Parishes and Hundreds are divisions of English Counties (Shires). Parishes are church divisions lying physically within Hundreds, which are civil divisions. Some Parishes are themselves villages, towns or cities, but may encompass one or more populated places, or the reverse: numerous parishes may fall within one city. Parishes may also straddle City, Hundred, and County borders. In present-day England, other than baptisms, christenings and burials, most records are civil, but in olden times, just the opposite was true, and in fact, the location of a will, for example, may well depend on the parish in which the deceased resided, and the diocese that governed the particular parish.
The applicable Hundred 1 has not yet been added to all Parishes below (an ongoing project), but excepting some still “unfiled” 1332 Devonshire Lay Subsidy Rolls, the Hundred is listed for all published Combs &c. of Devonshire Parish records (and other divisions as applicable). If you wish to view the actual location of a parish in Devon, we recommend the Devon Parish Finder. If you cannot locate a place name, try Gen-UKI'S Devonshire Gazeteer.
* indicates Parish was listed on the 1332 Devonshire Lay Subsidy Roll.
