The following list is of published Combs &c. Family Histories. Many are out of print, but may be available via the Library of Congress. Others are coming soon to our Combs &c. Research Site. See Also our Combs Bibliography, which includes numerous additional published sources used by the Combs &c. Research Group, including Combs-Associated Family Histories.
Not that we're “prejudiced”, but since we have several published authors on our Combs Research List, we're starting with those:
TITLE: John Holcombe's Odyssey, 1797-1876, A Story of a Nineteenth Century American Pioneer. Author & Publisher: Combs Researcher Herbert G. Holcomb, e-mail: herbh@ipa.net, 548 Gray Ave, Fayetteville, AR. Year: 1999. Price: $22.50 (includes shipping). Subject: John HOLCOMBE (s/o Jeremiah & Mary (MERCER) Holcombe), b 10 Dec 1797, Old 96th District, SC (present-day Union Co); d 1876, Washington Co, AR; m 24 Jul 1823, Gibson Co, IN (lic. dated 22 Jul), Dorothy WOOLBANKS (aka WILBANKS), d/o Reuben & Jane Combs Woolbanks (13 Mar 1807, Warren Co, KY marriage bond), b 15 Jan 1808, KY, d 17 Feb 1874, Washington Co, AR. Jane Combs Woolbanks is thought to have been the d/o Bennett & Dorothy “Dolly” Combs of Pendleton SC; Warren and Butler Cos, KY; Gibson Co, IN and Sangamon Co, IL (where Dorothy d in 1838).
Combs Research Review: This book is both well-researched and well-written. Herbert researched not only the records, but also the times, including historical data that adds perspective to both actual lifestyles and migration patterns. Moreover, the book is “right up Combs Alley” in that Holcombe-Associated Families such as the Combs, Duffs and Putmans (among many) are as much a part of his manuscript as the Holcombes themselves. Best of all, this book tells a story which is interesting from start to finish, by which time this reader felt like she had personally known everyone in the book.
TITLE: The Kendall Family History, the Life, Ancestors & Descendants of Abraham Kendall & “Millie” Ellen Gilmore, privately printed in 1989, by Combs Researcher Denise K. Mortorff, includes the descendants of William and Elizabeth Combs Kendall of Richmond, Westmoreland and Stafford Cos VA.
Combs Research Review: This is an excellent book, wonderfully written, and still in print. The quality of Denise's research speaks for itself -- on our Combs Research List and our Combs &c. Research pages, particularly our English Combs Counties) To obtain a copy, email Denise at n2rpast@sbcglobal.net for details.
TITLE: The Stacy Journal, a multi-volume set authored by our own Combs Researcher Barbara Stacy Mathews, including the Descendants of Simon Stacy of Essex, EN, Stafford Co VA, Charles MD, and York Co VA (at least half of whom married Combs <g>)
Combs Research Review: The Stacy Journals are excellent, both well-researched and well-written, and still in print. For more details, visit Barbara's Stacy Families, which includes far more than just Stacy's (You'll find uploaded copies of original Combs documents as well).
TITLE: The Lives and Letters of the Combs Family, by Combs Researcher Ann Combs Krahn, is a wonderful, well-researched book about Thomas and Keziah HAYS Combs, and their descendants, including both photographs and copies of original letters.
Combs Research Review: This book is a wonderful, well-researched book without which, we wouldn't have our own special report on the Thomas and Keziah HAYS Combs Family of Wilkes Co, NC and Hancock Co, IN (among others). It is still in print, and we highly recommend it. Researchers wishing more details can email Ann at pickles@softfarm.com, or write directly to: Ann Combs Krahn, 601 First Avenue, Mendota, IL 61342-2339.
Special Note: Other than the above four authors, the Combs &c. Research Group does not “actively advertise” on behalf of any “for-profit” book sales (Not that any of them claim to have ever made a profit - all are much too giving for that). Our Combs Cousins Denise, Barbara, Ann and Herbert are very much exceptions to our policy - All four have given far too much to our research efforts for us not to be Exceedingly Proud that we can count them among us.
TITLE: Combes: A Study in Comparative Philology and Genealogy, by the late Josiah Henry Combs (1886-1960), privately published ca1976 by his nephew, the “Grand” Norris K. Combs of Pensacola, Florida, includes some miscellaneous early Combs of England and the Colonies, primarily focuses on the Combs of East Kentucky, particularly those believed to have been descendants of Archdale Combs of Old Rappa Co VA; but also includes a significant amount of data on the lines of Joseph Combs of Stafford Co VA.
This book has long been out of print; however, that Grand Man Norris Combs has given permission to the Combs &c. Research Group to publish the entire book to our Combs &c. website! The book is now on-line (click the link), scanned, translated to text and proofed, and including an index -- by a special team of Combs &c. Researchers
TITLE: The Memoirs of the Archdales, Henry Blackwood Archdale, privately published 1925, covers numerous of the descendants of John and Ann ARCHDALE of Staffordshire, England, including John and Margaret ARCHDALE Combs of London.
Note: This book, too, is long out of print; and the Combs &c. Research Group is in the process of publishing this book to our web site (within the next few months). In the meantime, look-ups are available by writing to Webmaster.
