A Winchester telegram says:

United States Marshal Mitchell Calmes has arrived here from Knott county with three important prisoners, Ben Martin, Thomas Combs and Simeon Combs, charged with forgery. Ben and Tom are each about 20 years of age, while Simeon is only 17. It appears that Martin was the leader, and that the trio have for some time been sending out bogus checks. The banks here have a number of customers scattered over Eastern Ken- tucky, among those of the Winchester bank being W. O. Davis, a substantial citizen of Hazard, Perry county. ............(continued)

Sylvania had apparently remarried by about 1899 to Wilburn THACKER (see 1900 Knott Co. census record). Fieldin(g) was living next door to Elijah FULLER in Mingo Co., WVA in 1900, and the 3 Oct. 1950 Bath Co., Va., DC for Fielden's last wife (2nd or 3rd), Elizabeth Lucas Combs, states her mother was one Mary FULLER and that she, Elizabeth, was born in Sassafras, Knott Co. Fielding Charles Combs d. 4 Nov. 1939 in Bath Co., Va. The only Darcus FULLER in the 1880 census was the 2 year old d/o of Archable and Dicy FULLER.

SE Note: I do not know which John W. Combs is referenced in this record. Clementine Cody, the wife of one John W. Combs (father of Dr. Josiah Combs), had a younger half-sister Millie Kinser, daughter of Matilda SMITH Cody Kinser and her second husband Emery KINSER. According to Dr. Combs in his The Combs Genealogy, this Millie married Samuel MAGGARD while my notes from Smith research state she married Hiram Maggard. I missed that discrepancy between Josiah's book and my Smith research notes. Since the 1898 court record referred to Millie as a Kinser, she likelymarried a short time afterwards and had another child, namely Ishmael T., aged 3 months. Daughter Bessie was about age 3 in 1898.I did not see a "Millie Kinser" in our 1900 Knott Co. census records or a Bessie Kinser. Edtor's Note: See the Combs archives for discussion of Bessie Kinser being the Dora in John's HH in the 1900 census.

Although no divorce record for Fielden and Sylvania has been located, they apparently divorced and she remarried William THACKER around 1899. William aka Wilburn states in 1900 that he had been married 1 year. Sylva states she has been married twice and has had 7 children with 6 living. Only 2 are shown on this census. Although William Combs is the only stepchild living with Sylva, see the 1910 census for Wilburn and Sylvania THACKER showing four Combs stepchildren living with them: Elijah, William, Winnie, and Angeline. According to researchers, there is also a son named Jerry Combs. He could be the Jeremiah Combs, age 9, living with Benjamin ENGLE in the 1900 Perry Co., Ky. census where he is styled as a nephew. Per an account of the murder in the March 30, 1939 edition of the Mountain Eagle, Hiram killed them on a public highway near Whitesburg and then shot himself. The DCs for both Millie and Nancy confirm they were shot to death (murdered) and died instantly from the pistol shots to the head and body. The Letcher Co., Ky. DC (#7844) for Mrs. Millie WHITAKER, resident of Whitesburg, the d/o of Madison Combs and Mary Ann SMITH, and the widow of Richard WHITAKER, states she was born 21 March 1878 and died on 28 March 1939. Notes Re: Murder of daughters Nancy and Millie. Nancy Combs DRAUGHN and Millie Ann Combs WHITAKER, both daughters of James Madison Combs and Mary Ann Smith, were shot to death on 28 March 1939 by Nancy's husband Hiram DRAUGHN following a dispute between Nancy and her husband Hiram, who, after first killing his wife and sister-in-law, then shot himself in the head and died the following day. The murder took place on a highway near Whitesburg according to a newspaper account found in the March 30, 1939 edition of the Mountain Eagle. The article stated that domestic troubles had been "brewing" for quite awhile between Nancy and Hiram and are believed to be responsible for the killing. Hiram followed the women down the road and first killed Nancy and then killed Millie as she was running away. The DCs for both woman stated they were shot to death (murdered) by pistol shots to the head and body and died instantly. The DC for Mrs. Nancy DRAUGHN (#07845) states she resided in Whitesburg, was age 49, and her husband was Hiram DRAUGHN. She was born 21 March 1890 in Knott Co, Ky., the daughter of Madison Combs and Mary Ann Smith. She died 28 March 1939 in Whitesburg, Letcher Co., Ky., and was buried in the Combs Cemetery (Peamoulter Cem) in Knott Co., which has been removed to the Carr Memorial Cemetery. She was listed as a Housekeeper and owned her own home. J Hiram Draughn was the s/o of Walter Draughn and Velarie Perkins per his 29 March 1939 DC.
