Jerry married Mariah Campbell. The son, Richmond married Malissa Stamper 5 May 1917 in Perry Co., KY.. Combs. (Source: Josiah Combs's The Combs Genealogy.) His wife is Sarah Sally Allen (Source: 8 Apr 1952 Kentucky Death Certificate for son Jason Combs and 23 Nov. 1872 Indenture PC-DBE:38-39 where heirs of Samuel Allen are listed, including Samuel and Sally Combs). They are both buried in the Clear Creek Cem., Fisty, Perry Co. Ky. Son, Jason, went on to marry Sylvania Ritchie.

brother William is next door. By 1900, Fielden and Sylvania are divorced, and Fielden Combs is living in Mingo Co., WV. Sylvania remarried Wilburn aka William Thacker and they are found in the 1900 Knott Co. census. Angeline is next found in the 1910 Knott Co. census living with her mother and stepfather Thacker and her siblings Elijah, William, and Winnie. In 1900, Angeline's brother Jeremiah is living with his uncle Benjamin Engle, and her brother William is living with his mother.

Ky. He married Matilda Young. (See Matilda's death certificate Knott Co., KY dated 19 Apr 1937, daughter of William Young and Polly McIntire. In 1920 Census Samuel and Matilda were in Knott Co., KY. Jane (Surrilda Jane Combs) married Samuel Fugate. Columbus married Cordelia Young. Rosella married Adam Feltner. Jason married Famy Combs (d/o Jeremiah "Free Jerry" Combs & Roseanna Engle). Lynda Combs Gipson and Sue Elfving Notes: Wade Combs was a son of Jerry Combs and Sally GRIGSBY (Source: 15 Dec 1925 Perry Co., Kentucky Death Certificate for Wade.) Wade married Manerva Williams, the daughter of Nick and Annie Williams (Source: 18 Dec 1935 Perry Co., KY Death Certificate of Manerva) about 1885 (Source: 1900 Census above; Wade is still living with his mother Sallie GRIGSBY Combs WOOTEN in the 1880 Perry Co., Ky. census; Manerva Williams is still living with her father in 1880). Also note: It is not yet known why daughter Flora is older than the date of their marriage. There is not a Flora (of any surname near that age) in the 1880 census. Flora Mae Combs, married Abijah Ritchie. Austin married Samantha Cornett (d/o William G. Cornett & Martha Combs). Nancy Ann married Joseph Gayheart. Mary died young on 08 Apr 1902 per headstone. William married (1) Unknown (2) Milly Ann Russell 6 Sep 1918 (3) Vergia Wooten 26 Mar 1925; and (4) Rosa Collins 7 Feb 1942, all in Perry Co., KY. Perry Lee married (1) Astor Stacy (2) Luke Ritchie. SE Notes: Possibly the son of Fielden Combs and Sylvania ENGLE. According to researcher Jenny Combs, they had children named Elijah, Winnie, Jerry, Angeline, and William. Supporting documentation includes a marriage certificate for Elijah that names his parents as Fielden and Sylvania Combs. One of Fielden's youngest daughter Mary Combs GILLESPIE (by a subsequent marriage) named all of her siblings, both full and half. The Perry Co. Marriage Bond for Fielden Combs and Sylvana ENGLE was dated 22 Sept 1885 ((PC-MBF). Although no divorce record for Fielden and Sylvania has been located, they apparently divorced and she remarried William THACKER around 1899. William aka Wilburn states in 1900 that he had been married 1 year. Sylva states she has been married twice and has had 7 children with 6 living (see 1900 Knott Co., Ky. census where she and William THACKER are shown son with Cullen THACKER and stepson William Combs). The whereabouts of the other children in 1900 are not known; however, Elijah, William, Winnie, and Angeline are with Sylvania in the 1910 Knott Co., Ky. census. Her first husband Fielden Combs (probable son of Jackson Combs and Mary Anne YOUNG) is found in the 1900 Mingo Co., WVA census where he is living (with a new family) next door to Elijah FULLER, the son of Archibald FULLER and Dicy COUCH. The Benjamin in the above record appears to be a brother to Sylvania, both being children of Henry ENGLE (see 1870 Perry Co, Ky. census records).

NOTES: Crittenden (possibly J Crittendon), son of Alexander Combs and Polly Combs per his 11 Aug 1915 Perry Co., KY death certificate. His marriage documented by the 24 April 1897 (PC MBC:22) Crit Combs & Martha Combs, surety Russell Cornett (PC MBC:22) Source (PCKY Marriages Books A-F, PCKY G&HS, Inc., transcriptions by Pat Horne). Although Martha states she has 1 child, none of the above children were born after their marriage. More research is needed to identify the mother of all of Crit's children. Crit's father was Alexander S (per 1850 census) Combs and not to be confused with the Alexander Combs who married Mary BRASHEARS. Alexander S disappeared after the 1850 census, or later went by another name. Crit's mother Mary Combs (per son's DC) was with him in the 1880 census and also styled as his mother). She also appears to be the same as Polly STACY in the 1860 census where she is with son J C and other children (or someone else's children) who were styled as Stacy 1860, and Combs in 1880. HOWEVER, note this record states she was widowed and only had one child and we know she had at least 2 given the 1853 (KVS record) death of son Silas. More research is needed on this family. Crit's wife Martha is listed as a Combs in her marriage record.

SE Notes: Son of Claborn Combs and Nancy Ann SIZEMORE. Their 1880 household shows a son Hiram, age 7. Harm Combs died (Cert # 21698) 29 April 1949 in Perry Col, Ky., the result of a homicide by gunshot wound to the left thigh. Parents listed as Claybourn and Nancy Ann Combs. He was buried April 30, 1949 at Christopher in Perry Co. The DC gives his year of birth as 1872 which matches better with his 1880 census record. Informant was Burton Combs, identified as decedent's son. No marriage record has been located for this Hiram and Polly.

Jimmie "Crashdone" Combs states Richard was named Richard Nicholas. Although he is not listed in the1860 Perry Co., KY Census, he is listed (b c1853) with wife Elizabeth in the 1870 Perry Co KY Census household of his parents. In 1880, he was born c1856. Polly d/o of John Lewis FELTNER and Elizabeth WATSON. Richard's mother Polly is further defined as a FELTNER by the 1932 Knott Co., KY Death certificate of Simeon Combs, born abt 1840, son of Andrew & Katie [sic] FELTNER. According to annotations in the 1880 census (by Jimmie "Crashdone" Combs & Lynda Combs Gipson), Andrew's wife was Elisabeth "Betsy" d/o Reece David YOUNG Sr. & Oriah RITCHIE (no source given).

Notes: Emaline Combs GRIGSBY, apparent d/o of Clinton "Old Grizzler" Combs and his first wife Elizabeth Combs. She is found in their 1850 and 1860 households. She first married David BAKER and they are found in the 1870 census. She is listed by herself with children Malcolm and Cora in the 1880 census. In 1886 Emaline Combs married secondly Balis W. GRIGSBY (per PCKY Marriage Index which corresponds to the 1900 census record for having been married 14 years). It was also the second marriage for Balis (s/o of Benjamin GRIGSBY and Winnie SIZEMORE) as he married first Mary "Polly" BEGLEY. Balis W. GRIGSBY is buried in the Old Grigsby Cemetery on Lotts Creek (also known as the Curt Napier Cemetery). He was born 07 Oct 1837 and died 19 Jan 1912 (Source: Cemetery markers originally recorded 1997 by Helen "Pat" Jones Horne & Jeanette Bowling Whitaker and photographed and updated by Eddie M. Grigsby in 2006.There is one Emoline Combs buried at the cemetery but the online transcription states she was born 26 Jul 1930 with no date for her death. Emaline was still alive as of the 1920 census. At this time there is no information about Emaline's first husband David S BAKER (s/o of Isaac and Elizabeth Baker per census records) but he apparently died prior to 1880. Emaline and Balis appear to have had one child, the above Carlisle.
The boarder John Combs is the right age to be Emaline's brother John Combs aka Limpy John Combs, s/o of Clinton Combs and Elizabeth Combs. John is found with his father Clint in his 1850-1880 census households. He married Polina Combs, d/o Jeremiah L. Combs and Sally KELLY, by whom he had one child, Flora Combs, who married Franklin P. Martin. John J Combs is buried in the Jim Pete Cemetery (b. Dec. 2, 1851, d. March 19, 1926) in Jeff, Perry Co., Ky.

Notes: Apparent widow of Nicholas Combs who married 4 May 1865 Marthan Combs (PCKY MBB:357). Martha Ann believed to be the d/o of Granville Combs and Marinda BRASHEARS. She appears (age 11) in Granville's 1860 household and Martha Combs' heirs were legatees of Granville's 1898 will indicating she was deceased by that date. Her deceased husband Nicholas was the s/o of John S. Combs and Cealey Combs. He and Martha are last found together in the 1880 census living next door to his father John S. Combs. Nicholas probably died not long after 1890 since their last child, John S, was born 1890.

SE Notes: Cyntha BAKER Combs, widow of Civil War Soldier Harrison Combs, s/o of Tarlton Combs and Elizabeth ISON. Cynthia BAKER, died 4 Oct 1932, Perry Co., KY(daughter of Isaac and Elize GRIFFY Baker) according to the 1 Jan 1943, Perry Co, KY death certificate of their daughter, Annie Combs Baker, b 10 Aug 1878, Perry Co., KY. Civil War pension records show that Cynthia applied for a widow's pension by right of her husband's service on Nov. 18, 1889. Above census record indicates their youngest child Harrison was born Aug. 1888. According to Combs researcher Jo Tambornino Chayer, an old newspaper clipping (no date or paper id given) from a scrapbook about the 1932 celebration of Cynthia's 83rd birthday states she was widowed in 1888 at the age of 39. The notice stated she had 12 children which matches the above census record that includes 4 additional children above the 8 shown in the 1880 census. The sons were W.H., Lee and J.B.(twins); Eli, Charlie, Mack(Malcomb) Walter and Harrison. The daughters were: Maggie, Alice, Annie and Laura. She lived to see all her children grown and outlived 5 of them. It would appear that the twins were Robert L(ee) and John B. Photos of the family of Harrison and Cynthia Baker were contributed by Jo Tambornino Chayer.

Notes: Son of Nicholas "Bird-Eye" Combs Jr. & Elizabeth Combs, married March 30 1858 PCKY Jane MESSER (PCKY MBB per Pat Horne's transcriptions for PCGHS, Inc.). Wife Jane aka Gincy apparently deceased by 1880. The surname FIELDS is hard to decipher in this entry but when compared to other Fields as written by the same census taker, it is clearly the same. The identity of these Fields is not yet determined. There is an Eliza with a daughter Lucy in the 1880 census but the ages do not match very well. What may be a clue is that the name Davis is found as a given name in the Fields family.

Note: Elhanon S Combs, son of Samuel Combs and Eliza Combs per his 3/14/1915 DC (#8150). He died at age 60. The DC of their daughter Susan SPENCER lists her parents as Elhanon Combs & Mary DAVIDSON (d/o of Joseph Davidson and his wife Alcy "Granny Dutch" Combs). Old letters (see archives) written by Malta Davidson (d/o of Ira J DAVIDSON) state that Mary Davidson married Elhanan Combs. This couple found in the 1880 Wolfe Co, Ky. census (with daughter Susan) where his parents are also living. No marriage record has been located for this couple. Elhanon and Mary named a son Ira J after Mary's brother.

He first married Harriett GODSEY, then remarried Elizabeth GUINN 4 Oct 1887 (MBF per Pat Horne's transcriptions for PCGHS, Inc.). Notes: Appears to be the John Combs who married 3 Jan. 1889 Margaret NAPIER (PCKY MBE:32 per Pat Horne's transcriptions for PCGHS, Inc.). Surety was Alex Cornett. The 1880 census shows one Margaret, age 15, in the hh of McCager and Harriet NAPIER. John and Margaret live 2 doors from McCager and Harriet Napier in 1900. Annotations from Freddie WIlson's 1900 census state Margaret was the d/o of McCager Napier & Harriet McLemore (no source given). The same also states that John Kenner Combs was the illegitimate son of Wayne WALKER and Minnie Lydia Millie Combs (no source given). John and Margaret live next door to James WALKER. There is an earlier marriage of one Kendrick Combs and Margaret NAPIER (27 Nov 1885, PCKY MBF, Surety Ira J Davidson) which is interesting in that John's next door neighbor was Nicholas, son of Kendrick Combs and Millie Combs. More research is required to properly track and document this John Combs.

Notes: Probably Thomas Benton Combs, s/o Alexander and Mary BRASHEARS Combs. If we have the correct individual, his year of birth is incorrect. He was 5 months old as Thos B in his parents' 1860 household, age 10 in 1870, age 20 as Benton in 1880, and only age 40 in 1910. Thomas Benton Combs married Susan Combs 21 March 1898 at the house of Russell Cornett, surety J E Johnson, witnesses Rebecca and Russell Cornett (PCKY MBC, Pat Horne's transcriptions for PCGHS, Inc.). Susan's father Allen Combs (Allin on the marriage record) married March 1864 Priscilla DOBSON (PCKY MBB Pat Horne's transcriptions for PCGHS, Inc.), and the couple is found in the 1870 census with a young family. The 3 Feb 1941 DC of their son Brack Combs also identifies his mother. Allen was the s/o of Andrew Combs and Polly FELTNER (see 1850 (age 9) and 1860 (age 19) census records for Andrew and Polly).

Notes: Appears to be Kindrick, s/o of Nicholas Combs Jr (III) and Sally Cornett. He is found with parents in the 1860 census but he and his siblings (styled as grandchildren) are living in 1880 in HH #611/620 with grandparents Nicholas "Bird-Eye" and Elizabeth Combs Combs. His parents, or at least his father, is believed to have died. According to The Combes Genealogy, he married a Candesta Combs and a Virginia CRAWFORD. His daughter Mary B, b. Oct 1886, was born before his marriage to Virginia, therefore, perhaps she is from an earlier marriage. Perhaps the Nancy in previous household is a daughter of Kendrick's earlier marriage. Virginia states she only has 2 children living. Perhaps this is the Kindric who married Margaret NAPIER on 27 Nov 1885 (but listed amongst 1886 marriages in MBF). SE Notes: Susan EVERSOLE was the widow of Joseph EVERSOLE, who was killed along with his "best friend" Nick Combs on 19 April 1889 during the French-Eversole Feud. Susan EVERSOLE was the d/o of Josiah H Combs and Polly Ann MATTINGLY. Nick aka Nicholas Combs (age 12 in 1880) was the son of Alcy "Granny Dutch" Combs (sister to Josiah H Combs) and her husband Granville Combs. Joseph aka Joe EVERSOLE was a merchant. He and his friend Nick Combs were buried together in the same coffin. Specifics of this killing and the familial relationships are provided in letters written my Malta DAVIDSON and transcribed by Marilyn HANSEN. Marriage record for this couple has not been located. They are previously found in the 1880, and Susan (age 14) is found with her parents and siblings in the 1870 census.

SE Notes: This Ephraim is too old to be the Ephraim, s/o of Stephen Combs and Martha "Patsy" FRANCIS (age 18 in their 1850 Breathitt Co. hh). And he is too old to be Ephraim (age 19) in the 1850 Perry Co. hh of Jeremiah "Curly" Combs and Elizabeth Combs. There is some thought these two 1850 Ephraims might be the same as there is only 1 Ephraim Combs of later census records (age 48 in 1870, apparent widower with children Wm, Jackson, and Nancy). In 1860, Ephraim is age 35 with wife Eliza Combs and son Wm. Ephraim, son of Stephen, had brothers named William and Jackson. No Ephraim of any age can be located in 1880, nor can a marriage be
located for an Ephraim
