The City of Oxford is incorporated, a university and a city, with separate jurisdiction, although locally in the Hundred of Wootton, lies on the Thames River, directly across from the Berkshire border with the closest known "Combs Parishes of Berks" being: Abingdon (abt 5 mi. distant), Kingston Bagpuize and Milton (each less than 9 miles distant). The nearest known "Oxfordshire County Combs Parishes" are: Littlemore (less than three miles southeast - see Cuddesdon), Sandford on Thames (abt 3 miles southeast) and Yarnton (about 4-1/2 miles northwest). Until 1974, the Thames River was the dividing line between Oxfordshire and Berks. Of the known Combs &c. parishes, the only ones affected so far by the 1974 change of boundary are North and South Hinksey and Abingdon (now in Oxfordshire, but formerly in Berks, which is also where they are located for research purposes as that was the "county of record").

Also for research purposes, University records, and records of those who resided at the University, have been segregated from those of the City.

City of Oxfordshire Locations*

Note: Does not include all parishes, etc., but for the most part, only those in which Archdales, Combs and associated families have been found.

*Each early parish church had a "patron," and in the City of Oxford, the patrons were often one of the University's colleges as noted above.
