Nelson County was established in 1784-5 from
Jefferson Co., KY. In 1792, KY was admitted to statehood, and that same year, Washington Co. was established from Nelson. In 1792/3, Green Co. was established from Lincoln , Nelson, and Hardin from Nelson. In 1796-7,Bullitt Co. was established from Jefferson and Nelson; and in 1824, Spencer Co was established from Nelson,Shelby and Bullitt. (See Also Early Combs to KY and the Combs Bibliography)
Note: Except where otherwise noted, Nelson Co., KY Marriage Bonds were provided by Combs Researchers Carolyn Wimp & Denise Mortorff, and taxlists by Carolyn Wimp.
[Numerous early Combs families (and all var.spellings) are found in Nelson Co., KY, some from Maryland
(traditionally primarily Catholics) and others from Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina (which originally included Early Tennessee). Among those early Combs were:
- The family of William and (Jane or Francis UNKNOWN) Coombs of Charles Co., MD via Virginia, d 1824, Stewart's and Coxes'
Creek, Jefferson Co., KY and later Nelson Co., KY
- Francis and Charity Wood Combs of possibly St. Mary's Co., Maryland, Virginia, and Surry Co., NC, who died 1822 in Nelson Co., KY
- Descendants of Thomas & Susannah PETTIT Combs of Hunterdon Co., NJ and Hampshire Co., VA
- Descendants of Joseph COOMBS I of Coombs Fort, Tonoloways Settlement (Frederick Co., MD and Bedford Co., PA,) whose children may include the families of:
NOTE: DNA testing confirms links to Tonolloways Fort with the lines of Andrew, John, Edward, and Samuel. Denman Coombs and John Newton Coombs of Boone Co., IN are also linked but their pathway is not yet known. DNA research yet to be completed on proported son Joseph, Jr.
- Joseph COMBS II of Tonoloways, died 1803, Fayette Co., PA, earlier of Loudoun Co, VA, son of Joseph COMBS I of Tonoloways;
- Samuel COMBS of Loudoun Co VA and Chaplin Creek, Nelson Co., KY(died 1814-816) (See W. F. COOMBS Manuscript and also, the 30 Sep 1825
court case in Hardin Co., KY of Mary Wilks vs Samuel Coombs), brother to Joseph COMBS II of Tonoloways, son of Joseph COMBS I of Tonoloways
- John & Alice JOLLY Combs of Loudoun Co, VA, Bedford Co., PA, and Nelson
- Edward & Rebecca STILLWELL Combs of Bedford, PA and Nelson (died 1801, Nelson KY)
- Hannah, wife of Wm Hynes (Source: 28 Jan 1818 Nelson Co., KY Loose Papers."Deposition of Edward COOMBES …as evidence in a Suit in Chancery now pending in the Nelson County Circuit Court Wherein John COMES complainant and Andrew HYNES Heirs and executors_____. This Deponent aged 82 years [bca 1735] and duly ___ deposaeth and sayeth That some time in the month of March 1797 he was a the House of Colonel Andrew HYNES who informed this Deponent that he had ___all his land business with his uncle John COMES…" Notes: The above deposition was by Major Edward COOMBS I of Tonoloways (husband of Rebecca STILLWELL). His reference to “uncle John COMES” appears to indicate that Andrew HYNES' mother was sister to Major Edward and his brother, John COMBS I of Tonoloways (husband of Alice JOLLY). The complainant would thus have been John COMBS II, son of John & Alice JOLLY Combs I. See also 1809 Nelson deposition whereby Major Edward refers to his brother, John COMBS.) Hannah married secondly James Barnes

April 6, 1791 Extracted by Combs Researcher Debi Houser from Kentucky Court of Appeals Deed Books Vol. IV Ky Records Series Vol. 9 by Michael L. Cook, CG and Bettie A. Cook, CG, pg. 338: Indenture. Isaac HITE and Harriet HITE, his wife, of Jefferson County, to Leven POWELL of Loudoun County, for 4,000 £, the following, to-wit,
one of 250 acres in Jefferson County on the waters of Chenowiths Run, a branch of Floyds Fork, part of 1,000 acres patented to John Peyton HARRISON and conveyed by him to HITE on April 6, 1791, bounded by John MINOR, Joseph COMBS, and John MAY as assignee of McCARTY. Also 250 acres in Jefferson County on Chenowiths Run, part of 1,000 acres patented to Joseph COMBS and by COMBS conveyed to HITE on April 6, 1791, adjoining the first tract. Also 162 acres in Nelson County, part of 1,000 acres granted to John Peyton HARRISON, conveyed by HARRISON to HITE on April 6, 1791. Also 338
acres in Nelson County on the east fork of Simpson Creek, patented to said HARRISON and by him conveyed to HITEon the same date, beginning at Clough OVERTON and Waller OVERTON'S corner, thence northeast. Also 120 acres in Nelson County, part of 1,000 acres patented to Matthew HARRISON and Cuthbert HARRISON and by them conveyed to HITE on April 6, 1791, on Simpsons Creek. Also 250 acres in Jefferson County, part of 1,000 acres patented to Nancy THOMPSON and conveyed to HITE on the same date, bounded by RICHEY. Also 250 acres in Jefferson County, part of 1,000 acres patented to Samuel THOMPSON and conveyed to HITE April 6, 1791, on the Kentucky River, adjoining the last tract, bounded by RICHEY. Also 250 acres on the waters of Cox's Creek, part of 1,000 acres patented to William MITCHELL and conveyed to HITE on the same date, beginning corner

Also 466 acres in Nelson County on waters of Simpsons Creek, part of 2,000 acres patented to Leven POWELL and conveyed by him to HITE on March 10, 1791, beginning corner to Cornelius DARKE opposite the mouth of Turkey Run, bounded by William TRUAX, William McCASHLAND, the mouth of Plumb Run, David COMBS, and
Matthew and Cuthbert HARRISON. Witnessed by J.CHAMBERS, Stephen ORMSBY, George J. JOHNSTON, J. BUSH, George WILSON and William ROBERTS. Recorded June 13, 1791.
Notes: Matthew and Cuthbert HARRISON were brothers of Sarah, wife of Levin POWELL, and Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Combs
per Cuthbert's Family Bible. See also the 19 Jul 1786 (then Jefferson CoVA) Land Grant (3:715) of Joseph COMBS for 1000 A beginning "on Simpson's Cr abt 20 poles above the mouth of Plumb Run." Joseph is thought to have been Capt. Joseph COMBS II of Loudoun; however, the above William TRUAX is thought to have been husband of Alice "Ailsy" COMBS, daughter of Edward & Rebecca STILLWELL Combs (See also Combs-Harrison Families), and David is thought to have been son of Thomas & Susannah PETTIT Combs of Hunterdon Co, NJ and Hampshire Co, VA.
Clough OVERTON and Waller OVERTON were cousins. Clough OVERTON was a brother of Thomas OVERTON; Thomas and Susan Llewellyn OVERTON were the parents of Maria K. OVERTON who married Llewellyn W. COMBS in 1830. Clough Overton was b. abt. 1760 in NC, and was killed 18 or 19 Aug. 1782 in the Battle of Blue Licks in KY. His will was filed in Lincoln Co., KY 16 Jul 1782 and proved 21 Jan 1782. By 1835 the taxes on the land held by Clough and Waller Overton was charged to Susan Overton, Maria K. (Overton) Combs's mother. COMBS, John p. 135, 3 tithables
Saml. p. 135 (blank)
Stacy p. 135 (blank) (ibid.)
Question: This was apparently John COMBS I of Tonoloways, husband of Alice JOLLY. He appears to have tithed both
Samuel and Stacy COMBS, the former his son, and the latter not identified, but possibly a son who was deceased by the time of John's death in Nelson in 1801? Note also that in this same year, on 20 Dec 1791, Nelson Co., KY, Peter DESPAIN married Nancy SKAGGS, daughter of Henry SKAGGS, whose 1809, Green
Co., KY will named daughters Nancy DESPAIN, Lucy STACY and Polly COMBS (w/o William). In 1781, DESPAINS, SKAGGS, STACYS and COMBS were all on the Montgomery Co, VA Militia List of Daniel Trigg. Peter DESPAIN and Henry SKAGGS in this same tax district in 1791? By 1810, John & Lucy
SKAGGS Stacy had left Green Co., KY and were in Hardin Co., KY (which is also where the children of Samuel COMBS, Sr. resided). In Green Co., KY are records of Jonah COMBS (Samuel's
son) and GATEWOODS which link back to Barren, Jessamine and Henry Counties, KY.
