Chapter VIII, Nicholas ("Danger Nick") Combs (pp.
47-52)
Page 47. 1. Nicholas
COMBS, Sr., h/o Nancy GRIGSBY, is now documented as "one of the eight"
sons of John
& Nancy HARDING Combs, Sr. (s/o Mason COMBS, Sr.) of the preceding
chapter. See Surry
Co, NC and George Baumbach's Tories
of Surry and Wilkes Cos, NC (William Ridge Estate File) for evidence
that Nicholas COMBS was not the only Tory COMBS of Surry Co, NC, probably
including Mason COMBS, Sr. himself. As a result, a number of members of
this family may have appeared to "slink off" when, in fact, they were probably
in hiding. Although references are made to him having been "shunned" by
his brothers and nephews, this is not born out by either records or the
numerous intermarriages between their descendants. Also note that it is
generally accepted by historians that at the beginning of the Revolutionary
War, Tories were probably a majority of the Colonial population, and that
it was not uncommon for later Revolutionary soldiers to have originally
been Tories (either politically or physically). See, for example, William
"Half-Hung" Combs of Wilkes
Co, NC.

Page 48. 2. In regard to the 1783 Shenandoah
County, Virginia enumeration that shows Nicholas with three in his
family (as versus 4), see that county for evidence that the tax collector
did not include the Head of Household in his count (It was also in 1783
that Nicholas documented to the satisfaction of the Shenandoah Court that
he was under age (thus born aft 1760). In regard to the 1785 Shenandoah
Co, VA tax list, note that also at Powell's Fort of Passage Creek were
the descendants of Robert COMBS of Monmouth Co, NJ, with Nicholas having
been listed with those Combs. The first record of Nicholas in Sullivan
Co, TN thus far is not until 1796; however, he already owned property
at that time so was undoubtedly there earlier. Nicholas is recorded in
then-Floyd
Co, KY (present-day Perry) as early as 1804.

Page 48. 3. Nicholas' visits back to Sullivan Co, TN may have also
been due to the fact that he still owned property in that county as late
as 1812), still searching for sale or distribution). The William and Mason
COMBS who were "living in the region" are believed to have been Nicholas'
uncles, William
and Seth STACY Combs, Sr. and Mason
& Dorothy COMBS, Jr. William COMBS, Sr. is recorded in both Sullivan
and Hawkins
Cos, TN, Mason only in Hawkins.

Page 49. 4. Nicholas, Sr.'s daughter, Elitia
(Alicia) COMBS, born 20 Jun 1772, d 11 Mar 1858, is erroneously referred
to in one Dickey
Diary Interview as Nancy and in another as Melissa. Her name was Elitia,
as is documented by the joint headstone for her and husband Richard SMITH
at the Old Smith Graveyard in Perry County.

Page 50. 5. As noted elsewhere, there are conflicts
within this manuscript in regard to Jeremiah
L. "Long Jerry" COMBS, Sr. which are compounded by conflicts in regard
to "Soldier John" (See RW
John "8" COMBS and John
COMBS III). As to the Jeremiah
COMBS, b 1786-7, he was the s/o Mason and Dorothy COMBS (Jr.?) of Hawkins
Co, TN. He, his brother, Simon, and others removed to Warren Co, TN, then
later, Jeremiah and family removed to Madison Co, AR. See also Early
Jeremiah Combs of the Southern Frontier.

Pages 51-2. 6.
Rachael COMBS, d/o Samuel and Nancy CORNETT Combs, m Levi PENNINGTON,
not
Abel. This appears to have been a "typo" since elsewhere in this manuscript,
her husband is correctly identified as Levi. See Jackson
Co, KY for more re this family. Also note that the Battle of Wild Cat
took place on 16-17 Oct 1862 in Clay
Co, KY.
No record has been located yet for a Nancy as wife of Jeremiah C. "Chunky"
COMBS whose two known marriages were to Synthia SUMNER (d/o Samuel
and Winnifred COMBS Sumner (Hicks)) and Sallie GRIGSBY.
