14 Aug 1823 Elijah BREEDEN of Monroe Co IN sold land in Shelby Co KY (Shelby Co KY DBT:135). Elijah is not the same who m 3 Feb 1808, Shelby Co, KY, Patty Combs, d/o Andrew Combs, but probably closely related.
Notes: Elijah not found on 1830 Monroe Co IN Census.

Bird Comnes or Camus
1 m 15-20; 1 m 40-50; 2 f 15-20; 1 f 30-40
SE Note: The name was difficult to decipher and probably misspelled by the census taker; however, the entry appears to be for Bird Combs, formerly of Surry Co, NC. Bird Combs is not in the 1830 Surry Co, NC census. His daughter Sarah Combs marries Jesse EAST the following year (1831) in Monroe Co. Joel SEXTON, Alexander CARMIKEL and Archd CARMIKEL are listed with Bird Combs on the same page of this census. The CARMICHAEL family was also from Surry Co. NC.
This census record indicates that Bird and his wife (name unknown and no marriage record as yet located) came to Monroe County with 1 male (b. 1810-1815) and two daughters (b. 1810-1815). It is probable that Martin Bird (b. c1810/11 in North Carolina) who marries Mary FODRILL [or FOLLOWELL] in 1831 in Monroe is the extra male in Bird's 1830 household. Could Martin have been a son of Bird Combs? Per Martin's descendant Chris Combs, he was named Martin Byrd Combs. Since Bird Combs appears to have been born between 1789-1790, he was old enough to have a son born by 1810. Martin Combs is also involved in the purchase of land belonging to Bird Combs per probate records (1842). Martin Combs married secondly Permilia SEXTON in 1836. Martin is in Lawrence Co, IN, by 1850 and in Nodaway Co, MO by 1870.
Relative (possible brother?) Charles Combs of Surry Co, NC, migrates to Monroe Co. by 1837 per land records.
It is believed Bird and Charles are possibly the sons of a William (d. 1800) and Sarah Combs of Surry Co, NC. The Carmichael and East families also migrated from Surry Co, NC to Monroe Co. as did one Peter GRAVES.

Note: Charles Combs m (1) 28 Dec 1819, Surry Co NC, Abigail REAVIS; m (2) Oct 1858 Green Co IN, Anna (her 1st husband was a McLAUGHLIN, and she was his second wife). He died testate 28 Feb 1866, Monroe Co, IN; had served in George L. DAVIDSON'S NC Militia (Combs &c. of War of 1812, Pension File, WC-34989). See also (1) 1768 Rowan Co NC tax list of John BREVARD (George DAVIDSON tithed James Combs); and (2) Thomas Hicks & Keziah HAYS Combs. Not known how Silas and Pleasant could both have been 14 and yet born in separate states - unless 1836 was the year that Charles came to Indiana. (See 1850 Census and his 1866 Monroe Co IN will below). Martin Combs have been identified. Martin Combs was in Lawrence Co IN by 1850. Henry FRITTS is listed in Richland Twp of the 1850 Madison Co AR Census. He came to IN from Lee Co VA. His son, Martin FRITTS, m a granddaughter of Martin & Sarah Combs Johnson of that county.
1842 Bird Combs Probate -- Mary A. EAST defined as heir of Bird Combs and identified as the minor daughter of Jesse EAST [married Sarah Combs in 1831]. Other names in the probate records were Winny Combs and Martin Combs. Awaiting more detailed probate information.
