HOGG (S), Sally Ann HOGG (S), Elijah Combs (S), Martha Combs (S). (Abstracted by Sue Elfving; please see note above on Deed Book D.)

Notes: Jackson G. Combs is documented as the son of Elijah Combs, Sr. by the 1855 Perry Co, KY will of his father, and the Dickey Diary Interview of John S. Combs. The widow was Martha aka Patsy CRANK Combs. Only three children are listed in this deed. In 1850, the census lists Polly, Lesley, Elijah, Sally, James, Jackson, John, and Cassius. Sons Lesley, age 15, and Cassius, age 4, died in 1852 (KVS). One or more additional children may have died as evidenced by the Ky. Vital Statistics records for deaths of children of a Jackson G. & Polly Combs. By 1870, Martha is living with her son Jackson in Owsley Co. Martha aka Patsy, wife of Jackson G. Combs, is identified as a daughter of James Crank who d. 7/3/1862 in Knox Co., Ky. (Source: Knox Co., Ky. Kinfolk v.2#12, 12/1/1978)

Notes: The 1850 Perry Co., KY Census HH of John D. Combs (born ca 1825) & Synthy (ELLIS) Combs (died 1855) includes Lafayette Combs, born ca 1825 [sic]. The 1870 Perry KY Census includes the HH of John D. Combs, born ca 1825, with son, Lafayette, 22; John W., 20, Adaline, 18, and Caroline, 16. Could the 1850 Lafayette age have been incorrect; i.e., 2 or 5 instead of 25? Who is Nessy? C. Combs, age 50? DK Notes: I had previously transcribed this as "John?," but on closer inspection, I discovered it was initials instead.

Note: Elhannon M. Combs, son of Nicholas & Elizabeth Combs Combs (1850 Perry KY Census& 1918 Perry KY DC of Elhannon). Previously Polly was posted as a Combs but she is actually listed as a HURT, and appears to be the 10 year old Polly HURT in the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census District 2 HH 119-128 of William HURT, then age 80. Who were the above Elijah and Adla Combs? (Elijah may have been Eliza in 1870, and Adla was Adeley (Adelia?) in 1870). According to The Combes Genealogy, Elhannon married Harriet NAPIER (still undocumented)

HH 83-81
Matilda COMB 45 farmer 70 50 Ky

Notes: Is this Matilda of 1850 Perry Co., KY Census District 2, HH 008-008, then age 40, possibly daughter of George & Lydia HARRELL Combs? Not found on 1870 Perry, but see 1880 Tilda Combs, age 70.

In 1850 Perry KY Census record, Juda was not in HH; Alen was Allen; Simpson was Sampson; Betty was Elizabeth. Judah was probably Judah DOBSON according to the 1936 Breathitt Co., KY Death Certificate of Dutchman Combs, born ca 1863, son of Wayne and Judah DOBSON Combs. See also 1870 Perry KY Census. Previously posted was Nancy age 40 but that was in error, she was actually 4.

DK Note: son of Massingill Martin Combs and Elizabeth Combs (1850 Perry KY). Gilbert and his wife Louisa are also listed on the 1870 Perry Census. Both are buried near Annville, Jackson Co., Ky in the Combs/Hurley Cemetery. Question: Is Jeptha, age 2, same as Jesse, age 13 in 1870 Perry KY Census?

SE NOTE: This is the Felix that is the s/o of Benjamin. Norton and Benjamin' Stacy's Bell Co. DC states he was the s/o of Felix Stacy and Marilda Pickard meaning the Felix Sr. remarried but he must have died prior to 1870 because Marilla and the kids are in Bell Co. without Felix.

SE Notes: Elizabeth [sic] Combs, age 19, married 21 Aug 1854, Perry Co., KY, Leviticus FULLER, age 18; however, both Betsy and Sally FULLER'S birth records shows parents as Leviticus and Jane Combs Fuller, and in 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, Jane, age 12, was in household with her brothers, Nicholas and Elijah, all children of Jeremiah L. and Sally WHITELY Combs, Sr., in the HH immediately below that of Elijah FULLER with Leviticus, also age 12. According to The Combes Genealogy, Jane remarried to Wilbur Patton. See William and Jenny PATTON in the 1870 Breathitt Co., Ky. census. The young male above whose name is unreadable might be Jefferson, age 10, in 1870.

Notes: Elias Combs married Lucinda "Sinda" CORNETT (See 1850 Perry KY Census, both listed as age 22, born KY, 17 Dec 1852, Perry Co., KY Records, and 1870 Perry KY Census). Who was Sinda Combs, age 17? Could she have been Lucinda, daughter of Stephen and Martha "Patsy" FRANCIS Combs of 1850 Perry and Breathitt? According to The Combes Genealogy (which does not mention wife), Eli [sic] was the son of Tarleton & Elizabeth ISON Combs of Perry. A. C.C. was Augustus (also listed as such on the 1870 Perry KY Census)

T. _. G. 1/12 Ky male

Notes: Either Robert C. (a.k.a. Robert G.?) Combs or his wife, Eliza Combs, was the child of Jeremiah & Syntha SUMNER Combs (7 Apr 1854 Perry Co., KY Records). Eliza was neè Combs per both 1851-1859 Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics and the 1921 Menifee Co., KY Death Certificate of son, Henry Duff Combs, born 17 Apr 1842, Perry Co., KY to Robert L. [sic] and Eliza Combs Combs. The 1850 Perry Co KY Census listed Henry, 7, James, 5, and Martha 3, but no Mat (was he James? James Madison?). Perry Co., KY Vital Statistics list Lacy (male), born 13 May 1852 (appears to be same based on 1880 Perry); Nancyan [Nancy Ann?], born 12 Sep 1854; John M., born 12 Oct 1857; and Granville, born 13 Nov 1858. Robert & Eliza not found on 1870 Perry Co., KY Census. Also Note: There may have been both a Robert C. and a Robert G., both with wives named Eliza, both causing some confusion (research in progress). Robert C. may have been Robert Cornett Combs (source needed). This family is missing from the 1870 Perry Co., KY Census, but see 1880.

May McINTOSH 6 Ky

Notes: Nicholas Combs was the son of Nicholas & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, Sr., and his wife, Elizabeth Combs (married 05 Jun 1816, Floyd Co., KY) ) was the daughter of RW John Combs. In 1850 (Perry Co., KY Precinct 2, HH21) Nicholas is listed as age 58, b TN, and Elizabeth as age 55, b KY. Serena McINTOSH may have been the same as Sarena, wife of Wm. McINTOSH in the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census (Precinct 1, HH23), age 22, with children Nancy 4, Elizabeth 2, and John 3/12. -- in which case either Nancy A. may have the surname McINTOSH. Nicholas Combs is probably the Nicholas, age 7, who was also listed in the 1850 HH of Nicholas & Elizabeth Combs Combs.

Notes: Willie Combs SIZEMORE identified as Combs by the 1856 birth record of her daughter Armelda. Married Harvey SISEMORE 3 Mar 1845 (PC-MBA:54). Ancestry of Willie (possibly short for Wilmoth) unknown. Harvey purchased land (formerly lived on by Jesse STACY deceased) in 1861 from Reen Combs, the widow of Jackson D. Combs. 1850 census records show they were neighbors. Harvey and Willie's daughter Sinthia aka Cynthianne married Virgil Combs, the son of Jackson D. and Serena Combs. An 1869 Perry Co. deed from Harvey SIZEMORE to son-in-law Milton Combs who married his daughter Polly further states that Claiborne Combs married his daughter Nancy Ann. Milton and Claiborne were the sons of Biram S. and Mariah MESSER Combs.

SW: Mary, Paulina, Armelda. (Editor's note: The age of Armilda was corrected from age 5 to age 3 by Sue Elfving.)

Additional Notes: Jeremiah Lorenzo Combs was deceased by 1862 per his cemetery marker that shows he was born 1815, died 1862. Strong family tradition is that he was killed when shot from behind by Blinky Shade Combs. That he was killed is substantiated by a lawsuit between the heirs of Jeremiah L Combs and Shadrach Stacy wherein it is stated he was killed 186__. See 1867 below for more information about the suit. Notes: Washington Combs, son of Mason & Jane RICHARDSON Combs, married Sally, who was a WHITAKER per The Combes Genealogy (no source given). The male born ca 1838 was apparently their son, Jefferson, born 1835-1837, may have been Jefferson, born 1835-1838 per 1850-1880 Perry Co., KY Census records. Jefferson Combs married 30 Apr 1860, Manerva Combs (Annotated 1880 Perry Co., KY Census) who may have been the same who was daughter of Biram and Mariah MESSER Combs (age 14 in the 1850 Perry -not researched). According to The Combes Genealogy, Wash's daughter, Margaret (Peggy), had a son, Pearl, by John LACY. Could J. P., age 3, be that son? Could he actually have been G.P. and the Granville Combs, age 13, of the 1870 Perry Co., KY Census record of Wash and Sally? Peggy was not on the 1850 Perry Census unless she was Peggy listed as then age 41.

Notes: 1860 is the only census year that lists Sorena as a STACY. In all other census records (1850, 1870, and 1880) she is styled as a Combs. Sorena STACY aka Serena Combs aka Reen Combs aka Lurena Combs are the same individual. In the 1850 Perry Co., KY Census, Lurena Combs was listed as age 29, born KY, and headed the District 2, HH 012-012 household that included Robert Combs, age 10 (see Robert, age 20, in Hezekiah Combs' HH 247-245), and the above five children also listed as Combs. Lurena was then living on the same property with William D. Combs, born ca 1790, VA., who was the widowed husband of Sally COMBS, d/o of Mason Combs. According to one annotated census transcription, Lurena was neè STACY (no source given). In 1870 and 1880 she was Serena COMBS. Perry Co., Ky. deeds show that she was Reen Combs, the widow of Jackson D. COMBS who died in Sept. 1849 per the Mortality Census. All children except Shade were her children by Jackson. It is not known if she remarried to a Stacy, and it is not known if Shade was her son; however, he was still with her in 1880 and listed as a Combs. An 1870 Perry Co. deed lists the heirs of Jackson D. Combs to wit: Eliza Ann DONE [wife of Joseph Done], John D. Combs Jr., Alexander D. Combs, Robert D. Combs, Virgil D. Combs, and Mary A. D. Combs. The children, as heirs of Jackson D. Combs, sold his interest in land as the heir of Sally D. COMBS

Notes: The above Hiram COMBS and wife Mary WILLIAMS have (See 1926 Perry Co., KY Death Certificate of daughter Mary COMBS Wells) been confused in the past with Capt. Hiram Combs of Perry KY & Madison Co, Arkansas who married Mary WALKER & was the son of Elijah & Mary "Polly" Combs Combs, Jr. Researcher Tabatha L. Farler Haddix reports that the above Hiram Combs was the illegitimate son of Clinton Combs (son of Mason & Jane RICHARDSON Combs) & Matilda Combs (daughter of George & Lydia HARRELL Combs) according to oral family history related by Hiram Combs himself directly to Tabitha's grandfather, Taylor Combs, born Dec. 29, 1899 who is still living (Jan 1998) . The confusion is relative to both Hiram Combs having resided in both Perry County and Madison Co., AR, although this Hiram apparently moved back and forth. 1861-1871Scott County, Virginia digitized Chancery Court case file records on the Cornetts were so closely with the Early Perry Co families including Combs and Davidsons. (provided by Sue Elfving)

There are two important chancery cases relative to the wives and families of Samuel Cornett. I recommend that anyone who is interested in the descendants of Samuel Cornett review these case files.

Samuel Cornett was a brother to the noted RW William Cornett. He first married Mary Benham as documented by their Washington Co, Va., marriage record. Russell County court records later document a separate maintenance for her. Samuel removed to Kentucky with that horde of Russell Co folks that settled in Clay and Floyd Counties. By Davidson family tradition, Samuel married Mary Davidson, the eldest daughter of RW Daniel Davidson; however, we have been unable to document Mary Davidson.

These case files clearly document that Samuel Cornett and Mary Benham only had two children; Nancy Cornett who married Thomas C Norvell and Mary Cornett who married Joshua Gillam. Depositions document that Mary and Samuel were never legally divorced and that Samuel removed to Kentucky where he had more children by a woman (unnamed) who is repeatedly styled as a mistress and concubine. Apparently the arrangement was common knowledge amongst his Kentucky neighbors and family. William Cornett was the eldest child of the second family. He is deposed and talks about his parents. He states that Samuel's first wife Mary also lived with another man but does not provide the identity; therefore, we know she was still living when Samuel left Virginia and headed to Kentucky.

The cases show that Thomas C Norvell sued William Cornett in Perry County, Kentucky, on behalf of his wife Nancy and her sister Mary Gillam. Norvell claimed that Samuel Cornett was not in his right mind when he gave his son William a deed of gift for his Scott County land on Big Moccasin. Samuel was found to be of unsound mind in his very old age. As a result, William Cornett and Thomas C Norvell came to an agreement and William deeded the land in Scott County to Thomas C Norvell while the second family was allowed to keep the Kentucky estate of Samuel Cornett for their inheritance which was considerable. The illegitimacy of the second family was a major focal point of much of the testimony. After Thomas got the land, Mary Gillam (widow of Joshua Gillam) sued the Thomas Norvell heirs because she never got her share before Thomas Norvell died. The papers contain lots of papers from the Perry County suit as well.

Unfortunately the files do not document the name of the mother of the second family who is reputed to have been Mary Davidson, daughter of RW Daniel Davidson.

The case files also document the children and heirs of Nancy (Cornett) Norvell and there are depositions from some Benham relatives.

Below are the two relevant cases:

Index Number: 1861- 012 Locality: SCOTT CO
Plaintiff(s): MARY GILLAM WIDOW
Defendant(s): HEIR(S) OF THOMAS C NORVELL ETC

Index Number: 1871-018 Locality: SCOTT CO
Plaintiff(s): HEIR(S) OF GEORGE FRANCISCO ETC
MARY A ROGERS ETC
Defendant(s): ADMR OF GEORGE FRANCISCO ETC

SE Notes: The papers make for interesting reading. These kinds of family situations were not so unusual and often provide information and insights about the family that would otherwise have never been known.

10 Apr 1861 (Perry Co., Ky., DBD:28-29). Indenture, dated 10 Apr., 1861, between Reen Combs, widow of Jackson G. Deed acknowledged by Reen COMBS 18 April 1861 and admitted to record.(transcribed by Sue Elving, see also notation above on Deed Book D)

SE Notes: Reen Combs, the widow of Jackson, is the same as Lurena aka Serena Combs in Perry Co. census records. She was listed as a STACY in 1860 but as a Combs in 1850, 1870, and 1880. An 1870 Perry Co. deed lists the children of Jackson D. COMBS deceased and they are the same found with Serena in her census records. The source for Deed Book D is a typed transcription microfilmed by the FHC and the initial G and D are often confused and I think the transcriber mistook the D for a G. The 1870 deed record identifying the heirs of Jackson D. Combs also identify Jackson as the heir of Sally D. Combs. She married William D. Combs aka William Combs Sr. and was the daughter of Mason "8" Combs. Harvey SIZEMORE was married to a Willie Combs whose parents are yet to be determined.

Witness: James B. Fitzpatrick. Recorded 20 Sept. 187?. Acknowledged by both Hiram and Bitha on 4 Dec. 1866 by Jesse Combs.

"State of Kentucky, Perry County/ To wit: I Ira J. Davidson, County Court Clerk of the County of Perry, do certify that whilst Jesse Combs Sr., was the Clerk of the Perry County Court and William W. Combs was his Deputy, that the said Jesse Combs, Sr., made and acknowledged and signed his own proper signature the within deed for the purposes therein stated: And the said William W. Combs made with his own proper hand which appeared on the back of said deed, as follows, (to - wit:) "Acknowledged before me by Jesse Combs, William W. Combs, D.C. D.C.C. and filed this 17th day of December, 1868, W. W. Combs, D.C. P.D.D.". Said deed having been left in the County Court Clerk's Office for record. And said office becoming vacant before the same was recorded, wherefore the said deed together with this certificate is recorded by me..." Given under my hand, this 31 day of August 1875. I. J. Davidson, D.P.C.C. (Transcribed by Sue Elfving; please see note above on Deed Bk D).

Note: The above explanation by the recording clerk, I. J. Davidson, explains that the Clerk's office became vacant and that this deed [along with others] were received and acknowledged before Jesse Combs Clerk but never recorded and left in the vacant office which explains why there are numerous deeds executed in the 1850s and 1860s but not entered into the books until the mid-1870s. Also note: Bitha aka Ritty Combs was a daughter of Jeremiah C. "Chunky" Combs. Hiram Wooten Jr. and Ritty are living next door to her mother Hiram Sr. and Sally GRIGSBY Combs Wooten in the 1870 Perry Co. census.
13 Apr 1867 (PC-KY DBD:6-7). Indenture dated 13 April 1867 between Martha GRIGSBY and R. C. Combs, both of Perry County...for $10 paid in hand...sells land in Perry County lying on Trace Fork of Lots Creek, one fork of the North Fork of the Kentucky River...beginning on top of a cliff at the Slick Rock fork...130 acres more or less. Signed Martha x GRIGSBY. Witness: W. W. Combs. [No recording date but may not have been recorded until 1870. See 27 April 1870 deed which is the next sequential deed in Deed Book D]. (Transcribed by Sue Elfving; please see note above on Deed Bk D).

Note: Martha could be the widow of John GRIGSBY. See Patsy GRIGSBY in the 1850 census.
16 Oct 1867 (PC-KY DBD:62). Indenture between Lewis MOSLEY to Shadrick Combs...for $30 to be paid to William SMITH...Lewis MOSLEY conveys to Shadrick Combs land in Perry County lying on Balls Fork including all land said Lewis owns...700 acres more or less....Signed Lewis x MOSLEY. 8 Nov 1867 (PC-DBD:325). John SMITH of Perry County of the first part and William SMITH, Jeremiah SMITH, Samuel SMITH, Nancy SMITH, Jordan SMITH, Manford SMITH, Viney SMITH, Richard SMITH, Benjamin SMITH, and Milly SMITH of the second part....For "love and affection I have for my children..." land in Perry County on Lots Creek...beginning at the mouth of Big Fork of Lots Creek above Levi COMBS...Jacob GAYHEART'S line...branch between John SMITH'S and Levi Combs's...375 acres more or less....signed John x SMITH.
And I also bequeath the following personal property - 1 mare & cold, 17 cattle, 19 head of hogs, & 23 head of sheep and their increase from this time forward, and $100 note with interest and one other note with interest...8 Nov. 1867. [No recording data] (Abstracted by Sue Elfing; please see note above on Deed Bk D.)

SE Note: John deeded his land to all of his children, both adult and minors. In 1860 Perry Co. census, Nancy was Nancy A. Smith, Jordan was J. M. Smith. In 1870 there was no daughter Milly Smith in the household but there was a Grant, age 4 months. John's wife was Will(e)y Combs, daughter of Jeremiah "Long Jerry" Combs, so documented by deed records involving heirs of Jeremiah Combs. Could it be that he included his wife Willy in the list of grantees and the clerk mistranscribed the name as Milly?
8 Nov 1867 (PC-DBD:49-50). Indenture dated 8 Nov. 1867 between George W. MORGAN to Jeremiah H. Combs, both of Perry County........for $105 in hand paid...sold all of 1/7 part of a tract in Perry Co. on the waters of the North Fork of the Kentucky River being 1/7 part of a 100 acre survey, and 1/7 part of a 50 acre survey on the south side of the North Fork of the Ky. River being same land on which Jeremiah H. Combs now lives and it being same land Combs, deceased, and which land was deeded to George W. MORGAN by Samuel COMBS, and his wife, Elijah [sic - but should be Eliza] Combs, who was one of the heirs of George Combs, deceased, supposed the 2/7 of the 2 surveys to be 18 acres more or less....signed G. W. MORGAN. Acknowledged by grantor on 23 Nov. 1867. (Transcribed by Sue Elfving; please see note above on Deed Book D.)

SE Notes: Perry Co. records show that Eliza Combs MORGAN Combs was the daughter of George "8" Combs. She first married Zachariah MORGAN and then Samuel Combs. It is not known which Jeremiah Combs was the purchaser of this land that once belonged to old George Combs. The use of the initial "H" is interesting because we have not seen this initial used with any Jeremiah in other records. The grantor George W. MORGAN may have been the same as Washington MORGAN, son of Eliza Combs and her first husband Zachariah MORGAN.

SE Notes: Tarleton Combs, s/o of Mason "8" Combs and Jane RICHARDSON. His wife was Elizabeth ISON. The Harrison Combs is likely the same as their son Harrison. Katharine CORNITT would be their daughter Katherine who married John CORNETT. The deed was recorded 21 years after the fact.

The recording information stated the indenture had been filed for record in the lifetime of Jesse Combs and said acknowledged by Tarlton Combs before W W Combs the D C C this 18 April 1868 and acknowledged by Elizabeth 13 May 1868 but was never recorded because the office of the clerk was vacated by reason of the death of Jese Combs. Recorded 19 May 1883. (Source: Abs. fr orig. image, FHC Film # 0968256, by S Elfving)

Notes: Tartlton Combs, s/o of Mason "8" Combs and Jane RICHARDSON, married Elizabeth ISON.

[L] Combs & Margaret Combs his wife of Perry County of the first part and Washington Combs, Dianner McINTIRE, late Dianner Combs and wife of William McINTIRE, Martha Ann SUMNER, late Martha Ann Combs and wife of Robert SUMNER, Isabella HAMMOND, late Isabella Combs and wife of William HAMMOND, Sampson Combs, Granville Combs, Clarinda Combs, Spencer Combs, Sylvester Combs, William Combs Jr., Dulcena Combs, children & heirs at law of the part of the first part...in consideration of the natural love they have for their children Washington, Dianner, Martha Ann, Isabella, Sampson, Granville, Clerinda, Spencer, Sylvester, William, and Dulcena...tract where part of the first part now live...on the waters of Carrs Fork of the N. It is distinctly understood that the part and interest of land hereby transferred and deeded to Martha Ann SUMNER is for her own separate use and her heirs, and that her husband Robert SUMNER is not to have any interest in said land, nor is he to have any control in any whatsoever over said land...and the above named part of the second part are to divide the above said lands equally among themselves, and in such a maner that each one shall have an equal and equitable share...Signed William x Combs, Margaret x Combs.
Acknowledged on 11 June 1868 by grantors.
(Transcribed by Sue Elfving; please see note above on Deed Bk D.)

SE Notes: This William Combs with wife Margaret KELLY Combs and these children are clearly documented as William L. Combs by extensive records; therefore, the Clerk misread the initial in his transcription (see comments on Deed Book D) and carried the "G" through many other records he transcribed. William Lorenzo Combs was the son of Jeremiah L. Combs Sr. aka Long Jerry. Margaret was the d/o of Thomas KELLY. According to The Combes Genealogy, they had 9 sons and 5 daughters. In 1900 Margaret was living in the household of her son William and she stated she had 14 children with 12 living. The two deceased children would have been Meredith and Thomas (see next deed record and notes).

Harvey's wife was Willie Combs as proven by the 1856 birth record of their daughter Armelda. Clabourne Combs married Nancy Ann SIZEMORE on 21 April 1865 (PC-MBB:335)
