their two children, Mazie and Andrew.
- I visited Zula in the Fall of 1993 and she told me an amusing little story about Foy and Lucy's wedding night. It was a custom for young people to build their house to have it ready for their marriage. Somehow, the front door had not been hung before the wedding. Lucy hung a quilt across the door and the young couple settled in for the night. That night Zula's beloved grandmother, Rebecca, and one of her buddies decided to play a joke on the young couple. Rebecca put a sheet over her head and crept up to the front of the house, and had instructed her friend to climb into the pigpen and pull the pig's tail so it would squeal. Rebecca was moaning and making noises and the pig was squealing, when suddenly the quilt moved from the side of the door, and the barrel of a shotgun poked out. Rebecca screamed and yelled, "No, Foy! It's me, Becky, don't shoot! Don't shoot!"
3 DAVID CARROLL COMBS b. 28-Dec-1850 Carroll Co., VA d. 20-Feb-1940 m. 1875 RACHEL PAYNE b. 27-Jul-1853 d. 4-Feb-1944.
- The 1910 Census shows that David and Rachel had five children, four still living by that date. Ethel and Margie were still living at home. All five were living at the 1900 Census. The family lived on Rockford Street, in Mt. Airy, N. C. in 1900. Birth date, 28 Dec 1850, also from International Genealogical Index, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Salt Lake City, UT.

2 SARAH COMBS b. 15-Sep-1803 Grayson Co., VA d. 2-May-1859 Coal River Marshes, Raleigh Co., WV m. WILLIAM WILLS b. 1795/97 VA
- In Raleigh County, W.Va., 1860 Census, William was living with his daughter, Nervy, spinster. In the same vicinity, his sons, Hiram and Joseph Wills, were also living. His deceased wife, Sarah COMBS, was a sister of Joseph COMBS of Carroll County. Joseph and William's other brothers, John and Jeremiah COMBS, their sister, Nancy and her husband, John T. Sarrett, also were living at Coal River Marshes.
- The Grayson Co., Va. 1830 Census gave William's age between 30 and 40 years, having two sons between 5 and 10 yrs., 3 daughters under 5 and his wife, between 20 and 30. Census data after 1860, used to reconstruct his family is obviously incomplete. I have not yet located him in 1850, the 3 daughters under 5 in 1830 were probably married and unidentifable in Census. Minerva certainly was not one of the three, if the 1860 age is correct.
- The Annotated 1860 Raleigh Co. Census says that Jane, b. 1834, wife of Anderson Adkins, was d/o ____ and Sarah Wills. She would not be one of the missing three from the 1830 Census, however, she may be another daughter of William and Sarah. Her age would fit just after Jabez.
- Anderson was s/o Robert & Nancy Adkins, grandson of Parker and Mary Adkins. Anderson and Jane had a 1 yr. old son, Marshall (1860). In the 1870 Census, William was living in the household of his son-in-law, Jackson Massey. The Census gave William's age, 73 yr. (b. 1797).

- The 1880 Raleigh County Census included Sarah, age 9; Ruhama, age 8 and Henry, age 6, indicated as daughters and son. They may have been grandchildren, their ages seem a bit young to be Catherine's children.
3 JOSEPH WILLS b. Apr 1824 Grayson Co., VA d. 4-Aug-1919 Zada, Fayette Co., WV m. 3-Nov-1849 Fayette Co., WV JANE ELIZABETH SARRETT b. 18-Jan-1831 m. 22-Jul-1858 Raleigh Co., WV MARY JANE COLE b. June 1839 Floyd Co., VA
- Sarah and Frances were not in Joseph's household in 1870. They were children from his first marriage. Mary and Joseph married about 1859, according to the 1900 Census, had nine children, six living. Malinda was still home in 1880, and Virginia was three years old. Joseph was a Pharmacist and he owned Real Property valued at $500., and Personal Property, valued at $130., according to the 1870 Census.
- In 1900, grandsons, Howard M., b. Oct 1889, Ky.; Robert, b. Jul 1884, WVa.; and granddaughter, Beatrice, b. Apr 1888, WVa., resided with Joseph.

- I believe that Lucinda was widowed before 1910. At Marsh Fork, bit of interest, that Lucinda's son, Floyd, named a daughter, Sinda. This leads me to believe the Sinda Massey, 1910 Census, is Jackson's widow, and Floyd's mother.
- In the 1900 Raleigh County Census, she and Jackson were alone and stated they had seven children, five living.

- Susanna was married to William Farley, who was born Sep. 1843, before the 1900 Census. Her daughter, Flora Wills, b. Jan 1881, was living in their home. Susanna had eight children, seven were living when the 1900 Census was taken.
- William Farley married again, 15 Sep 1908, so my assumption is that Susanna was deceased before this date.

- William moved to Ohio in 1861. He enlisted in the Union Army, First Ohio Volunteers, 9 Jun 1862, Portsmouth, Ohio, was discharged, 25 Jul 1865, at Knoxville, Tennessee. He moved back to Arnett, lived about a year before his death, and is buried near Arnett.
- The 1860 Raliegh County Census, listed his profession, Violinist.

- The 1840 Census for Grayson County showed two males and one female under five years age in Jeremiah's household. Nancy would likely have been the daugbeen his nephew, Jeremiah (Melinda's son).
- The family was in Logan County, living next to William Lafferty and Melinda, Jeremiah's sister, in 1850. In 1860, they lived at Coal River Marshes, and were still there in 1870.

- William's family was at Coal River Marshes, Raleigh Co., W. Va., in 1860 Census, and Elizabeth, widowed, was still living there, 1870. Elizabeth's Maiden name has been given as Sawyers and Sayers.
- William's birthdate was computed from his age at death, 54 yrs, 10 mo., 2 da. He came to Fayette County in Oct 1842 from Patrick County, then to Raleigh County, West Virginia. The Wills Cemetery where he was buried is located on Rt. 3, near Arnett, West Virginia.
- Elizabeth's Maiden name was spelled Sayers on the Minister's return, Sawyers on her death record. Her birthdate was either 30 Sep or 1 Oct 1813. She was buried at Rock Creek on the homeplace, from family source, but is listed with burials in Wills Cemetery where William is buried.
3 LUCY ANN COMBS b. 11-Nov-1838 d. 17-Apr-1913 Clear Creek, Raleigh Co., WV
- In Wyoming County, 1880 Census, at Slab Fork, #3/3, Lucy lived next to her brother, Columbus COMBS. In her household was Eldridge B., age 18, b. Va. and Victoria A., age 5, b. WV. In 1900, Lucy lived with her daughter, Victoria, in Raleigh County. Victoria, born Feb 1875, was widowed, with two children, Stella Cook, b. Jul 1896 and Merritt Cook, b. Apr 1898. Lucy reported to the Census taker that she had five children, four who were still living.
- In 1910, Lucy was in the household of John W. COMBS. Only three children were now living (Clear Fork, #143/143).
- Speculation about Lucy and her children's father or fathers, as the case may have been, leads one to wonder if the father of all the children may have been the same. Latest information found in the International Genealogical Index shows Lora's father to have been one John Lafferty. In a later Census, Lucy's son, Willoughby, used the Surname Lafferty, no doubt John was also his father. Willoughby named one of his sons, John.

- Mary Ann married (2) Oct 1899, John Bradford, and I think a son and daughter of Mary Ann's married a son and daughter of John and his first wife, Agnes.
- In the 1900 Census, John was living in the household of Eldridge Sarrett, his cousin. He married Mary Ann Bradford, 24 Mar 1906, in Raleigh County. This gets a little complex. Mary Ann COMBS, daughter of William and Elizabeth COMBS and John's cousin, first married William Massey, son of William and Martha (Lafferty) Massey. Ruhama Massey, a daughter of William and Martha, married John A. Bradford, who married Mary Ann (COMBS) Massey, 5 Oct 1894. This is the Mary Ann Bradford, John married.

- Sarah was the daughter of Robert and M.M. Acord, according to the Marriage Record in Wyoming Co., W. Va. Marriage was performed by J.L. Marshall. Sarah's father, Robert, died 20 Nov 1859, at Laurel Fork, fever, age 57 yr, 13 da. He was born in Monroe County, and was son of John and Rachel Acord. His wife gave the information, but she was not named in the record (Wyoming County Deaths, 1853 - 1890).
- Of interest, Census records gave her name as Michiel and Michael. Probably an attempt to spell "Michelle." Also the surname was often "Achord."
- After Sarah's death, Columbus married a widow, Frances Underwood. Four children of Frances' first marriage were part of the household in the 1910 Census. They were, Lurie Underwood, age 14; Zada, age 13; Arthur Underwood, age 10 and Howard, age 8. Columbus and Frances had three children listed in the Census, one was missing, as Frances said she had eight children, all living.

In the 1900 Census, she reported she had been married 34 years, had eleven children with seven still living. Their grandson, Londa M. Gates, lived with them when the 1910 Census was taken.
- There was a baby born and died same day, 5 May 1871, gender not noted on transcript of birth and deaths (WPA record). There is still one child to be accounted for, according to the 1900 Census.
- In 1910, Londa M. Gates, age 9, grandson, lived with John and Susan. They had eleven children, only seven living in 1910. In the next household, Lewis T. Gates and Madonna were living, and I think Madonna was their daughter. Londa was their daughter, Hettie's son.

One of Candace's grandsons died at Guadacanal during World war II.
- Thomas united with the Church of Christ at age 23. Candace survived him by 30 years and lived an active and independant life in her own home. She was an active and tireless worker in her church, and attended services the Sunday before her death.

- The family resided at Coal River Marshes, Raleigh Co., W. Va., in 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census. In 1870, John T. had Real Property valued at $1000., Personal Property, $300.
- Nancy was living in the household with her grandson, William, in 1900.
- I am told that Nancy and John were married on horseback. This is a colorful and romantic story from the time in which they lived.
- The following is taken from an article from Beckley Post Herald, dated 26 Aug 1950: Descendants of the Sarrett family which included some of the early pioneers of Raleigh County can trace their ancestry back to a young French Nobleman who fought on the side of freedom in the American Revolution. This Nobleman bore the title, Duke of Mont Sarrett and came to America on the same ship as the Marquis Jean Paul Lafayette. Both offered their service to Gen. Washington during the Revolution, then returned to France.
- After the outbreak of the French Revolution, the Duke and small son were concealed aboard a ship and brought back to America. On arrival in America, the Duke became known as Elisha Sarrett and he settled in Virginia. He met and married Jane Jenkins.
- John T. had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. John was said to be loved and honored by all who knew him and was a loyal American. He taught his children to be industrious, frugal, law-abiding and God-fearing. He and Nancy COMBS were married on horseback. After their marriage, they moved to Arnett, W. Va.
- John's brother, Thompson Sarrett, married a Cherokee girl. His family was opposed to the marriage, but she was an excellent wife and a good mother. Thompson's children were David, Crockett, Granville, James, Emeline and William. Crockett volunteered in Union Army and served to the end of the war. He was robbed by bandits as he crossed the Cumberland on his return home after the end of the war.
- Granville was pressed into the Confederate Army and was paroled by Gen. Grant. The surname often appeared as Surratt and was spelled as such in Dr. Josiah Combs' book. The families living in Virginia still use this spelling.
- In Raleigh County, still in 1910 Census, the name was spelled both ways, however, in that area, the spelling, Sarrett, predominated. To avoid confusion, I have used Sarrett for all the descendants of John T. and Nancy (COMBS) Sarrett.

- The 1910 Census poses a puzzle. This Census says both he and his wife, Minerva A., were married twice, the present marriage for 6 years. Minerva had four children, two living, and her age was 58. Joseph had married two Minerva A.'s, this one was Minerva Gardner.
- The puzzle didn't stop with my finding the solution to the marriage for there was included in the household, Tina Ferrill, daughter-in-law, age 38, married 17 years, with one child, and John Ferrill, nephew, age 15. I can't unravel this relationship. John might really be Tina's son, then he would be a grandson, not nephew. I suspect these were relatives of Minerva Gardner.

The 1840 Grayson County Census was certified and affirmed on the 10th of October, 1840. I have no way of knowing when the actual count was taken, but if prior to August, I believe Melinda was in household of her brother, John. He reported a female between 15 and 20 years, and his wife, Penninah, was the female listed between 20 and 30 years. It may be that Melinda's son, Jeremiah, may have been in the household with his Uncle Jeremiah Combs, in 1840.
Melinda's son, Jeremiah "Jerry" Combs, was the natural son of Fielding FIPPS.
3 JEREMIAH COMBS b. Apr 1837 Grayson Co., VA d. Bef 1910 m. (1) 3-Apr-1860 Raleigh Co., WV NANCY ANN COMBS b. 22-Aug-1842 Fayette Co., WV d. 30-Dec-1881 Raleigh Co., WV m. (2) 7-Apr-1884 Raleigh Co., WV MARY CATHERINE MILLER b. Nov 1857
- Jerry was born in Grayson County, Virginia, and was the son of Fielding FIPPS. He was not in the home of his step-father, William LAFFERTY, and his mother in the 1850 Census,
Fayette Logan County. When the 1860 Census was taken, he lived in a separate household in the vicinity of his Uncles, John, William and Jeremiah Combs, at Coal River Marshes.
- He received a farm from his natural father, who had extensive land holdings in the Sand Lick Section. His father was the first permanent settler in the Sand Lick Creek area in Raleigh County. Mr. FIPPS gave farms to all ten of his children.
- Fielding FIPPS married Eleanor ELLISON (1860 Annotated Census). His children were James, Lewis, William, Eli, Elizabeth, Delilah, Mary Ann, Eliza and Pliny Fipps, and their half-brother, Jeremiah Combs.
- Jeremiah was married twice and had several children. He owned and operated the only water-powered grist mill in the area. The mill was built in 1881 by Baxter HONAKER and Van SARRETT, Jerry's cousins. The mill ceased operation when Jerry died, and the farm was sold in 1918. It was bought by James WISEMAN, who repaired and operated it until he sold out and moved to Ohio. The mill was then torn down.
- Jerry's family had an unfair amount of bad luck. Jeff fell from a railroad bridge and was killed and George was struck down by a train at Hoo Hoo near Lester. Two of his sons, Lee and Seth, died in the mine explosion at the Eccles Mine No. 5 in April 1914. I think I have found all his children unless some were born and died between Census years. Jerry married first, his cousin, 3 Nancy Combs.
