Greenbrier County, VA was established in 1777-8 from northern Montgomery Co VA. In 1788-9, Kanawha Co was est. from Greenbrier. In 1790-1, Bath Co VA was est. from Greenbrier, Augusta & Botetourt Cos VA. In 1799, Monroe Co was est. from Greenbrier. In 1818, Nicholas Co was est. from Greenbrier and Kanawha Cos VA. In 1831, Fayette Co VA was est. from Greenbrier, Kanawha and Logan Cos VA. In 1863, Greenbrier became part of the newly-formed state of West Virginia. In 1871 Summers Co WV was est. from Greenbrier, Fayette and Mercer. In ca 1880-1890, Webster Co WV gained from Greenbrier & Nicholas.

Notes: The actual year of this tax list apparently unknown. The list is alphabetical by first letter of surname. The above William COMBES is unidentified; however, also on this list is a Bradley MEREDITH, a name found with the Combs & STACYS on the 1781 Montgomery Co VA Militia Company of Capt. Daniel TRIGG. Not known if same Bradley MEREDITH, but a Bradley MEREDITH is also found in the records of Henry Co VA in the 1790s. See also Zur Combs of Augusta and Shenandoah Cos VA below. MEREDITH was not on the 1782 list.
1790-1800 (Augusta VA Ct. Judgments) LUDDINGTON vs. STUART (O.S. 332; N. S. 120-Bill, 1812.) Dispute re land in Greenbriar Co, VA… Zur Combs deposes (1817) that he lived near the land 1790-1800; he came to the country in 1790, and left in 1800…. (Chalkley's Chronicles, Vol. II, p. 241)
Notes: Zur Combs was the s/o Job Combs of Shenandoah Co VA. He died in 1828 in Hamilton Co, OH.
