Preston & Nancy STACY Combs, paternal grandson of Mason & Jane RICHARDSON Combs and maternal grandson of Benjamin & Barbara COMBS Stacy (Combs &c. Histories, John S. COMBS; and Stacy Oral Family Tradition), married ca 1842, Mary "Polly" ROBERTS (Breathitt
and Lee Co., KY Records). Question: Was Sira COMBS possibly the S. P. COMBS who married 09 Mar 1843, Perry Co., KY (possibly a Sira Preston?)? According to "Fallen Leaves" by Shirley Evans, Mary "Polly" ROBERTS was the daughter of Moses and Polly KINGS Roberts, and the above Polly CAUDLE (Mary "Polly" CAUDILL) was her niece, the daughter of
John CAUDILL and Nancy ROBERTS (sources not known). Sira apparently also had a simultaneous, non-platonic relationship with Mary "Polly" CAUDILL, based on later records (See 1860 Breathitt KY Census). Also note that the full name of Sira's son, Tarlton, was Benjamin Tarlton COMBS accordingto the 1942 Breathitt Co., KY DC of the latter's son, Charlie (Charles).

SE Notes: Nancy Combs DAVIDSON was the daughter of Jeremiah "Chunky" Combs and his first wife Syntha SUMNER. Jeremiah named a daughter Nancy in his 1853 will, and then Nancy DAVIDSON with husband Robert DAVIDSON are identified as heirs of Jeremiah C. Combs in an 1854 Perry Co. conveyance (PC-DBC:309, 310) and an 1854 Articles of Agreement between the heirs of J. C. Combs decd (PC-DBC:344-5) wherein the heirs bind themselves in the amount of a $1000 for Dorcas DAVIDSON decd's share of J. C. Combs estate. Nancy's sister Dorcas had married Wayne DAVIDSON, son of Samuel DAVIDSON, and was deceased at the time of her father's 1853 will. Nancy's husband Robert DAVIDSON was the youngest son of documented Revolutionary Soldier Daniel DAVIDSON and wife Sarah. Some early Davidson researchers thought this Robert was a grandson and that Daniel's son Robert was much older; however, records show Robert DAVIDSON, the son, was born much later and was the youngest son.

SE Notes:
- There is some question as to whether the Polly FRANCIS in the above household of William FRANCIS might not be the Polly Combs, d/o of Henry "8" Combs and Rachel Clements, who first married Downey STACY per the Dickey Diary interview of Henry's grandson William M. Combs.According to researcher Janet V (Combs) Neace (descendant of Daniel FRANCIS, s/o of William FRANCIS and Polly), the not yet confirmed family tradition states that a "...tall stranger came thu and took Mr Stacy's wife..... supposedly he told the children, let her go...... when she has one, I hope she has 3 (speaking of children)..." Polly FRANCIS did have triplets in 1837. There is a 29 March 1840 Perry Co., Ky. marriage record for William FRANCIS. Of course, no bride's name was given as that was the practice in early Perry Co. Daniel FRANCIS (transcribed as David above) was born in 1841. There is a Dec. 10 1852 Breathitt Co. Death Record for one Polly Francis, aged 45; married, father Henry CASSEDY, place of death Mouth of Buckhorn; birthplace Perry (transcribed by Geneva McKinney). Janet V. Neace states that a look at the original record shows the father's name to have been Henry COMBS NOT CASSEDY. Polly had children named Washington, Preston, and Rachel, all names found in the Combs family. Washington and Preston were sons of Mason "8" Combs and Preston married Nancy STACY, the d/o of Benjamin STACY and Barbara Combs. William FRANCIS is next found in the 1860 Perry Co., Ky. census.
- Another mystery involves the Adam FRANCIS, age 16, found in the household. The 1850 census shows Adam to be a FRANCIS; however, no record has ever been located for an Adam FRANCIS. There is; however, one Adam STACY who appears for the first and last time in the 1856 Breathitt Co., Ky. tax list. The ancestry for Adam STACY has not yet been determined, but there is a very interesting family tradition concerning him. Adam Stacy was born 1835 in Perry Co., Ky. and died Sept. 24, 1893. He married Mary Jane Price, d/o of Susannah Ward and Thomas J. Price. According to Libby Preston, descendant of Adam, she has a copy of the marriage certification that reads: I certify that on the 20th day of October 1865 that Adam Stacy 26 years old birth place Perry Co was joined in holy matrimony to Lyncha Price 18 years old birth Johnson Co Ky. Per Libby, there is a family story that says after Adam's father died, his mother remarried a man named Combs. Adam did not get along with his stepfather. According to family members, it had to do with Adam's real father's land. It must have weighted heavily on Adam's mind because one night after Adam had been drinking, he came home and fought with his stepfather. He must have struck him and Adam thought he was dead. Per the family stories, Adam ran off to Ohio and stayed in hiding for quite a while. It appears that Adam's stepfather was merely unconscious, not dead, and he placed a hanging rope in a tree outside the house waiting for Adam's return. The fact that Adam's descendants thought his mother remarried to a Combs could easily be a mixup if she had been a Combs herself. If Adam FRANCIS and Adam STACY are the same, then his one appearance on the tax list in 1856 explains why he never appears again in Breathitt Co. or Perry Co. Libby Preston also states there was some thought Adam's father was named James and his grandfather was named Benjamin. The data about Adam STACY and the family tradition was provided to Sue Elfving by Libby Preston.
- The third mystery revolves around this Downey STACY. As a Stacy researcher, I have never come across a Downey STACY in any tax, court, land, or any other type of record. Some researchers have speculated that James STACY, b. c1795-1800, son of old Simon STACY and Elizabeth DAVISON, was the Downey STACY because he was married to a Polly. But James STACY and his wife Mary aka Polly are still shown together in the 1850 Perry Co. census. According to Barbara Stacy Mathews, Mary, wife of this James STACY, was Mary WHITELY, the d/o of William WHITLEY and France LEE. James and Mary did separate in 1850, but they lived next to each other for many years afterwards and she was supported by her husband James STACY. The tradition in the Adam STACY family thought the grandfather was named Benjamin. There was an Old Benjamin STACY whose complete list of children has not been documented. It was his daughter Nancy who married Preston Combs, s/o of Mason "8" Combs. They resided in Breathitt Co. and old Benjamin was living with them in 1850. Benjamin's son Benjamin was also in Breathitt Co. in 1850. Benjamin Stacy had several sons and there is not much in the way of documentation about them. Perhaps the Downey STACY was sort of a nickname based on where he lived. More research is needed to determine if there is a place called Downey Patch or Downey Bottom as I have been told. Research on any land owned or held by William FRANCIS could also shed some light if the story about Adam''s father's land is true. All of the above is presented to encourage further investigation and to provide a variety of clues that seem to be somewhat related. Two separate family traditions with some parallels make for interesting discussion.
- It could be interesting to note that Jesse STACY, believed to be a son of old Benjamin STACY, was married to a daughter of Mason "8" Combs, given name unknown. Jesse is identified as an heir in the probate records for Mason "8" Combs. Jesse STACY was deceased by 1850. Deeds also show that one Rebecca FRANCIS was also an heir. This Rebecca is believed to be the same as who married first John Combs (son of John "8" Combs) and then later married one James FRANCIS. See Perry Co., Ky. records for this information. At the very least, there seems to have been an early relationship between the Combs, Stacy, and Francis families.

Notes: Spelling of first name unclear. This daughter of Wm FRANCIS and likely his wife Polly would have been born after the 1850 census. Although the death occurred 2 days earlier, the entry in the death register appears immediately after the one for her probable mother Polly FRANCIS. See the next entry for Polly and the 1850 census record for more information. Both mother and daughter died of the flux.

SE Note: According to Combs researcher Janet V. Neace, the name of the father is clearly Combs on the original copy of the early Breathitt Co. Vital Statics record. If so, then this Polly may be the d/o of Henry Combs and Rachel Clements who first married a Downey? STACY and secondly married William FRANCIS (see 1850 census record above).
Dec 10 1852 (Breathitt Co., KY Vital Statistics - Deaths) Polly FRANCIS, age 45y, female, married, resided Breathitt Co, born Perry Co, parents Henry Combs, died Mouth Buckhorn, Flux (Transcribed from original BCKY VS death record image by Sue Elfving, image courtesy of Janet Neace and JB Francis)
Notes: Although the ages are a little off, Polly is likely the same as Polly FRANCIS, wife of Wm FRANCIS per their 1850 Breathitt Co, Ky. census record. The death record clearly states Polly was the daughter of Henry Combs and may be the same as Polly Combs, d/o of Henry "8" Combs, who married first Downey STACY.
