Transcriber Abbreviations:
* = married within the census year (ended 01 Jun 1850)
- = over 20 years of age and cannot read or write
+ = attended schoolwithin census year
Reminders: (1) The 1850 US Census did not designate relationships; thus an adult man and woman in a household could conceivably be no relation at all; likewise, any children in the dwelling/family. (2) Nevertheless, as a "general rule of thumb," a man and woman and children in descending birth order usuallydenotes a "family." When, however, the children are listed "out of ageorder," this is often an indication that the "out of age order" children (listed below those children in descending age order) were not children of the man and wife listed on first two lines (nieces, nephews, cousins,no relation, etc.). (3) Each entry consists of 2 numbers, the first the dwelling (in order of visitation) and the second the family (in order ofvisitation). These numbers differ when more than one family resided ina single dwelling, and can provide further clues to familial relationships. Example: District 2, Dwelling 12, Families 12 and 13 below. (4) The census enumerator for District 1, John W. Remine, not only had atrocious handwriting, but may have also been dyslexic. Most certainly, he had a problem with line entries. Example: District 1, 003-003, HH of Ira Combs, shows that Ira could read and write, but that his wife, Cinda, age 26, and their daughter, Lavina, age 9 could not. Numerous examples of this appear in this district, and it appears clear that he did not intend to mark a 9 year old (underage 21) as illiterate, but had dropped down one line. This is also seen with Dwelling Numbers whereby the one year old infant in (what was obviously) the preceding Dwelling became the head of household for the following dwelling; or, conversely, the female on the following line). In those instances,we have self-admittedly "corrected" the census taker.Mea Culpa. LG and CH.
District 1
001-001 William GULLETT - 29 M Farmer $400
Ann - 29 F
Elisa 5 F
Minerva 4 F
Henry C. 2 M
Notes: William GULLETT married 08 Aug 1844, Perry Co., KY, Ann Combs, daughter of Henry & Nancy BROWN Combs, Jr. (18 Feb 1857, Perry KY DBC: 458 and Perry Co., KY Groom's Index). Not identified by The Combes Genealogy. This record did not include birth state(s). Corrected: Earlier transcription indicated surname GILETTE, Elisa as Eliza, and listed value of $100.
003-003 Ira Combs 26 M Farmer $250
[Farmer & 250 were on the line for Cinda's occupation]
Cinda Marella - 26 F
Lavina - 9 F
Elvira 8 F
John 5 M
Andrew 4 M
Ira 1/12 M *
Notes: Ira Combs and Lucinda Marella STACY (25 Aug 1852 Perry KY Vital Statistics) 1860 Perry Co., KY Census. Also Note: This is an instance where it appears that the census enumerator "dropped a line down," including literacy. The lack of literacy of one month old Ira Combs was probably meant for John COUCH in 004-004 (Next below.) This record does not include birth state(s). Not identified in The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed "Cinde" rather than "Cinda Marilla;" and "Lavissa" rather than Lavina.
004-004 John COUCH - 38 M VA Farmer $400
Rachel - 27F KY
Polly 10 F
Henry 9 M
Nancy 7 F
Mathias 6 M
Ezekiel 3 M
Alfred 1 M
Notes: John COUCH married 22 Apr 1837, Perry Co., KY, Rachel Combs, daughter of Henry & Nancy BROWN Combs, Jr. (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index and 01/15 Sep 1853 & 18 Feb 1857 Perry Co., KY Records). Not identified in The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription spelled Ezekial, not Ezekial; and Matthias, not Mathias. Birth locations for children not included, but may have all been KY (with no "Ditto" added).
006-006 Bluford Combs - 24 M Farmer [No value listed]
Winney - 25 F
William 4 M
Elizabeth 1 F
Notes: Bluford Combs married 25 Feb 1846, Perry Co., KY, Winney Combs (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index and Vital Statistics, dated 07-22-1853). See Also Breathitt Co., KY Vital Statistics. No birth state listed, but may have been "Ditto" for KY for all. Bluford may have been deceased by 1860 when Winny C. Combs appears on 1860 Perry Co., KY Census with these children and more. Not found in 1870 yet. See 1880 Breathitt KY. Also note that Bluford and Buford are sometimes interchangeable and sometimes found as William B. Not identified in The Combes Genealogy. Is it possible that either Bluford or Winnifred was a daughter of Jeremiah Combs who follows?
007-007 Jeremiah Combs 62 M Farmer $200
Elizabeth -52 F VA
Evelina - 22 F KY
Ephraim 19 M KY Laborer
Polly 15 F KY
Ceily 1 F KY
Notes: Jeremiah C. "Curly" Combs married 29 May 1810, Clay Co., KY, Elizabeth "Betsy" Combs, daughter of Henry "8" and Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr. (1833 Perry Records and Dickey Diary Interview of Elizabeth's nephew, William M. Combs. According to The Combes Genealogy, Jeremiah's ancestry is unknown (He is referred to as Jeremiah Combs of "Lower Perry"). Not known if all of above children are theirs, and based on their marriage date, they probably had older children not in this household (perhaps on either side of him in the census?). Their only other documented child is Susan Combs, first wife of Felix Combs (District 02, 114-122.) Was Ceily their daughter, or the daughter of Polly? Was Polly wife of Ephraim or sister? If wife, which was the child of Jeremiah and Elizabeth, Ephraimor Polly? If Ephraim was, in fact, a son-in-law, was he Ephraim, son of Stephen and Martha Jane "Patsy" BROWN Combs (see 009-009 below)? Is Evalina, born ca 1828, the same as Ebeline [sic], age 21, who married Henry G. (or C.) Combs, apparent son of Stephen and Martha"Patsy" Combs, on 19 Mar 1854, Perry Co., KY (Henry and Evaline named a son, Jeremiah, in 1858 (Perry VS) and in 1860, they are on the Breathitt Co., KY census, Evoline, age 27, and a Celia, age 10 is also in HH (same as above?). Also Note: No birth state listed for Jeremiah, but may have been "ditto" for KY. Neither Jeremiah, nor Elizabeth, have been located in 1860 Perry, although Elizabeth may be the Betty, age 70, in HH 243-241. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed (1) Elizabeth as age 58, not 52; (2) Cecily rather than "Ceily;" (3) included no birth locations; nor (4) occupation for Ephraim. SW: Evalina, Celia, Mary
008-008 Margaret Combs - 31 F KY
Stephen 18 M KY Laborer
Notes: Who are the above Margaret & Stephen Combs? Siblings? Of whom? Could either or both be children of the above Jeremiah and Elizabeth? Or was Stephen, age 18, be the same as Stephen, age 22 in the 1850 Breathitt CoKY HH of Stephen and Martha Jane "Patsy" FRANCIS Combs (See next)? Neither Margaret nor Stephen are identified by The Combes Genealogy. See also Benjamin STACY, formerly of Perry, but later of Breathitt, who may have married a Margaret "Peggy" Combs and left her prior to 1850 to first live with, and later marry, Hannah YOUNG. Corrected: Earlier transcription did not include birth states.
010-010 Stephen Combs - 45 M KY Farmer $300
Francis - 45M KY
William 16 M KY Laborer
Jackson 15 M KY
Lucinda 13 F KY
James 11 M KY
Nancy 9 F KY
Wilson 4 M KY
Hugh 1 M KY
Notes: Stephen Combs, son of Henry & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr. (Dickey Diary), married 22 Apr 1824 Perry Co., KY (Groom's Index), Martha "Patsy" FRANCIS (1937 Boyd Co., KY Death Certificate of son, Wilson). See Also 1850 Breathitt Co., KY Census, District No. 1, Dwelling 89 for duplicate (mostly) entry; except Breathitt lists (1) wife's name as Patsy; and (2) includes Ephraim, age 18 (Could the Ephraim of 1850 Breathitt in Stephen's household be the Ephraim, age 19, in Jeremiah's HH above?). Ephraim is not included in The Combes Genealogy (which apparently used only the 1850 Perry); (3) includes Stephen, age 22. Corrected: Earlier transcription did not include birth locations; value, or occupation for William; and listed "Francis" as "Patsy" (name of wife in 1850 Breathitt Co., KY Census).
011-011 Felix STACY, 23, M, Farmer, KY, * [Only Felix in 1850]
Cynthia, 23, F, KY,
Polly, 34, F, KY
John, 1, M, KY
Calvin STACY, 21, M, Laborer, KY,
SE NOTES: Now the above is not definite proof that Felix Sr. was the same as Downey. There is a 1838 Perry Co., Ky. Chancery Court case (where divorces were handled in those days) wherein Sally Stacy sued Felix Stacy (no other info
available), and there is a Sally Stacy in the 1850 Perry Co., Ky. census. So maybe Sally was Felix's wife. See HH 015-016 below, and also see any discussion of Downey Stacy in the archives.
012-012 Lucy YOUNG - 45 F VA
Chany - 25 F KY.
Polly 17 F KY

William 11 M VA
Larkin 9 M VA
Louisa 8 F VA
John 7 M VA
13 William FIELDS, 9, M, KY
James TOLER, 3, M, KY
John, 1, M, KY
Notes: Lucy was neè FIELDS, and mother of Henry & Chaney FIELDS who were her natural children by Henry Combs, Jr., son of Henry & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr. Henry FIELDS later went to court in Perry Co., KY where he successfully gained recognition as son of Henry Combs, Jr. See also 1851 Perry Co., KY record of Lucy FIELDS. She had married Nathan YOUNG, Sr., by 1833 when their daughter, Polly YOUNG, was born. (Combs Researcher Tim Spence) The children in 13 were those of Chaney FIELDS (Combs Researcher Debi Kendrick and see 1880 Owsley Co., KY Census). Not identified in The Combs Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed "Mahalaa" instead of "Mahulda (?);" "Chany"as "Chaney;" included no birth states for children; did not indicate that William FIELDS and James TOLER were in same dwelling, and omitted John, age 1, entirely.
015-016 Sally STACY, 40, F, KY,
Benjamine, 16, M, Laborer, KY
Elisha, 19, F, KY
Felix, 4, M, KY

Perminia - 23 F KY
Couch 12 M KY
Eli 9 M KY
Wiley 7 F Ky
Jane or Janie 6 F KY
Abigal 3 F KY
Notes: Perminia Combs, daughter of Henry & Nancy BROWN Combs, Jr., married Ira COUCH, 01 Feb 1840, Perry Co., KY (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index, and Perry Co., KY Records dated 18 Feb 1857 (Perry KY DBC:458); and/or 23 Jan 1845, Perry Co., KY, Perminia Combs married Silas [sic] COUCH (Perry Co., KY Groom's Index and Perry Co., KY Records dated 07 Aug 1854, 27 Mar 1856. Pending 1860 Perry Co., KY Census, not known if Silas and Ira were one and the same, although it appears likely. It appears unlikely, however, based on their ages, that Couch was a son of Ira and/or Perminia, raising question as to whether any of these children in this HH were those of Ira and Perminia? It also appears unlikely that his name was Couch COUCH. Could he have been Couch Combs? If so, were any/all of the children who follow also Combs? Not identified in The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) did not include birth states; (2) "Couch 12 M" was listed as "Cecelia 12 F;" and (3) "Abigal 3 F" was listed as "Abijah 3 M."
022-023 William McINTOSH 29 M KY [$200?]
Syrina - 22 F KY
Nancy 4 F KY
Elizabeth 2 F KY
John 2/12 (or 7/12?) M Ky
Notes: Syrena-Sarena may have been neè Combs, possibly daighter of Squire Nicholas "Birdeye" Combs & Elizabeth Combs (See 1860 Perry Co., KY census HH). See also 07 Nov 1852 Perry Co., KY record for William and Susan [sic] Combs McIntosh and 12 Jan 1844 Perry Co., KY marriage record for William McINTOSH. The Combes Genealogy states that Nicholas and Elizabeth Combs Combs, Jr. had a daughter named Sarena, but show her married to a William WOOTEN. She appears to be a widow in the 1860 Perry Co., KY Census HH of Nicholas and Elizabeth (her parents?) Did she subsequently marry a WOOTEN? Corrected: Earlier transcription included no birth states; listed Syrina as "Sarena."
85-93 Elijah BEGLEY 22 F[?], KY
Mary, 16, M[?], KY
Notes: According to The Combes Genealogy, Mary Combs, daughter of Samuel and Nancy CORNETT Combs, married Elijah R. BEGLEY; however, 6 Sep 1852 Perry Co., KY VS lists Elijah BEGLEY and Nancy [sic] Combs as parents of Elijah BEGLEY (Jr.).
090-098 Henry Combs
- 53 M TN Farmer $2000
Nancy - 53 F NC
Wiley - 24 M NC
Hugh - 22 M NC
William 15 M NC
Nancy FRANCIS 15 F NC
Notes: Henry Combs, Jr. (son of Henry & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr.), married Nancy BROWN 11 Mar 1816, Clay Co., KY. The above Hugh Combs is apparently the same who had married by 08-07-1852 the above Nancy FRANCIS (Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics.) See also 18 Feb 1857 Perry Co., KY DBC:458 documenting children. The 1860 Perry KY Census lists Nancy BROWN Combs in home of son Hugh Combs, as age 64, born SC [sic], and she is also in Hugh's 1870 Perry KYHH. Only the above three children are listed in The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier Transcription listed Nancy as Nancy A., and included no birth states for children.
146-154 William Combs 44 M KY Farmer 200

Franklin 17 M KY
Larkin 15 M KY
Rebecca 13 F KY
Armina 11 F KY
Jesse 9 M KY
Ana 7 F KY
Jesse 5 M KY
Mary 3 F KY
Notes: Possibly the same William Combs who married 17 Jul 1832, Perry Co., KY, although a late start, if so. Also note presence of two male children named Jesse, which may indicate second family in this dwelling. Not identified in The Combes Genealogy, although mentioned in Chapter X, p. 92. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed Malinda as 18; Armina as "America;" and included no birth states. William and his wife aremissing for the years 1860 & 1870. In 1880, they are found living with their son Edward COMBS in Pulaski Co., Kentucky.

*The entry for Elizabeth 1 F KY shows the name, James, lined out and replaced with Elizabeth.
Notes: Granville Pearl Combs, son of Nicholas & Elizabeth Combs Combs(Dickey Diary), married (1) Marinda (a.k.a. Miranda) BRESHEARS, daughter of Robert S. and Mary "Polly: EVERAGE Breshears (Perry Co., KY Records, 13 Jun 1852 and Pension File of RW William CORNETT); and (2) Alice "Elsie Dutch" Combs, widow of Joseph DAVIDSON (1914 Perry KY Obituary), and daughter of Jesse and Polly BOLLING Combs (1914 Perry KY DC). If, however, he is same who married 14 Apr 1847 Perry Co., KY, then who was above Robert Combs, age 8? According to The Combes Genealogy, Granville Combs (son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Combs Combs) married "Melinda Brashear (or Sallie Polly?); [and] Elsie ("Dutch"), dau. of Jesse Combs" with no indication of the reason for inclusion of Sallie POLLY. Could she have been mother of Robert? Also Note: Although Robert's age could be either 8 or 18, the 1860 Perry Co., KY Census HH 236-234 lists Robert as 18, thus probably 8 in 1850. See 1860, 1870 Perry Co., KY Census. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed Granville as 25, not 28; Marinda as Malinda; Elizabeth as Jane Elizabeth; *William OWENS as 25, not 28; Jane as 19, not 10; "Wane 9 F" as Wilson 9 M;" and birth states not included.

Mathew + 10 M KY
Shadrick + 8 M KY
Daniel + 6 M KY
Rachel + 4 F KY
Franklin 2 M KY
Notes: Francis "Frank" Combs, son of Henry & Rachel CLEMENTS Combs, Sr. According to Dickey Diary Interview of William M. Combs, "... Frank married Bettie OLIVER first, second Polly COUCH, lived and died in Perry … " Note also, however, the 05 Mar 1855 Perry Co., KY record of a Francis & Polly HOLLIDAY Combs. Was Polly neè COUCH or might she have been HOLLIDAY? Bettie and family are found on the 1860 Lawrence Co., KY Census and in 1880. Elizabeth is living with son Franklin in the Breathitt Co., KY. According to The Combes Genealogy, Chapter XXII, p. 145, Frank married (2) a Polly CROUCH [sic]. On p. 149 are listed only the above children, excepting Shadrach. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed no birth state for Francis; Mathew as "Matthew;" Shadrach instead of Shadrick, and no birth states for four youngest children. Francis is in the 1880 Perry Co., KY Census with Polly. Further research is needed to determine if there was a divorce and a second marriage to Polly Couch.

It was probably William and Jane who could not read and write. Not listed in The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed Henderson as "Harrison or Henderson;" Elisha as "Elihu;" and included no birth states for last 6 individuals.

This may also be the William Combs who married 20 Jul 1840 Perry Co., KY; however, if so, a 7-year wait occurred before children started happening? According to The Combes Genealogy, William was the son of Samuel & Nancy Combs Cornett, and married (1) Mary [sic] BEGLEY; and (2) Mrs. Mary Herndon Burke. Corrected: Earlier transcription listed Lethe as "Litha" and no birth states included.

Notes: See Also John HACKER affidavit in pension file of R W Nicholas Combs. Question: Is there any possibility that his wife might have been a second marriage, and neè Lydia HARRELL, widow of George"8" Combs, d ca1822, Perry Co., KY? (No mention is made of Lydia in The Combes Genealogy subsequent to death of George, but she is documented as having still been alive as late as 1857 (Perry KY Records)).

Notes: Willie a.k.a. Willa Combs (ancestry unknown, possibly formal given name of Wilmoth?) married Harvey SISEMORE 3 May 1845, Perry KY per 1856-1857 Perry Co., KY Records, Groom's Index and 1870 Perry KY Census. Not listed in the Combes Genealogy.

Robert 10 M KY
Alexander 8 M KY
John 6 M KY
Virgil 4 M KY
Mary 4/12 FKY
013 William D. Combs - 60 M Unk.
Notes: Lurena Combs aka Reen Combs aka Serena Combs was the widow of Jackson D. Combs, born ca 1816, Kentucky, died Sep. 1849 per 1850 US Census Mortality Schedule, Perry Co., KY. In 1861, Reen Combs, widow of Jackson G [D] Combs, sold land to Harvey SIZEMORE. In 1870, the above six children are listed as heirs of Jackson D. Combs, deceased, and he is listed as an heir of Sally D. Combs. The old William D. Combs was the widowed husband of Sally Combs, daughter of Mason Combs. Also Note: According to Combs Researcher Jimmie "CrashedOne Combs," an annotated 1850 Perry Co. Ky census states that Lurena Combs was nee STACY (no source given) and adds that she appears in H/H 632 of the 1860 Perry Co., KY Census under Lorena STACY with Alexander, John, Virgil, and Mary all in her HH as STACYS, and Robert listed as a Combs with Hezekiah Combs in HH245. A look at the original 1860 census shows she was listed as Sorena STACY instead of Lorena. In 1870 and 1880, she was shown as Serena Combs. Also note that this family is not included in the General Table of The Combes Genealogy (although a William D. is referenced with a wife Vina on p. 65 as unidentified). William D. Combs is now identified. Probate records for the estate of Mason Combs clearly show William D. Combs to be the same as William Combs Sr. that married Mason's daughter Sally Combs Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) included no birth locations; (2) listed Elesaas Elisa; and (3) did not show that William D. was in same dwelling.
013-014 Alexander S. Combs - 25 M KY Farmer [no value listed]
Polly 23 F KY
Silas 3 M KY
Crittenden 2 M KY
Notes: This Alexander S. Combs was not Alexander Combs who married Mary "Polly" BRESHEARS, as has been stated by some researchers. This Alexander Combs married Polly Combs per the 11 Aug 1915 Perry Co., KY death certificate of son, Crittenden. This family is missing from the 1860 and 1870 Perry Census, but see 1880. See also Two Alexander and Mary (Polly) Combs of Perry Co., KY. Corrected: Not listed in The Combes Genealogy. Earlier transcription included no birth locations; Crittenden was spelled Crittendon.
014-015 Biram I. or S. [?] Combs - 32 M KY Farmer [no value listed]
Feribe 26 F KY
James 5 M KY
Jesse 3 M KY
Notes: Two Biram Combs married in 1836 in Perry Co., KY, not known which record is which, and this Biram seems young for either, plus large gap between marriage date and eldest child (The other Biram Combs, son of George and Lydia ARRELL Combs, married Mariah MESSER). Note also that this Biram has not yet been found in 1860. Nor is he listed (so far as we can tell) in the General Table of The Combes Genealogy (although Biram S. is referred to as an unidentified Combs on page 89). See also Biram "8" Combs of East KY which includes additional re other Biram Combs). Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) included no birth locations; (2) Feribe was spelled Fenbe; and (3) "James 5 M" was listed as "Jane 5 F."

Jesse - 22 M KY Farmer

Notes: Widow of ? This family not found in General Table of The Combes Genealogy. Enumerator marked all four individuals as unable to read or write even though none of the children over 20 years in age, and even though he also listed Margaret (S.?) as having attended school within the census year. Not found in The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) did not include birth locations; (2) Rachael was spelled Rachel.

Notes: Robert C. Eliza was the daughter of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" Combs based on 1853-1854 Perry Co., KY will and estate records for Jeremiah C. The Combes Genealogy, General Table, pp. 135-6, (erroneously?) lists "R.C." Combs as the husband of Eliza GODSEY (no source). Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) did not include birth locations and (2) listed "Martha 3 F" as "Martha 3 F?."

Combs). His widow remarried on 10 Jun 1854, to Hiram WOOTEN (See also 1860 Perry Co., KY Census, HH#11 of H. C. WOOTEN). Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) did not include birth locations; (2) listed "Jeremiah C." as "Jeremiah;" (3) "Bettia" as "Bettie;" (4) "Rany 4 F" as "Remines-Remy 4 M;" and (5) value as 1200 instead of $7250.

Notes: Nicholas Combs, Jr., son of "Danger" Nicholas "8" & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr., married 05 Jun 1816, Floyd Co., KY, Elizabeth Combs, daughter of RW John "8" Combs (Dickey Diary, 1860 Perry Co., KY Census, 11/20/1918 Perry Co., KY DC of their son, Elhanen M. Combs). The Combes Genealogy does not include Kendrick as a son; however, in Oct.1863, Nicholas sells land to Milley Combs, the widow of Kendrick, and her 4 children. He is the Kendrick Combs of the 1860 Perry Co., KY Census, age 25, who married Millie Combs. (See also Kendrick-Sealie 1854 Perry marriage record) Corrected: Earlier transcription listed (1) Nicholas Combs as born in VA instead of TN; (2) included no other birth locations; (3) listed Kendrick as "Henderson;" (4) listed "Lorenso 15 M" as "Louisa 13 F;" (5) "Mararet or Margret" as Margaret.

46-48 Zachariah CAMPBELL - 28 M KY Farmer 300 married within year
Rebecca, 21, F, KY married within year
Elizabeth, 2, F, KY
Notes: According to Perry Co., KY DBB:335-6, dated Nov 1844, one Zachariah CAMPBELL was an heir (somehow) to Jeremiah L. Combs, Sr. One Zachariah CAMPBELL (quite possibly not the same) had apparently married Paulina-Purlina Combs, daughter of Jeremiah L. Combs, by Sep 1848 (Perry KY DBB:477) and they are found in the 1850 Breathitt Co., KY Census. The above Zachariah is listed as having married within the census year, but with a two year old child in the household who may not have been that of Rebecca. Might he have been the same Zachariah listed in the 1844 record?
049-051 James FRANCIS - 70 M VA Farmer $200
Rebecca - 51 F VA
Lawson 19 M VA
Wiley Combs 16 M VA Farmer
Wesley FRANCIS 13 M VA
Notes: Wesley FRANCIS is listed with #050-052 to left of his name, but it appears that the census taker "dropped a line" and that he was last name in this HH instead of first name in next HH. Who was Wiley Combs? According to Perry Co., KY Groom's Index, James FRANCIS married 20 Oct 1831; surname of bride unknown. Corrected: Earlier record (1) did not include birth locations; (2) listed Rebeccaas age 57; (3) Wesley FRANCIS as "Wesley or Frances Combs." (It is possible that either the census enumerator first began to write Combs, then wrote FRANCIS over it, or that Wesley's name was Wesley C. FRANCIS. Hard to decipher from copy of original; except Wesley's surname definitely listed as FRANCIS, not Combs).

Why is her surname COX? Did she marry a COX after the death of her husband? Also note that given Elijah was only 14 that it may have been Sally COX who was illiterate with the census taker having dropped a line. Sallie (as a Combs again) may be listed in the 1860 Perry with son, Elijah Combs. Her son, Nicholas, is also found in the 1860 with wife, Eliza WILLIAMS, and daughter, Jane, with husband, Leviticus FULLER.Corrected: Earlier Transcription listed as HH 087; included no birth locations; listed Jane as age 13.

William 2 M KY
Dianna 5/12 F KY
Notes: Moses Combs married Lythie Combs according to the 1912 Knott Co., KY death certificate of his son, the above Felix [sic], b1824-7, KY. Felix Combs married (1) bef 1848, Susanna Combs (daughter of Jeremiah C. "Curly and Elizabeth Combs Combs of District 1, 007-007), died 30 May 1858, Perry Co., KY; by whom he had the above William and Dianna and Moses (1858 Perry KY VS and 1860 Perry Co., KY Census); married (2) in Oct 1858, Perry Co., KY, Chloe BEGLEY (who apparently was the widow of (1) Ezekiel HALL and (2) Unknown BEGLEY). Moses was the son of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" & Synthia SUMNER Combs, and married Lydia Combs, defined by The Combes Genealogy, General Table, pp. 140-141, as "old Geo. Combs' daughter" [George "8" & Lydia HARRELL Combs]; however, the Dickey Diary Interview of Andrew Combs, born ca 1806, KY, and also a son of Jeremiah and Synthia, includes the statement that his brother, Moses, was a full grown man when Andrew was a boy. Dr. Combs also mentions Susannah, William and Dianna as also on the 1850 census, but does not identify them as the wife and children of Felix. Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) listed this as HH #121; (2) included no birth locations; (3) listed Lette as Lita; (4) Jeremiah as Ephraim; and (5) Thelix as Andy. (See also): A 3 Aug. 1861 Perry Co. deed identifies Jerry Combs, Phelix Combs, and Samuel Combs as the heirs at law of Moses Combs, deceased. The deed was signed by Jerry and Polly [his wife[ Combs.
(See also next)115-123 Nancy CAMPBELL, 46, F, KY, *
Hiram, 8, M, KY
Martha, 5, F, KY
Notes: According to a granddaughter of the above Martha, interviewed by Combs Researcher Jim Cornett, Martha told her that she and Hiram Hite were Nancy CAMPBELL'S children by Moses Combs (114-122), and that Moses was never married to her mother. This is further confirmed by Martha's 1864 Perry Co., KY marriage record to Daniel SMITH (son of Samuel and Nancy JONES Smith), which lists her as Martha Combs-CAMPBELL. Nancy CAMPBELL is in 1870 and 1880 Perry Co., KY Census records in HH of Daniel & Martha Combs-CAMPBELL Smith. In 1860, only Moses' wife is found on the Perry Co., KY census (HH239). According to another story, Moses Combs beat Nancy CAMPBELL and left her for dead in a creek, then ran off because he thought he had killed her, possibly why he is not to be found after 1850; however, a 3 Aug. 1861 Perry Co. deed lists Jerry Combs, Phelix Combs, and Samuel Combs as the heirs at law of Moses Combs deceased? Not included in The Combes Genealogy.

They were in Missouri in the earlier 1840s according to her father's estate records. Peggy is in the 1880 Perry KY Census HH of David, listed as his mother, but why is he listed "out of age order?" The Combes Genealogy identifies this as Nicholas and Margaret "Peggy" Combs Combs, but it is not clear to which family they are attached (Conflicts in the General Table). Side note: Carole and Louise are both agreed that Simon was not a Thomas, but Louise not certain that name might be Simon. 1860 Census Record needed.

Notes: Alexander Combs marroed Mary "Polly" BRESHEARS (06 Jul 1853, 05 May 1858 and 1870 (Census, Hazard Precinct, #9) Perry Co., KY Records). Also note that other researchers have mistakenly assigned Mary BRESHEARS to Alexander S. Combs in District 01. This family not yet found in 1860 Census; however, see 1870 Perry Co., KY Census, Hazard Precinct, #9. The Combes Genealogy …, General Table, p. 139, lists Alexander as son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Combs Combs, Jr. (Undocumented) See also Two Alexander and Mary (Polly) Combs of Perry Co., KYCorrected: Earlier transcription (1) listed as HH 196; (2) included no birth locations; (3) listed Almira as Margaret.

Elias Combs 22 M Farmer 400 Ky.
Lucinda 22 F KY
202 Jabez L. HAMILTON 27 M VA Hatter
Notes: It appears likely that the census enumerator "dropped a line" and that Robert CAUDELL was actually in 183-200, and that Elias Combs was head of this HH (See full census). Elias Combs married Lucinda CORNETT (17 Dec 1852, Perry Co., KY Records) According to The Combes Genealogy, Elias was the son of Tarlton and Elizabeth ISON Combs (no source). Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) listed HH as 200 instead of 184-201; (2) listed as CAUDILL; (3) omitted info that a second "family" (Jabez L. HAMILTON who was listed as Jabey HAMILTON) was also listed in this dwelling; (4) omitted birth states other than Elias.

Notes: Jackson G. Combs, son of Elijah & Sarah ROARK Combs, Sr. (Jul and Aug1852 and 8 Nov 1855 Perry Co., KY records) Wife Martha aka Patsy was the d/o of James CRANK of Knox Co., Ky. (Source: Knox Co., Ky. Kinfolk v.2#12, 12/1/1978). The Combes Genealogy, which apparently used this census record for children (except with Elijah listed as Elizabeth and noted as missing), also lists Martha as neč CRANK (no source). Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) listed this as #204 rather than 187-205; (2) included no birth locations; (3) listed Jackson G. as Jackson; (4) listed value as $500 instead of $4000. By 1860, deeds involving the children of Jackson G. Combs only list Sally HOGG, Elijah and James Combs.
196-215 Isaac YOUNG - 31 M KY Farmer $150

Notes: Isaac YOUNG married Polly Combs 08 Jan 1840, Perry Co., KY (Groom's Index and 12 Feb 1852 and 05 Sep 1855 Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics). Also note, however, that an 1853 record lists wife as Sally. 1870 Perry Co., KY census also shows Polly. Not listed in General Table of The Combes Genealogy. Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) listed this as #214 rather than 196-215; (2) did notinclude additional data for Jeremiah. New information corrects marriage date from 1 Aug1840 to 8 Jan 1840.

Catharine 15 F KY
Ustla [?] 13 F KY

Harrison 9 M KY
Ira 6 M KY
Transcription Note: The numbering for census pages 432-3 appears to include a number of "line errors;" i.e., 247-267 lists Hiram PRATT, age 22, as HH for a family that includes the family of Rheuben SMITH, age 58; and 247-268 (same dwelling, separate family) lists Clinton GODSEY as HH for the family of Tarleton Combs. It will be necessary for researchers to view Louise Gaskill's full transcription and/r the original document to understand what appears to have occurred here; thus, we have included only the family of Tarlton Combs. Note Also: Tarlton Combs, son of Mason & Jane "Jennie" RICHARDSON Combs, Sr. (Dickey Diary), married 25 Dec 1826 in Perry Co., KY (Groom's Index), Elizabeth ISON (1934 Perry Co., KY Death Certificate of son, Ira). Also note that first letter of Ustla's name questionable. Listed in The Combes Genealogy.Corrected: Earlier transcription (1) listed this as #267 rather than 247-268; (2) listed Tarleton Combs as born in VA, not KY (no other birth locations included); (3) Catharine as Catherine; (4) "Ustla (?)" [probably Ursula?] as "Martha (?);" and (5) Ira as age 9.
