Greenville, located in northwestern South Carolina was established in 1784-6 from part of the old Cherokee lands deeded to SC in 1777. In its early years, Greenville was a stronghold for Tories (British Loyalists), lead by Richard PEARIS who later settled in the Bahamas (a British holding). Greenville and neighboring Pendleton Cos SC were both made part of the Washington District in 1798. Dede Aday MacDonald, Coordinator of the Greenville SC GenWeb, reports that Greenville's northern border was the North Carolina state line, and that most early settlers lived in the northern part of the country, adding: "Among the prominent early settlers of the County and Village were the following: Baylis Earle, Col. Jno B. Earle, Gen. John Earle, Maj. GOWEN, Judge Pendleton, Judge Jas Harrison, Hon. Elias Earle, Hon. Saml Earle, Col. Harry Wood, John FOSTER, Philemon Bradford, Judge Edwards, Gen. Blassingame, Capt Jeremiah CLEVELAND, Vardry McBEE, Gov. B.F. Perry, Gov. J. Alston, Gov. Middleton, Chance W. Thompson, Hon Joel R. Poinsett, Judge Gantt, Prof. Dickson, Drl. Wm. Butler, Maj Thos Lowndes, Col. Jno Thomas, John Wickliff, Robt Maxwell, Jno Kilgore, Wm. Young, Squire Salmon, Wm. Goodlett, Maj. Benson, Col. Thurston, Saml. Townes, Col. G. Walker, Capt. Robt Anderson, Col. Wm. Toney."

The earliest Combs in Greenville has not yet been identified, but the second earliest was undoubtedly Tory John Combs of Surry Co NC, later found in Washington Co TN

Note: Thomas Combs has not been identified, and could probably have lived anywhere in the state.

20 Sep 1787 (Greenville Co., S. C. DB A:213-214) Power of Attorney. Sept. 20, 1787. I, John Combs of Washington Co., N. C. [now East TN], appoint my trusty and well beloved friend John MOLIN of Greenville Co., S. C., Gent., my true and lawful attorney, and in my name to sell, etc., a tract of land lying on Beaverdam Creek on the W. side of the N. fork of Saluda River, joining the lands of William GUDLOW, sd. land being surveyed by James SEABORN for sd. John Combs, containing 400 acres. s/John Combs. Wit: Allen GOWEN, John GOWEN. Rec. Feb. 20, 1788 (Some South Carolina County Records, Vol. 2. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Editor)

06 Aug 1789 (Washington TN Deed Book 3, pp. 151-3) 8/6/1789. John CALLIHAM-(& CALAHAM & CALLAHAM) of Greenville County, SC, his NC grant of 10 Nov. 1784 to Samuel DENTON; 150 acres on the south side of Nob Creek. CONS: 100 lbs. SIG: John CALLAHAM. Wit: Charles DUNCAN, John Combs. (Some South Carolina County Records, Vol. 2. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Editor)

Notes: In Surry Co NC, John GOIN [sic] is identified as the brother-in-law of William RIDGE, Sr., h/o Winnifred Combs (d/o Mason Combs, Sr.), and associate of both Combs & Nicholas Combs. The Combs, GOIN and RIDGE Families of Surry Co NC were all active Tories (loyal to the British) and probably removed to Greenville after 1780 when William RIDGE, Sr. was killed at the Battle of Hanging Rock (SC). In Washington TN he is found with the CALLAHAM and DUNCAN Families (also from Surry NC, and also in Greenville SC). Question: How and when did John Combs come to acquire this land, and who were his neighbors? Although there were no Combs on the 1790 Greenville SC census, it does provide add'l data.

(1790 Greenville SC Census - Warning 268k file, slow to load)

24 Jun 1799 (Pendleton SC DB E:14-15) June 24, 1799. I, Bennett Combs of Greenville Dist., S. C., for $600, sold to Jacob LIGHT of Pendleton Co., 170 acs. on 12 Mile River, b/b Wm. MURPHREE, Caleb BOYD, Geo. THOMPSON, Saml. EARLE. Wit; Jas. JETT, Abin (X) LIGHT. Dolley (+) Combs, wife of Bennett Combs, released dower to John WILSON, J. P., Mar. 31, 1799 (marked through) 1800. Abin LIGHT made oath to Henry BURCH, J. P., June 24, 1799. Rec. June 24, 1799. (Pendleton District, South Carolina, Deeds, 1790-1806. Betty Willie)

Notes: Bennett Combs was of Pendleton SC prior to the date of this record, and was also on the Pendleton SC 1800 Census. Both Pendleton and Greenville SC were in Washington District. See Also Tory Henry BURCH of Surry NC. and LIGHTS on 1788 Sullivan TN Militia List.

Important! There was significant movement between Spartanburg and Greenville Co (which lay on the North Carolina line with Pendleton to the west and Spartanburg to the east. In fact, Joel CALLAHAM is on the 1790 census, and John DUNCAN is found in that county in a record with John HAMMETT (h/o Sarah UNDERWOOD).
