1880 PERRY COUNTY, KY. CENSUS unless otherwise noted is provided by Combs Researcher Marilyn Hansen from her personal copy of the "Annotated 1880 Perry Co, KY Census," compiled and published by Judy Cunagin of Indianapolis, Indiana. Marilyn adds: I debated on whether to leave Ms. Cunagin's notes in or take them out. I have decided to leave them in with the reminder to all to question the added information by asking ourselves "How Do We Know?" (Our Combs Research Motto) I think that leaving the annotations in will give us all the opportunity to 1) possibly find information fromsomeone else's research that we may have missed, and 2) if we don't agreewith the information, add to or correct it. IMPORTANT: The 1880 US Censusincluded (crucial) information omitted by the compiler, including: (1)the birth states of individuals and their parents; and (2) in most instances, the relationships of individuals in each household to the head of household.

Combs Researcher Debi Houser has made corrections and added the missing information to the Combs HHs below that were not found in Ms. Cunagin's published work. Added in red below.

Editor's Note: We have already completed "first draft" annotations for the following records, and are in the process of replacing each household herein with transcriptions by various members of our Combs Research Group, but in the meantime, we have included thismaterial with what we believe to be* the author's annotations in (parentheses), our Combs annotations in [brackets], and with known Combsby birth in bold. The only other major changes in formatting are our capitalization of SURNAMES, and removal of capitalization from givennames. Notes by Marilyn are indicated by MH Notes, and separatefrom the census record, as are general Combs Research annotations, whichare indicated by "Notes."

Notes: David Combs married Polly Davidson 1 Aug. 1860 however no bride was listed. (Sources: PCKY Marriages, Books A-F, Perry Co., Ky. Gen & Hist Soc., Inc., transcribed by Pat Horn and both the Breathitt Co., KY Vital Returns of their daughter, Peggy, born 4 Mar 1875 and the 29 Nov 1913 Perry Co., KY Death Certificate of daughter, Sealy (Celia above) which list their parents as David Combs and Polly Davidson). According to The Combes Genealogy, his parents were Nicholas and Margaret "Peggy" Combs Combs, however, since David, then age 10, born MO, appears "out of age order" in the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census HH of Nicholas Combs, it leaves open the question as to whether he was the son of Nicholas. Nicholas died by Jan. 1854 per probate records. Complete transcription needed for David's birth state (MO per the 1850) and birth states of both his parents and Peggy's parents. Notes: According to the 15 Dec 1941 Perry Co., KY Death Certificate of Riley Combs, he was born ca 1874, the son of Remine and Mary Combs Combs, both born Perry Co., KY. According to The Combes Genealogy, Mary Combs (daughter of Jeremiah L. and Sarah KELLY Combs) married Remines Combs, by whom she had Riley, Pearl and possibly others. The 1860 Perry census lists Marry [sic], 9, in HH of Jeremiah L., and the 1870, lists Mary, 16, in HH of her mother, Sally. The Combes Genealogy does not identify Remines Combs; however, according to Combs Researcher Jimmie "CrashedOne" Combs, Mary's full name was Alene Mary (no source and age wrong?) and Remines' full name was John D. Remines Combs, the latter son of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" and Sarah GRIGSBY Combs (no source). No son, however, by the name of John D. or Remines (etc.) is named by Jeremiah C. in his 1853 will, nor listed in any censusrecords.

Combs & Polly MOSELEY, both born KY, that she was divorced and that her husband (which?) was Perl or Brl? FULLER. The Combes Genealogy states that Susan Combs, daughter of John Lorenzo Combs and Polly Combs (daughter of "old" Shadrach Combs of Letcher), married (1) Bunt[sic] FULLER, the son of Elijah FULLER [which?], married (2) "later a Combs." Susan, the daughter of John L. and Polly (Combs? MOSELEY?) Combs, was born in 1844 according to their 1850 Perry Co., KY Census HH. Is this a second Susan Combs' divorce or the same? The only other Combs listed as divorced in this census is one Anderson Combs (HH#582), age 36. The only Susan married to a Combs in 1860 who is of the same age as the above Susan was Susan Combs (daughter of Clinton and Elizabeth Combs Combs according to The Combes Genealogy), wife of James Madison Combs (son of Jeremiah L. and Sarah KELLY Combs), who was 20 in their 1870 Perry Co., KY Census HH. Notes: Josiah H. Combs, son of Jesse & Polly BOWLING Combs, born 25 Nov 1831, was murdered during the French-Eversole Feud. Polly Ann, born 3 May 1830, died 7 Apr 1912, Perry Co., KY. NOTE: Relationship between William Mattingly and Johiah H. Combs not noted on census for this HH; Polly Ann's Death Certificate states her parents were Jesse MATTINGLY and Nancy BOWLING, however oral family history of Commissioner Bill James states that her parents were William MATTINGLY and Alice BOLING, who resided in Clay Co., KY prior to being in this HH. Polly Ann's death certificate also stated that she was born in Leslie Co., KY. Leslie Co., KY was not formed until 1878, from Clay, Perry, and Harlan Counties, KY.

Notes: Lorenzo Combs was the son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Combs Combs. According to The Combes Genealogy, he married Gency GREGORY (Gency nickname for Jane?). His wife's name was spelled "--ince?" in 1860 and "Ginsey" in 1870 (Perry KY Census), and the eldest child in both those census records was John, b ca 1856. Had either Lorenzo or Jane-Gincey been married previously (since the above marriage record would seem to indicate that John was possibly from an earlier marriage)? Was Kandis a male or female (Candace?). Not found on 1870 census. Was she daughter of Lorenzo or wife of Abijah?

MH Notes: Dora POLLY is the granddaughter of Joseph and Alcie Combs Davidson (Combs), and daughter of Edward and Sarah DAVIDSON Polly (all my direct gr.parents). Note that her brother, Frank POLLY was living in the home of #125 Granville Pearl and Alcie Combs(Davidson) Combs. A third child, Alcie, is not yet found. According to oral family tradition, Edward & Sarah DAVIDSON Polly had died, and Alcie DAVIDSON was sent to live with a Maiden Aunt Polly in Virginia. Alcie is my grandmother.

Notes: Polly and Nancy Ann Combs, the respective wives of Milton and Claiborn Combs, were the daughters of Harvey SIZEMORE and Willey Combs (see 19 April 1869 deed). Milton and Claiborn were the sons of Biram S. and Mariah MESSER Combs. Nancy Combs, the grantee of the above indenture is not yet identified. The comments within the parenthesis suggest she was at one time a Stacy, maybe a maiden name and that she may have married one Jesse S Combs). In the 1870 census, Jesse Combs and wife Nancy were living next door to Willie Combs SIZEMORE, the mother-in-law of Millton and Claiborn Combs. She could be Nancy STACY Combs the grantee. Nancy Ann, wife of Claiborn, is incorrectly annotated in the 1880 Perry Co census as the d/o of Russell Sizemore.

Combs...55 acres by survey about 2&1/2 miles below Hazard; 2) 1&1/2 mi below Hazard, Patent # 47254 dated 15 July 1872, 10 acres by survey; 3) land conveyed by Wade Combs on 28 April 1877 Deed Book E, p. 164...the undivided interest of Wade Combs in estate of Jerry C. Combs Deceased devised by will and known as the WOOTEN farm; and 4) All land in deed of conveyance dated 4 Dec. 1866, Deed Book D, p. 592-3 from Hiram WOOTEN Jr. and Ritta WOOTEN conveying their undivided interest in the Estate of J. Note: Wade Combs and Ritta WOOTEN were the children of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" Jerry Combs and his second wife Sallie GRIGSBY. Ritta married Hiram WOOTEN Jr., the son of stepfather. Josiah H. Combs was the son of Jesse Combs and Polly BOLLING.
