Except where otherwise noted, all Putnam Co, OH records were transcribed by Combs Researcher Kathy Rinke
Putnam County was established in 1820 from Shelby Co's "attached" unorganized territory, but not officially organized until 1834, up until which time it was attached to Wood Co. In 1848, Allen Co gained substantially from southern Putnam (See below). Putnam County is located in the northwest area of Ohio, bordering on Van Wert, Paulding, Defiance, Henry, Hancock and Allen counties. The northeastern corner of Putnam borders the southwestern corner of Wood county. Putnam county was formed from old Indian territory 1 Apr 1820, named for General Israel Putnam, a native of Massachusetts and a prominent early military man.
