Note: Hiram and Eliza were married for 15 years at the time of this census and both had been married just once (reference: reading of the original 1900 census Brethitt Co., KY ed 12 sheet 14 B& 15A by Deb Coombs. According to the obituary of Alphia her mother was Eliza Gross, while the obituary of Dora stated her mother was Eliza Spencer Combs. Hiram also had a daughter Julia, in the 1930 census aged 13. Julia is listed in the Kentucky Birth Index Vol. No 78 of the year 1917 Certificate No. 38626 as being born 10 Aug 1917, the daughter of Lizzie Gross. This date matches that of Julia's grandaughter, Amanda Thomas Amanda Thomas also states that Hiram was married once only to Eliza Gross. SF NOTE: Christina Combs Kilburn (1843-1911), the daughter of Preston Combs and Nancy Stacy. She died at the home of her daughter Cathern Kilburn Moore in Climax, Rockcastle County, but is buried in the Coomer-Kilburn Cemetery in Althol, Lee County , Kentucky with her husband Tipton Kilburn 1847-1905 -I visited this cemetery in August. It looks like the certificate was initially filed in Rockcastle, but it has been scratched out and Breathitt County listed instead. The Jackson Times, June 4, 1915, page 1 (Extracted by Louise Gaskill from Stephen Bowling's Homepage: Wiley Combs Passes Away Youngest Son of Mrs. America Combs Victim of Tuberclosis-- Funeral Friday. Wiley Combs, youngest son of Mrs. America Combs, died at his home in Jackson Thursday morning between four and five o'clock from tuberculosis. He was about twenty-six years of age. The body will be buried today in the Combs graveyard in this town. Some years ago his sister, Miss Nettie, one of the lovliest girls, was taken, followed a few years later by her brother, Hacker, and of the widowed there now remain only the widowed mother and one sone, Willie, a passenger conductor in the L. & N. service from here to McRoberts. They are fine people and have the sympathy of the entire town and county.
