Kanawha County was established in 1789 from Greenbrier and Montgomery. In 1804, Mason was established from Kanawha, and in 1809, Cabell from Kanawha. In 1818, Nicholas was est. from Greenbrier and Kanawha. In 1824, Logan was established from Cabell, Giles and Kanawha. In 1831, Fayette was established from Kanawha, Greenbrier and Logan; and in 1831, Jackson was established from Kanawha, Mason and Wood. In 1836, Braxton was established from Kanawha, Lewis and Nicholas; and in 1845, Gilmer was est. from Lewis and Kanawha. In 1847, Boone was established from Cabell, Kanawha and Logan; and in 1848, Putnam was established from Cabell, Kanawha and Mason.

Notes: Nimrod COMBO [sic] was probably Nimrod Combs (alias LUTTRELL), eldest s/o John & Sarah LUTTRELL Combs, Jr. and gs/o John & Seth BULLIT Combs, Sr., of Stafford, Prince William & Fauquier Cos, VA. Nimrod m 12 Nov 1791, Fauquier Co, VA, Betsy Kenner MARKHAM, d/o James MARKHAM (1819 Mason Co, KY records). According to this census transcription, Nimrod was born 1766-1784. Based on Fauquier Co VA records, he was born 1764-1777, thus this census narrows his birth year to 1766-1777 (his father's eldest known child). He has not yet been located on any 1820-1830 census yet, but there is a Nimrod Combs on the 1840 Stafford Co, VA Census who may be him (transcription not yet read, and not checked yet under Nimrod LUTTRELL, which he may have also used since he was born before his parent's marriage.

In the 1870 Boone Co, WV census, a Levi Combs, age 30, farmer, $100. value Personal Property, born Va., Household #170/174, with wife, Melissa F., age 30; children, Cora E., age 3 and Verrilu, age 1.
