10 Feb 1816-Jun 1817 (Hardy Co VA WB2:291) Will of Francis Ignatius Coomes. Recorded June 1817, Hardy County WV.

Know all to whom these presents may come greeting that I Francis I. Combs of Hardy County and State of Virginia being sick and weak of body tho of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for his mercies therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all once to die I do make and ordain this my last will & testament and as attaching such worldly estate where with it pleased god to bless me with in this life I give and devise and dispose of the same in manner and form following to wit.

Item 1, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Elizabeth Bean one Shilling and no more of my estate.

Item 2, I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Drusilla Jarboe one Shilling and no more of my estate.

Item 3, I give and bequeath to my three sons namely, Francis I. Combs, Henry Combs, & Joshua Combs each one Shilling and no more of my estate.

Item 4, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Nancy Combs the farm on which I now live together with a piece of ground I got of Thomas McGill in a swap, also one track of land adjoining the home place on Hunting Ridge containing one hundred and thirty two acres.

Item 5, I give and bequeath to my wife Nancy all my personal estate to have and to hold for the rest of her natural life and then to be divided equally between (“her” scratched out) our children namely Trecy, Cassa, Letty, Pyos, Christene, Charles & Peter Combs and the one unborn.

Item 6, I wish all my just debts to be paid by my wife Nancy.

Item 7, I give and bequeath to the Catholic Church one acre and quarter of ground for a burying place bounded by two white Pines & a white Oak & forming a great A thus

Item 8, I wish to have sold one track of land on the Spring Lick Ridge for the use of the family and I appoint and ordain James Conms (?) to sell same and to be allowed two Shillings in the pound for his services. As witness my hand & seal this tenth day of February eighteen hundred & sixteen.

Francis [his x mark] I. Comes. Witness Present Henry M. Davis, John Thorp, Maria [her x mark] Levre.

On the back side of will: Item 9, I constitute and ordain Annafnan Tucker and my wife Nancy Executors and setting aside all other wills and bequest here to fore made.

At a court held for Hardy County the 10th day of June 1817 this last will and testament of Francis I. Coomes (sic) dec. was presented in court, proved by the oaths of Henry M. Davis and John Thorp two of the witnesses and ordered to be recorded. Teste Ed Williams, Clk.

(Transcribed by Combs Researcher Joseph Lewis)

Joe Lewis Notes: The above Francis Ignatius COOMES (son of Thomas and Elizabeth WHARTON Coomes of Charles County MD) married 1st Cassandra CULVER, daughter of Henry CULVER, Jr. of Prince George's Co, MD, and their children were Francis Ignatius Jr, Joshua, Henry, Drusilla (m Benedict JARBOE) and Elizabeth (m James BEAN). The rest of his children are from his second wife Nancy. His sons, Francis Ignatius (a.k.a. Ignatius), Joshua and Henry COOMES had all removed to Nelson Co KY by 1812 (Tax Lists) and on to Breckenridge Co KY by 1813-1814.

The “Descendants of James Claypool (b1701)” erroneously reports: “Nancy CLAYPOOL was born Sept. 15, 1788. She was married twice, first to Jacob SINNATE and second to Francis Combs, son of Thomas and Martha Combs [presumably of Hampshire Co VA]. Children of 2nd marriage were: Pius, Peter, John Wm. and Charles.”

  1. Francis Ignatius was not the s/o either Thomas & Martha Combs of Hampshire VA or Thomas & Martha of Monmouth NJ (See Shenandoah VA) as is proven by those records.
  2. Nancy CLAYPOOL was m 13 Apr 1807 Hardy Co. W. VA, Jacob SINNETT, by Ferdinard LAIR (Hardy VA marriage records, Combs Researcher Joe Lewis) The 9 Sep 1823 (dated) will of John CLAYPOOL names daughter “Nancy SINNATE” (indicating that Nancy is still married to Jacob in 1823 (Descendants of James Claypool…) The children listed above as children of Nancy CLAYPOOL and Francis Combs have the same names as the male children of Francis Ignatius Combs and his wife Nancy as listed in his will dated 1817, Hardy Co. W. Va, except for John Wm. (the one unborn?) From the same source (census records), the children were born as follows, Pius b.c1809, Peter b.c1811, Charles b. ca 1812, John William (1817)?. Clearly, if Nancy m Jacob SINNATE in 1807 and was still surnamed SINNATE in 1823, she did not marry Francis Ignatius Combs of Hardy Co VA; thus the children attributed to her are incorrect. Question: Is it possible that Nancy instead married Francis Combs of Hampshire Co VA (s/o Thomas & Martha), with someone having added children of Francis of Hardy instead?

1820? Hardy Co VA Marriage Records: Nancy COOMES & Henry FRAVELL, Return by Benedict REYNOLDS.

(Combs Researcher Joe Lewis who asks: Could this be the widow of Francis Ignatius Combs, d 1817?)

Notes: Given that Nancy can be a nickname for Ann, is it possible that the above Ann FRAVELL was the widow of (1) Francis Ignatius Combs, Sr. and (2) Henry FRAVELL? Both these census records are needed in order to try to determine if the widow and/or younger children of Francis Ignatius, Sr. are in these households.
