Spartanburg County was established in 1785 from the Old 96th District. To its north was the state of North Carolina, to its east was Greenville SC.
Background: Although this is a Combs &c. Report, and emphasis should on Combs and Combs-Associated Families, in this case, it may be somewhat "weighted" toward the Cannon-Hammett-Mason-Underwood Families who also came to Spartanburg SC from Surry Co, NC, but before that were most recently from Culpeper Co VA and, moving back in time: Fauquier > Prince William > Stafford > Richmond Cos, VA where the Combs, Hammetts, Masons and Underwoods are found living adjacent to each other. Same ones? Who knows? Not us. Not yet. (See Also Hammett Families. See Also Underwood Families. See Also Combs Counties)

William HASKINS had m Elizabeth HAMMETT, d/o John & Sarah UNDERWOOD Hammett of Richmond, Stafford, Prince William, Fauquier, and Culpeper VA to Surry NC. Also note that (1) HAMMETTS came to SC by way of Surry NC; (2) some of the HAMMETTS were Tories; (3) the HAMMETTS moved back and forth between Greenville and Spartanburg, and some moved on to Wilkes Co GA early; (4) William HAMMETT I of Richmond VA lived adj. or verrrry near to William Combs, brother of John Combs who was father of Mason Combs, Sr. of Stafford and Surry NC. See Also Duncan Families as well as references to moves between Surry Co, NC and Pacolet river in the RW pension file of Nicholas Combs, Sr. of Surry Co, NC and Perry Co, KY.
