Introduction [Part 2] (pp. xvii-xxix)

Page xvii. 1. Marquis CALMES m Elizabeth, d/o John and Seth BULLIT Combs, Sr., and aunt of General Leslie COMBS (s/o Benjamin & Sarah RICHARDSON Combs and gs/o John & Seth BULLIT Combs). Marquis' sister, Izabella [Isabella] CALMES, is thought to have been the same who m William RICHARDSON, father of Sarah RICHARDSON Combs (not documented). See the 1794 Shenandoah Co, VA will of Isabella CALMES Richardson for documentation that she was the mother of Sarah RICHARDSON Combs.

Page xvii. 2. At least some of the early Jeremiah COMBS of East Kentucky and East Tennessee, all born in the 1780s, were probably named, not after the Rev. Jeremiah LAMBERT, but instead after the Tory Jeremiah COMBS of Surry Co, NC (who may himself have been named after Jeremiah LAMBERT). Tory Jerry is not found in later records, and it may have been his death that caused his relatives to confer his given name on their offspring (See Early Jeremiah Combs of the Southern Frontier).

Page xviv. 4. Several references appear in this manuscript in regard to the marriage location of Elijah "8" COMBS Sr. to Sarah ROARK, d/o RW Michael and Letitia GRIGSBY Roark. In this instance, the marriage is said to have taken place in Montgomery Co, VA; and on p. 43, in that part of Montgomery County which later became Roanoke County. No marriage record has ever been located for Elijah and Sarah, but their marriage presumably took place shortly before 1798 when their eldest known child, Jesse COMBS, Sr., was born in Tennessee (Perry Co, KY Records). The ROARK family and Nicholas "8" and Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr. were all in Rockingham Co, VA in 1784, and Nancy GRIGSBY Combs affianced in 1839 in Perry Co, KY that she was at the (pre-1768) wedding of Michael and Letitia (location not stated). So far as is known thus far, no relationship existed between the Roarks of Southwest Virginia (massacred) and the Roarks of Rockingham.

Page xxi. 7. Seeking the referenced North Carolina Revolutionary War record to a Henry COMBS. Other than Tory references, the only Revolutionary War records located for a Mason COMBS in North Carolina thus far are (1) Pay Accounts (for service other than military) and (2) desertion (failure to report) - both probably in Surry Co, NC.

Although the author's mention of the pacifist leanings of Mason COMBS of Perry Co, KY (h/o Jane RICHARDSON) states that this subject will be discussed elsewhere in the manuscript, no other references have been found. Seeking reason for this statement (that Mason was a pacifist).
