Natalie Farrell Notes: Maura seems to be the Monroe in the Perry Co., KY 1930 Census. Matilda was my great-grandmother, daughter of Hiram Combs & Susan "Susie" Everidge. Matilda married William "Bill" Banks who resided in the 1930 Census in Marsh Fork, Raleigh, West Virginia. Junior Banks is my grandfather. He was born Isaac Johnson, Jr., went all of his childhood as Junior Banks and when he entered the navy he changed his name to William "Bill" Banks, Jr. The Grant Banks listed in the 1930 census living with Hiram & Susie Combs is the son of Bell Banks from his first wife Alice. I believe her last name was Harvey.

JIMMIE'S COMMENTS: I'm sure you have seen the name C.D. Combs as registrar on a lot of the DC's. that I have posted in the past. It must have been a hard thing for Dilce to sign his own daughters DC. C.D. Combs I'm sure you know is the s/o Robert William Combs, Sr., Both have schools in Perry Co., named after them. They are all buried in the New BlackHawk Cemetery (Bottom Half), Happy, Perry Co. Ky.

The Combs Forest (Hazard Leader)
The following relative to the Combs family is from the editorial columns of the Elizabethtown News.

The Combs have it in Perry county. We have always heard that the Spaldings in Marion County were a little avaricious for public office, but in compairson with the Combs of Perry county they are models of humility and self-effacement. Dr M E Combs is running for County Judge, and Sewell Combs for County Attorney. Bill Combs wants to be County Clerk, while Troy and Goodloe are candidates for jailor. Killus, what a name for Perry county, is out for Tax Commissioner, while there are only four of the family, Van B, Richmond, Bige and Red Bod, in the race for sheriff. Whatever else happens up at Hazard, the Combs are going to win, and after the election they can have a family reunion at the court house. Lest we overlook the Combs that are running, we are remineded that John H Combs and Ed Combs are seeking the office of magistrate of the fifth district; Lee Combs wants to be magistrate in the Campbell district; John G Combs contemplates running for the office of councilman in the city of Hazard; W M Combs (Bill Kettlehead), colored, is again asking for the office of coroner. In Letcher County, they have James Combs, who wants to be County Clerk.

The Combs family settled in Perry County about the time of the Revolution, when seven brothers came here from North Carolina. It is estimated that one-fifth of the population of Perry County has Combs blood in their veins. Thus there are the colored Combs quite a number, who are descended fro mthe slaves of the family.

But practically all of the Combes of the county, whose skin is white, are descended from these seven brothers. This included Earl Combs, the famous ball player of the New York Yankees, and the several preachers and statesmen who are well known in Kentucky. As someone remarked, the Combs family tree has developed into a regular forest! One point to be noticed is that several of the Combs are advertising that they do not belong to a family of office-seekers. It would seem that all the Combs do not claim relationship, any more than all the Smiths, Browns or Jones pretend to be related. We just wonder if a Combs would run for office as well by any other name.
