Richard & Elitia Combs Smith, and wife of George Combs, son of Henry "8" and Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr. Questions: Did either Nancy or George have children other than together? Might the reference be to a MARTIN child from her possible earlier marriage? Why was deed to Nancy rather than George? (George has not been located in 1860, but Nancy may have been in Perry County HH of her brother, Joshua SMITH.) See also 1836 Perry Records.
9 July 1850 (PC-DBD:45). This Indenture entered into this 9th day of July 1850 between Jeremiah C. Combs, Nicholas Combs Jr., and Samuel Combs Sr., sons of Nicholas Combs Sr., agree & bind ourselves jointly and severally, firmly by this presents, that thirty or forty years ago, that Nicholas Combs Sr. swapped a Negro man slave by the name of Rolle to John GRIGSBY of the State of Tennessee, for woman by the name of Crease, and Jeremiah C. Combs when the exchange was made by Nicholas Combs, Sr., and John GRIGSBY, Jeremiah C. Combs went into Tennessee, and brought the said Negro Crease out to Nicholas Combs, Sr., and the Bill of Sale that was made to Nicholas Combs, Sr., has been lost or mislaid, so that it cannot be found and some doubts have arisen between as heirs of Nicholas Combs Sr., whether the Bill Sale was made in the name of Jeremiah C. Combs as he went after the Negro, or Nicholas Combs, only as there is Nicholas Combs, Sr., and Nicholas Combs, Jr., one of us, one of the heirs And we jointly agree that after the death of Nicholas Combs, Sr., that if the Billy Sale is found that it is to be null and void between us, and we further agree and bind ourselves to each other, that every way that the said Nicholas Combs has disposed with the said female Negro, Crease and her increase away, as is to stand firm and unaltered forever. SE Notes: The instrument was labelled by the Clerk as an Agreement between Nicholas Combs Sr. and his sons. This deed is important as it is one more record that attests to the fact that Nicholas "8" Combs Sr. aka "Danger Nick" was still alive in 1850. It may provide a clue to Nancy GRIGSBY Combs' s family. The John GRIGSBY in Tennessee, perhaps a contemporary of Nicholas or even older, may have been a close relative. It indicates Jeremiah travelled back to Tennessee between 1810-1820.

The following is a newly-transcribed, newly-proofed 1850 Perry Co KY Census enumeration (21 Jul 1998)

Transcriber Abbreviations:
* = married within the census year (ended 01 Jun 1850)
- = over 20 years of age and cannot read or write
+ = attended schoolwithin census year

Reminders: (1) The 1850 US Census did not designate relationships; thus an adult man and woman in a household could conceivably be no relation at all; likewise,any children in the dwelling/family. (2) Nevertheless, as a "general rule of thumb," a man and woman and children in descending birth order usuallydenotes a "family." When, however, the children are listed "out of ageorder," this is often an indication that the "out of age order" children (listed below those children in descending age order) were not children of the man and wife listed on first two lines (nieces, nephews, cousins,no relation, etc.). (3) Each entry consists of 2 numbers, the first the dwelling (in order of visitation) and the second the family (in order ofvisitation). These numbers differ when more than one family resided ina single dwelling, and can provide further clues to familial relationships. Example: District 2, Dwelling 12, Families 12 and 13 below. (4) The census enumerator for District 1, John W. Remine, not only had atrocious handwriting, but may have also been dyslexic. Most certainly, he had a problem with line entries. Example: District 1, 003-003, HH of Ira Combs, shows that Ira could read and write, but that his wife, Cinda, age 26, and their daughter, Lavina, age 9 could not. Numerous examples of this appear in this district, and it appears clear that he did not intend to mark a 9 year old (underage 21) as illiterate, but had dropped down one line. This is also seen with Dwelling Numbers whereby the one year old infant in (what was obviously) the preceding Dwelling became the head of household for the following dwelling; or, conversely, the female on the following line). In those instances,we have self-admittedly "corrected" the census taker.Mea Culpa. LG and CH.

Combs. According to The Combes Genealogy, Jeremiah's ancestry is unknown (He is referred to as Jeremiah Combs of "Lower Perry"). Not known if all of above children are theirs, and based on their marriage date, they probably had older children not in this household (perhaps on either side of him in the census?). Their only other documented child is Susan Combs, first wife of Felix Combs (District 02, 114-122.) Was Ceily their daughter, or the daughter of Polly? Was Polly wife of Ephraim or sister? Combs, deceased, and he is listed as an heir of Sally D. Combs. The old William D. Combs was the widowed husband of Sally Combs, daughter of Mason Combs. Also Note: According to Combs Researcher Jimmie "CrashedOne Combs," an annotated 1850 Perry Co. Ky census states that Lurena Combs was nee STACY (no source given) and adds that she appears in H/H 632 of the 1860 Perry Co., KY Census under Lorena STACY with Alexander, John, Virgil, and Mary all in her HH as STACYS, and Robert listed as a Combs with Hezekiah Combs in HH245. A look at the original 1860 census shows she was listed as Sorena STACY instead of Lorena. In 1870 and 1880, she was shown as Serena Combs. This is further confirmed by Martha's 1864 Perry Co., KY marriage record to Daniel SMITH (son of Samuel and Nancy JONES Smith), which lists her as Martha Combs-CAMPBELL.
