Barren Co., KY was established on 20 Dec 1798 from Warren & Green Counties. Descendant counties include Allen Co., KY, est. in 1815 from Barren & Warren Cos. In 1819, Hart Co. was established from Barren and Hardin, and in 1820 Monroe Co., organized primarily from Barren, but including some Cumberland County.  In 1860 Metcalfe Co.,KY was org. from Adair, Barren, Cumberland, Green and Monroe.

Some Barren Co., KY Combs have been identified as having come from Loudoun Co., VA, but numerous more have not yet been identified although there appear to be some possible Middle Tennessee connections (See Combs-Hash below). See also the William Franklin Coombs Manuscript.

Note: For all BarrenTax lists 1799-1840 extracted by Natalie McClendon from original handwritten books on microfilm fpr Reed/Read/Reid and Combs for 1799 to 1840 and Hardin/Harding for most years, but not all. NOTE: "adj." Means entries were listed adjacent to each other. Example: two entries in same year have an "a" in the adjacent column means they are listed next to each other. NM Notes: Entries with no people numbers or value doesn't mean there wasn't any. I just got tired of writing everything sometimes.

NOTE: It is has been questioned whether or not Lewis Goodman is the same as Louis Goodin, father of Benjamin Combs' wife Ann, and what relationship Lewis is to William Goodman, and whether Jane is the female age 10-15 in John Combs' household in the 1820 census. See further discussion in the email archives. Also note that further research is needed to determine if the Jane Combs here is the same as the Jane Combs who married Josiah Williams in Washington Co., IL 2 Sep 1835. and, or is the same Jane, a daughter of Nimrod Combs, married Josiah Williams

I William Logan clerk of the County Court of the County aforesaid do certify that the within and foregoing deed of trust from John L. Combs to John Read was on the 21st day of September 1835. Acknowledged before me by the said John L. Combs and John Read to be therein Act and deed for the uses and purposes therein aforesaid, whereupon the aforesaid deed of trust and this certificate were duly admitted to record in my [Office?] Test W Logan Clk State of Kentucky Barren County
Let. I Thomas J. Logan Clerk of the County Court for said County certify that the forgoing is a true copy of the deed of trust from John L. Combs to John Read now of record in my office In testimony whereof I have herewith set my hand And affixed the seal of office at Glasgow this 22nd day of July 1844 Filed for record April 21st, 1852 Tho J. Nelson [@ BCC?]

NC Note: (A laywer might know some of the words I can't decipher) There is a lot of information here, besides all the 'aforesaids' and 'heretofors'. Pheby Combs disappears between the 1850 and 1860 Pettis Co., MO census, and probably died, which might explain why this deed was filed in Pettis Co., in 1852. John Read was a neighbor of John L. Combs in Barren Co, and Combs sold Read some land that Read lived on, but I haven't seen any record of Combs buying the land in the first place. This deed suggests that he may have come by it through his wife's inheritance.
