Our interest in the JETER/JEETER families begins with the 1737 Caroline Co VA record whereby William JETER sues Mason Combs, Sr. - apparently over 200 acres of land on Peumans End Run of Essex>Caroline VA which Mason had inherited from his father, John Combs, d Richmond VA 1716/7, and which he (Mason Combs) had sold to Grace BUTLER in 1734 (See Caroline Co VA)

Mason Combs, Sr. is never found with a JETER again, but interestingly enough, there appears to have been a Jeters/Combs migration from Essex/Caroline to Amelia to Lunenburg Cos VA and later to Edgefield SC via the same JETER family.

Among the children of John & Elizabeth VAUGHAN Jeter were Thomas who d in 1765 in Amelia Co VA, and William who d in 1802 in Edgefield SC, after having passed through both Amelia & Lunenburg Cos VA. Although the JETERS are not found in records with Combs in Amelia Co, they are together later in Lunenburg Co where they appear as neighbors based on processions of 1763.

The following Jeter etc. records were compiled by Cammock-Stern-Vaughn Researcher Mary Gregg, to whom we offer our special thanks:

William JETER married Margaret VAUGHAN, daughter of Cornelius and Elizabeth VAUGHAN of Spotsylvania County, Virginia. William and Margaret JETER lived in Amelia County, Virginia, for a time, and it probably was there that their daughter, Parthenia, married Craddock VAUGHAN. No evidence suggests that Craddock VAUGHAN was a relative of Margaret (VAUGHAN) Jeter. So far as is known, Cornelius VAUGHAN, Margaret's father, was from the King and Queen County/Spotsylvania County area of Virginia, while Craddock VAUGHAN'S roots probably were in Prince George County and Amelia County, and there does not seem to have been any connection between the King and Queen County VAUGHANS and the Prince George County VAUGHANS.

Before migrating to Edgefield Dist, South Carolina, William and Margaret JETER lived in Lunenburg County, Virginia. (See Craddock VAUGHAN, Moses ESTES (purchased land of George Combs) & William JETERS of Lunenburg Co VA records).

In The Heritage of Union County [South Carolina] it is stated that William JETER died in Edgefield in 1797 and that Margaret, his wife, died November 14, 1775. But if that is correct, did he, then, remarry to a second woman also named Margaret? For his wife, Margaret, is definitely named as a legatee in his will
