22 Feb 1808 (Hampshire Co VA Marriages) Combs, David & Jane ROGERS (War of 1812, WC-5281, SC7503)

Notes: According to the Harrison Co IN biography of his son, Thomas W., David Combs was the s/o “Adam Combs, a revolutionary soldier who served with distinction during the war, in LEE'S division of WASHINGTON'S army,” and Jane the d/o Revolutionary Soldier Thomas ROGERS and wife, Sarah. Unfortunately, no Adam Combs is found in the records of Hampshire Co, VA, nor, in fact, any Adam Combs in early VA records at all. David may have been the David Combs of the 1810 Hampshire Co, VA Census, and according to his War of 1812 pension file, he served in William NEILY'S Virginia Militia (ca 1814). The pension file also indicates he lived in Clark Co, IN (where he has not yet been located), and he is not found again until 1830 in Harrison Co, IN where he died 29 Oct 1871.

1823 Romney Academy, Hampshire Co, VA. Student: John G. Combs. “Romney Academy” … located behind the courthouse … one of the oldest inhabitants of the county, John G. Combs, remembered attending school there as early as 1823, at which time he was 10 years old.”

(Abstracted by Combs Researcher Matt Combs from the History of Hampshire County, WV by Hu Maxwell and H.L. Swisher, reprinted 1972, originally printed 1897, p. 297. Note: All newspaper excerpts provided by Combs Researcher Matt Combs)

Notes: This book lists 2 instances of apparent interviews with a John G. Combs, the second identifying John G. as a “newspaperman” in 1857. No John G. Combs has been found in the records of Hampshire Co VA. Instead, he was John J. [sic] Combs, a printer, born 26 Feb 1813 in Virginia, d 10 Jul 1900, Hampshire Co VA; m 1838, Hampshire Co, VA, Susan CRAWFORD (marriage also recorded in Allegany Co, MD, entered as “Jr.”) with early connections to both the Intelligencer and the Argus newspapers (See 1857 Hampshire Co VA re John G. Combs, newspaperman, Argus) Combs Researcher Matt Combs verified this at the Romney, Hampshire Co, WV library where he discovered a microfilm of the The Virginia Argus and Hampshire Advertiser (newspaper), whose masthead lists the editors as Samuel R. SMITH and John J. Combs. According to the obituary of his son, Theodore Sutton Combs, b 1844 in Romney, “Major [Theodore Sutton] Combs' father, J. J. Combs, at the time of his death in Romney, was the oldest printer in the United States, having learned the trade from his father [unnamed], who was at one time an employee of Benjamin FRANKLIN.” (The Herald-Dispatch, Wednesday Morning, July 22, 1931). An oral family tradition is that John J. Combs was the s/o a William Henry Harrison Combs of Fauquier Co, VA (no more info and no William located in Fauquier). Given that John J. was a student in Romney, is it likely that he was somehow kin to the Joseph Combs of 1820 and 1830, listed in Romney in the latter record with two males b 1810-1815? Also note that Benjamin FRANKLIN d in 1790, a resident of Philadelphia PA. See also William H. Combs of 1833 in Frederick Co, MD and William H. Combs of 1840+ Jackson Co, VA (WV), a possible brother of John Joseph Combs, Jr.

More questions: Did Romney Academy include students who boarded? What grades/ages were taught at Romney? (When might John Joseph have been expected to have left school to begin his apprenticeship with his father?)

WHITE C-C.]

Hannah C. Friedlander Notes: Shortly after the death of Thomas, Martha sold Jonas Combs 205 acres of land on Lick Run. The deed was recorded on February 28, 1792. This was part of the land Thomas purchased in 1785. It is apparent that there was some misunderstanding between Jonas and the other heirs, even though Martha had given him a deed to the land. Thus in 1826, Jonas took the other heirs to court in order to obtain a clear title. Finally it was settled, he paying the commissioner $1.00. Jonas received title to 226 ½ acres of land. It is not known if the $1.00 is all Jonas had to pay, or if he had to pay a given amount to each of the others.

10 Apr 1837 Chancery BK #1: p.267 (Extracted by Dale Combs from Hampshire County Records, VA/WVA, 1816-1923, Vicki B. Horton, 1994, p. 42 {Abstract}) David [sic] Combs in his own right and William NAYLOR as administrator of David Combs, Francis Combs and Thomas Combs dec'd. Plaintiffs against Jessee MONROE Curator of Joseph ASBURY dec'd and Jesse MONROE as administrator de bonis non of Thomas Combs dec'd and Jonathan Combs, Mary WHITE and John Combs and John VANCE adm'r of Jonas Combs dec'd .. last will and testament of said Thomas Combs the elder dec'd when there was actually only eight viz, David, Daniel, Francis, Thomas, Moses, John, Jonathan, and Mary WHITE, Jonas the ninth child being excluded by the will.

Hannah Combs Friedlander Notes: Thomas' estate would not have been settled until John, the youngest son (b 1781-1791), was of legal age (1802-1812), and then only after the death of Thomas' widow, Martha. However, court records indicate that the children fought over terms of the will for years. It was finally settled in 1837, forty-six years after Thomas' death. Three, and possibly four of the children, were dead by then, and most of the others had moved out of the state. My interpretation is that the first mention of David is a mistake, that it should have been Daniel, since David was long since dead (Nelson Co, KY in 1801), which is why William NAYLOR is his administrator, and administrator also for Francis and Thomas, deceased. A few appropriate commas in here would help a lot! Jonas had d in 1832 (see above) with John VANCE as his administrator. Apparently Jonathan, John, and Mary (Combs) White are still among the living. No mention of Moses in any of these cases.

08 Sep 1838 Hampshire Co VA Marriages. John J. Combs & Susan B. [sic] CRAWFORD (Hampshire County Marriages of the 1800's, Vicki B. Horton, 1994, Matt Combs' Combs of Hampshire Co VA)

Notes: John J. COMBS is listed on the 1840 Hampshire Co VA Census. Rev. SHAW was a traveling (itinerant) preacher and the marriage was apparently returned in Hampshire.

Matt Combs Note: John J. Combs… …did marry Susan Melvina CRAWFORD in Allegany County, MD.… …See the following from the Romney, VA (now WV) newspaper. There should be no reference to Rev. Shaw regarding this marriage. The original Allegany County Courthouse records from this era were destroyed by fire but were “reconstructed” at some time. I have personally seen the reconstructed records. Romney, VA is approximately 30 miles directly south from Cumberland, MD. The North Branch refers to the North Branch of the Potomac River. At that time, and to the present day, it is not uncommon for people from neighboring states VA, WV, PA to come to Maryland to marry. I was stopped many times on the street as a young child, asked for directions to the courthouse from lost young couples. I believe the no waiting period for a marriage license and no blood test requirements facilitated the marriages.

“Married: On Saturday evening last on the North Branch, in MD, by the Rev. Mr. BRENT, Mr. John J. COMBS to Miss Susan B. CRAWFORD, daughter of Mr. Thomas B. CRAWFORD of this place.”

17 Oct 1838 Hampshire Co VA Marriages. James Combs & Susan CORBIN

SE Note: James Anison Combs (1818-1902) and his wife Susan(a)h CORBIN are found in the 1850 Taylor Co census, the 1870 Wood Co, WVA census, and the 1880 Doddridge Co, WVA census. James A Combs, widowed, is found living with his son James B in the 1900 Pleasants Co, WVA census. Five children have been documented by birth, marriage, and death records in these counties: James, John, Martha, Annie, and Mathew. The deaths of both James A (d 1902) and his son James B (d 1929) are recorded in Pleasants Co. See records for these counties for complete information. Note one William CORBIN witnessed the 1791 Hampshire Co will of Thomas Combs. James was always consistent in census records that he was born in Virginia. James may be the same as James Jr. of the 1842 land record.

(Abstracted by Combs Researcher Matt Combs from the History of Hampshire County, WV by Hu Maxwell and H.L. Swisher, reprinted 1972, originally printed 1897.)

John J. [sic] Combs' Jul 1900 obituary in The Hampshire Review refers only to his 60 years in the office of the South Branch Intelligencer (ca 1834-1894); however, an article appeared in the 29 Apr 1892 edition of the Intelligencer which refers to the Argus: “Your reference to the age of Mr. John J. Combs carried one of your readers back to boyhood days - to '46-'53 - to the old Court House (occupied by the Intelligencer) - to the hurry and excitement Saturdays getting ready to “go fishing with 'Dody'”. Whether Mr. Combs was an original fixture of the Intelligencer, I am not prepared positively to say. That (with the exception of a short arrangement with the Argus) he has been 'there or thereabout', I believe, for at least 45 years…” Another article referred to John J. Combs having done the “first job of printing for Chas. Broadway ROUSS, the New York millionaire merchant, ever ordered.” (The Hampshire Review, 18 July 1900) See 1823 Hampshire Co Notes for documentation that John G. was actually John J.

19 July 1872 South Branch Intelligencer, Hampshire Co, WV. Married - At the residence of Mr. J.D. MERRYMAN in Cumberland [Allegany Co], MD, on the evening of the 16th instant, by the Rev. Henry NICE, Mr. George T. GOSORN to Miss Sallie M. Combs, daughter of Mr. John J. Combs -- all of this place.

04 Oct 1872 South Branch Intelligencer, Hampshire Co, WV.

DIED - At the dawn of day on Thursday morning, the 26th of September, 1872, in this place, Mrs. Susan Melvina Combs, wife of Mr. John J. Combs, and daughter of the late Thos. B. CRAWFORD, in the 57th year of her age, after a short illness, which she bore with christian resignation to the will of God. She was the mother of 13 children, 7 of whom preceeded her to the grave. As a wife she was kind and affectionate -- as a mother devoted to her children -- as a neighbor and friend, warm hearted and generous. In the days of her youth she gave her heart to God and connected herself to the Methodist Church. She has gone, we trust, from the Church militant to the Church triumphant. May her children imitate her example. Her remains were interred in Indian Mound Cemetary on Friday evening -- funeral services by Rev. James HIGGINS, assisted by Rev. G.W. FINLEY.

Excerpted by Combs Researcher Matt Combs from Pioneers of the Capon Valley by PUGH. pp. 62-63 In an article about Postmasters in Hampshire County:

Edgar Combs had bought out the ROGERS brothers, he having married Sallie ROGERS …”

He and Mr. Combs, both fine business people, as well as the ROGERS brothers, have done much to build up this beautiful village and the Brethren Church. Mr. Combs has been officially connected with the schools and Sunday schools.

Edgar's father was Philip Combs; his mother, Malinda WOLFORD, sister of Lora Grapes BERRY. His grandfather was Payton Combs, born 1820, died 1899; his grandmother, Rebecca Combs, born 1823, died 1896. His great grandfather, James Combs, born 1776, died 1850, and his great grandmother, Annie Combs, born 1785, died 1880. They were from Scotland and settled at the foot of Stony Mountain on Little Capon, this county.

Notes: Although the above states that James and Ann Combs were from Scotland, Ann's 1850-1870 census enumerations list her as born in VA as does the 1880 Census Mortality Schedule. Her Death Record states she was born in Hampshire Co, VA, and the 1880 census record of her son, Peyton, lists both his parents as born in VA.
