Johnson County in the center of the state, was established in 1823 from the Delaware New Purchase. Descendant Counties: None.
Although several references are made by various Eastern KY Combs in the Dickey Diary Interviews to families moving to Indiana (without specifying a county), there is no evidence they were in Johnson. Despite the specific reference made in Josiah H. Combs' The Combes Genealogy… to Johnson County when referring to East Kentucky Combs, it appears that most East Kentucky Combs were in either Greene or Jackson Cos.
The James Kendall Logan Manuscript of 1943 includes mention of Johnson Co IN Combs, but the line he discusses are not those of East KY, but of Mercer and Woodford Counties, and believed by Kendall to have been descendants of Capt. Joseph COMBS II of Loudoun Co VA. The sole basis for Dr. Combs' conclusion seems to have been that there was a Harrison COMS in this county, and even Kendall was only hypothesizing. Given that Capt. Joseph COMBS II appears to have married a HARRISON, Dr. Combs' theories are moot. Mr. Kendall's are still being researched… particularly since the Combs of Johnson Co, IN may have been descended, not from the Combs of Loudoun Co, VA, but from those of Middlesex, NJ (See below and see Mercer Co, KY).

Notes: According to the James Kendall manuscript, Joseph Allen [source?] Combs, b 30 Aug 1797, KY, was the s/o Claytor & Jael RANSDELL Combs who m 9 Aug 1796, Mercer Co, KY, Stephen Combs, Bondsman. Kendall believed that Claytor was the s/o Stephen whom he identified as Stephen & Barbara ALLEN Combs of Loudoun Co, VA, s/o Joseph Combs II). Claytor Combs was on the 1800 Mercer Co, KY tax list, but apparently deceased by 28 Dec 1805 (1803 per Kendall), when his widow, "Jaly" Combs, m in Mercer, Jacob VORIS [VOORHIS, etc.]. Joseph A. Combs served in George McAFEE'S Mercer Co, KY Militia Company in the War of 1812 (pension), and fought in the Battle of New Orleans as a private under Col. Joseph A. is listed on the 1830 Woodford Co, KY Census, but was in Johnson County by 1835 (per above land records).
